In the Twilight Manor, in the God's Chamber on the top floor of the Central Tower, a sacred ceremony came to a simple close, laying Leo's brand-new Status out before his goddess.
"Prayer of the Twelve Zodiac..."
Looking at this newly discovered magic, Loki opened wide the divine eyes she usually kept squinted shut, which made her look rather comical.
"So it really showed up. The last magic."
The man in question had said when he came in that he'd read a Grimoire and would probably manage to unearth his final magic, but seeing it for real, Loki still couldn't stay composed.
Mainly because one look at this magic told you it was broken.
"Multiple chant effects? That means it's got several ways to chant it and several magic effects, right?"
"Twelve attributes, twelve zodiac houses. Good grief, does that mean one magic with twelve different effects?"
"Is Riveria's High Elf lineage a fake or something? This spell is ridiculous enough to go toe to toe with Lefiya's Elf Ring!"
Loki couldn't tell whether what she felt right then was excitement or exhilaration.
Never mind her. Even Leo, seeing the effects of his new magic, felt his heart surging.
So I really do have the ability to use more than three magics now, just like Riveria and Lefiya...
Prayer of the Twelve Zodiac. He hadn't tested it himself yet, but the effects alone made it clear this magic was no ordinary thing.
Multiple attributes, multiple effects. Just as Loki said, it amounted to using one magic as twelve, which outdid Riveria, who used three magics as nine.
Even if it wasn't as absurd as Lefiya's Elf Ring, which was limited by race but unlimited in number, it was still far more absurd than what an ordinary Mage had.
Besides, Lefiya's Elf Ring wasn't without drawbacks.
That magic let her use any Elf's magic, but first she had to have perfect command of the target spell's chant and effects, and second, it not only increased Mind consumption but also lengthened the chant required.
When using it, Lefiya had to chant Elf Ring's own incantation and spend the Mind that spell cost, then chant the spell she wanted to use and spend the Mind that one required as well. It amounted to using two magics at once, consuming the Mind of two magics and requiring the combined chant length of both.
For that reason, unless she was truly cornered, Lefiya generally didn't use it, relying instead on Arcs Ray and Fusillade Fallarica to settle enemies with their power.
Only when those two magics were of no use, or when she felt they wouldn't solve the problem on their own, would Lefiya use her third magic, Elf Ring, summoning a spell capable of handling the situation at hand.
By comparison, Riveria's magic count wasn't as high as Lefiya's, but first, the Chant Link trait let her freely alter the amount of chant, and second, her nine magics already covered attack, defense, and healing, three uses in total, which was enough for any situation.
Leo's Prayer of the Twelve Zodiac was much like Riveria's three magics: a spell whose chant length he could vary himself to produce different effects, and perhaps more practical than either Lefiya's or Riveria's magic.
To have learned magic like this, all you could say was that Leo had made out very well this time.
I wonder if Stranger from Another Star kicked in again...
Leo figured that unreadable special skill had lowered the difficulty of learning magic, which was how he'd gotten exactly what he wished for and ended up with more than three usable magics, just like Lefiya and Riveria.
Otherwise, he didn't believe for a second that magic this absurd could be learned just from a bit of casual guidance under a Grimoire's effect.
If magic like that were so easy to learn, then Lefiya and Riveria wouldn't be the only two in all of Orario able to use more than three.
However high his own talent for magic might be, it couldn't well exceed that of the Elves, a race born to magic, let alone Lefiya and Riveria, who ranked among the very best even within the Elf race.
So Leo was convinced that the reason he'd been able to learn this magic had to be Stranger from Another Star kicking in.
But whatever the reason, a good result was enough.
With this magic, my last weak point is covered.
Riveria had said more than once that compared to her and Lefiya, the only thing Leo lacked was the number of magics.
Now that sole shortcoming, the one place he'd lagged behind Lefiya and Riveria, was completely made up for.
"Kid, you're really about to take off."
Once Loki had gotten her emotions in order, she clapped Leo on the shoulder with a sigh.
"Haven't I already taken off?"
Since he was in a good mood, Leo said it half teasing.
Loki blinked, then thought about it. He had a point.
The moment he hit Lv.5 and became a first-class adventurer, Leo had well and truly taken off.
As he was now, every one of his abilities far exceeded an ordinary Lv.5, and he'd hold a place among the Lv.6s as well. His overall strength could absolutely stand against the seven Lv.6s in the whole city.
Which meant that in Orario as it stood, apart from King, the Lv.7, Leo counted as standing in the true top rank, with the right to say he wouldn't lose to anyone.
Even looking across the entire lower world, probably no more than three people would dare say they could beat him reliably.
Within Loki Familia, Leo was now genuinely one of the strongest, on the same tier as Finn, Riveria, Gareth, and Ais.
As for Tiona, Tione, and Bete... honestly, however much Loki wanted to put in a good word for those three, she didn't think they could still stand above Leo.
Just as Tiona had said earlier, Leo was already stronger than them now.
Realizing that had gotten that little angel worked up too, and she'd resolved to level up on the next expedition without fail.
If they didn't level up soon, Leo really was going to leave them far behind.
Born Amazonesses and fighters to the core, there was no way those two would take that lying down.
Bete went without saying. That Werewolf had called Leo small fry at every opportunity, and now the small fry he'd mocked had caught up to him, even passed him. There was no describing how badly that sat with him.
So the three of them had been quietly waiting for the next expedition, privately gritting their teeth, determined that this time they would not come back empty-handed like last time.
To all of which, all Loki could say was...
"I feel a bit bad for Tiona and the rest, but the stronger you get, the further you go, the happier I am." Loki said it with a wide grin. "Best if you go and surpass that King over at the lust-struck goddess's place. Then I'd be laughing in my sleep."
"King... huh?"
Leo thought of that person too, someone he had yet to lay eyes on but whose name he heard wherever he went.
The city's only Lv.7, Orario's strongest adventurer, quite possibly the strongest being in the entire lower world at present. Leo had never thought about competing with him over anything, but if he could surpass him, he'd have made his name and would never have to lament his own weakness again.
Unfortunately, the gap between them was still enormous.
According to the original work, this King was a being infinitely close to Lv.8, and when pushed to his limit could even display strength on par with Lv.8. Even with strength comparable to a Lv.6, Leo would be no match for him.
The man could overwhelm the entirety of Freya Familia by himself.
Freya Familia had three Lv.6s and four Lv.5s, and yet those seven joining hands had never once beaten Ottar. Even granting that the seven of them scorned cooperation and coordination, each simply fighting their own fight, never sparing a thought for whether their teammates lived or died, and sometimes even dragging each other down, that alone said plenty about Ottar's strength.
The way Leo saw it, to bring that man down he'd need Lv.6 at minimum, and would probably need Lv.7 to have any real chance.
For now, that was something to think about and nothing more.
Of course, he was still well short of King, but against anyone else Leo felt he lacked nothing.
Even against Ais. So long as this Doll Princess didn't bring out Avenger, Leo didn't think he'd lose as he was now.
While he was thinking that, Loki spoke up.
"Speaking of, this term's Denatus is coming up. Isn't it about time you had an alias of your own, kid?"
Leo blinked.
"An alias?"
Now that she mentioned it, he still didn't have one.
"Every other adventurer gets an alias the moment they hit Lv.2 and become an upper-class adventurer. Then there's you, kid, Lv.5 already and still without one."
Bringing it up left Loki a little numb.
"That's hardly my fault, is it?" Leo shrugged. "It's not my doing that the Denatus took so long to convene."
"Long?" Loki rolled her eyes and said it sourly. "The Denatus happens once every three months. Normally that isn't remotely enough time for anyone to level up back to back, so any Lv.2 is guaranteed to have an alias."
"And then this time we get a monster like you."
Before Leo appeared, Ais held the record for fastest leveling. It had taken her a year to reach Lv.2, and even longer to reach Lv.3.
With the Denatus held every three months, not even Ais could have gone through Lv.2 without receiving an alias.
Only Leo, ranking up one after another over three months, going from Lv.1 all the way to Lv.5 and becoming a first-class adventurer with still no alias. It was absolutely a first in a thousand years.
"If the Denatus came any later, you'd probably be Lv.6 by then, kid." Loki didn't know whether to be happy or what, and said it caught between laughing and crying. "Good thing it's finally coming. You and Ais-tan both get a seat at the table this time. Ais-tan aside, you're definitely getting a new alias."
An adventurer's alias wasn't fixed either. Every level up earned another round of naming rights at the Denatus, and it might get changed.
Bete, for instance. His original alias was Fenris, and only later was it changed to Vanargand.
Ais had leveled up this time too, so her alias might be changed as well.
Except her alias suited her very well as it was, so it probably wouldn't be, unless someone wanted to mess with her.
The Denatus was essentially a naming meeting held by a crowd of gods, and those gods, who never thought a spectacle could go too far, hardly lacked for mischief. For a laugh or just to stir up trouble, they wouldn't mind at all saddling the Familia members of some god they wanted to tease or target with an embarrassing alias.
That sort of thing, however, could never happen to Loki Familia.
Nobody played jokes on the city's strongest Familia. Anyone who tried something, and Loki would charge over and plant an uppercut on them.
"Got any ideas? I'll do some maneuvering for you at the meeting!"
Loki could hardly wait to strut around in front of the gods.
"Do as you like, just keep it from sounding too awful or too edgy."
Leo shook his head. He didn't have any strong feelings about it.
More than that...
"Loki, there's someone you'd better watch out for."
Leo looked at his goddess and said it.
"Who?"
Loki asked, blank.
Leo named a god without hesitation.
"Dionysus."
