Josh, our class' jock captain glared at me as I stood my ground, before sneering and ultimately backing off.
My posture sags slightly as tension leaves me from the confrontation but unfortunately there's no time to savour it.
"We need someone to open the door just a bit! Me and Ben will confront the goblin" My gaze scans the room searching for any volunteers.
Just then, two of the athletes, after looking to Josh for confirmation, stood up and stood guard at the door I had barricaded earlier. Michael's small voice then echoes in the room.
"W-we should c-create a b-barrier for the f-fighting zone... j-j-just in c-case.."
I sprint into action immediately, trying to arrange the desks into a barrier to demarcate a clear fighting boundary. "Good thinking, Michael."
At this time a few others mustered some courage and got up to help me arrange the desks in a line.
'This way the goblin can't run amok in the crowd'.
I vaulted over the desks to the other side. Ben followed suit. His staff ready in hand. I glanced around to see if anyone was willing to join in the actual fight but wherever my gaze fell, others averted theirs, shrinking back into their corners.
Josh's two followers held the door and the desk barricading it tight, ready to open a small gap at a moment's notice.
My hands clenched tighter around my rod, as I tried to steady my nerves. Finally, I give an affirmative nod to Ben.
"I'm ready."
"Alright. Charley! Thomas! Open the doors!! Remember, one goblin. Not single more or we're screwed!!!"
Charley and Thomas, tense with renewed vigilance slowly and steadily created a small gap. Seeing the door open, the banging and scratching on it grew more deafening as they struggled enter. Then, a bloody hand grasping a dagger emerged from the opening. As soon as the figure slipped through, the jocks immediately slammed the door shut but a few hands were blocking the way.
Charles, seeing this, gritted his teeth and slammed it with everything he had. Sickening crunches followed by shrill cries of agony resounded as the arms hang limply inside, but I didn't have time to focus on that.
As soon as the bloodied figure stumbled in, I was already on the move yelling as loud as I could to bolster myself as I swung wildly.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!"
My stick hit it squarely in the head. A miracle cause I was never aiming there in the first place.
EEEIIKKKK!!!!
It shrieked and clutched its head in pain as it retreated, staggering back. I attempted to land a follow-up hit, my confidence boosted from the first. Much to my dismay, my aim failed me as my swing swept through the air, hitting nothing cause I misjudged the distance.
'Shit'
Left wide open from my wild strike, the goblin, hurt and enraged lunged at me with its dagger. But before it could reach me, it was whacked away by Ben swinging his staff like a baseball bat, making it let out another screech as it curled up holding its stomach.
Without giving it a chance to recover I dashed for it, delivering a strong kick to its wielding hand which sent the dagger flying, before proceeding to hit it wildly with Ben again and again and again.
I was panting, gasping with laboured effort but I still kept swinging, hitting it with every ounce of strength I had. It stayed curled up, looking bloody and bruised, crying as it tried to mitigate the damage but I didn't let up. Neither did Ben. I had watched too many horror movies to let my guard down.
I kept bludgeoning it until I heard a strange 'ding' ring in my ears.
