Chapter 82 - Chapter 82 : “The Calm Before Measurement”

The leak of intel from the Uchiha had ruined the entire mission to assassinate the Second Hokage.

The Uchiha Clan Head himself now imprisoned those involved —

confined until the clan could present an answer to the village.

"To give the village an answer… I have to do this."

The Patriarch murmured under his breath.

In front of him, Setsuna sat bound to a wooden post.

His mouth was gagged, his body tied tightly with rope.

Veins stood out along his temples.

His bloodshot eyes burned as they stared at the Patriarch —

not with fear, but with fury.

The Patriarch held his gaze for a long moment before speaking.

"Setsuna… I will answer for the mismanagement of intel. I will speak to the village leadership myself and put pressure on them."

His voice was steady, but heavy.

He looked past him —

at the other Uchiha confined in separate cells.

Some avoided his eyes.

Some did not.

A faint sigh escaped him.

If the village refuses to give us an answer today…

Then we may have no choice but to walk Setsuna's path.

The thought settled firmly in his mind.

When he stepped outside, several clan members were already waiting.

"Patriarch," Kohaku spoke first.

He had not joined Setsuna's actions —

But that did not mean he disagreed with him.

"Elder Kazuto was not entirely wrong. The village forced his hand. If no one takes responsibility, then tell me…

What reason do we have left to remain in Konoha?"

His tone was calm, but his eyes were clear and unwavering.

Around him, others murmured in agreement.

"Yes, we need a clear explanation."

"It cannot continue like this."

"Clan Head, we deserve an answer."

The pressure placed on the Uchiha by the Second Hokage felt less like governance and more like judgment.

Most of the clan did not fully understand why Madara had once turned against the First Hokage.

But whatever had happened between them had been their conflict.

Even the First Hokage had not held the entire Uchiha clan accountable for Madara's betrayal.

But now… the measures imposed by the Second Hokage felt different.

Personal.

Clan Head Iguchi listened quietly.

The weight of the situation pressed down on him.

"Kohaku," he finally said, meeting his gaze.

"Kagami is with the Second Hokage right now. We are discussing what happened."

He paused.

"What Elder Setsuna did was forced by circumstance. No major harm was done. I will take responsibility for this matter and seek a resolution directly."

He looked at the gathered Uchiha.

"Have patience. I will bring back an answer."

The murmurs slowly faded.

One by one, they dispersed.

Iguchi remained standing there, watching them leave.

The courtyard felt larger than before.

For a brief moment, doubt crossed his face — quickly hidden.

Not far away, a lone figure had listened to everything in silence.

Kazuto.

Guilt shadowed his expression as he turned to leave.

"Kazuto."

Kohaku's voice stopped him mid-step.

Kazuto froze when he heard his name.

He did not turn around.

His back remained stiff, fists clenched at his sides.

For a moment, he stood there.

Kohaku approached slowly.

He already knew.

"…Kazuto."

He called again.

This time, Kazuto's shoulders trembled slightly.

A tear slipped down from his lowered eyes.

"Kohaku… I betrayed the clan."

His voice came out strained.

"If I hadn't revealed the intel, Elder Setsuna wouldn't have failed."

He still didn't lift his head.

Kohaku watched him quietly.

Then, unexpectedly, a faint smile touched his lips —

not mocking, not amused.

Just tired.

"And I refused to follow the Elder," he said calmly.

"Doesn't that make me a traitor too?"

Kazuto said nothing.

Kohaku stepped closer and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"What the Elder did… was right."

He paused as Kazuto's fist clenched slightly, thinking he would also blame him.

"And what you did… was also right."

Kazuto finally looked up, confusion and pain mixing in his eyes.

How could that be? The thought crossed his mind. How can what I did be right?

Tears still clung to his lashes.

"How can I be right?" he asked hoarsely.

"Because of me, many of our people are imprisoned. If something had gone wrong… many Uchiha might have died. I shouldn't have told Kagami."

The tension in the village had been

worsening day by day —

not just for the Uchiha, but for Konoha itself.

Kazuto and Kagami had both wished for coexistence.

For peace.

But the quiet rivalry between Senju and Uchiha had never truly faded.

Suspicion lingered in every meeting.

Pride in every silence.

When Setsuna formed the plan to assassinate the Hokage, Kazuto panicked.

After his father, Kagami, was next in line to lead their branch.

Kazuto believed he deserved to know.

When Kagami heard this, he didn't hesitate.

He went to the Clan Head and informed him.

Together, they passed the intel to the Second Hokage —

hoping to prevent bloodshed before it spiralled into something irreversible.

"We can't fight the entire village, Kazuto," Kohaku said gently.

"If we go to war now, it won't be like the Warring States era. Those days are gone."

He held Kazuto's gaze.

"We cannot let our people die recklessly. But we also cannot ignore the injustice done by the Second Hokage. That's why both choices… carried weight."

Kazuto's breathing slowly steadied as he listened.

"At the very least," Kohaku continued, "the entire clan is now demanding answers. And because of this incident, the Second Hokage will also have to explain his actions. He no longer has the luxury of silence."

Kazuto looked at him, surprised.

"You don't have to carry all of this alone,"

Kohaku said.

"Even if the assassination had begun… do you really think the Hokage would have fallen so easily?"

Kazuto had no answer.

"The Elder's squad might have been slaughtered."

He exhaled quietly.

"And if that happened… the Uchiha could have become enemies of the entire village."

His eyes were steady.

"You may have stopped a greater mistake."

Kazuto listened in silence.

The tightness in his chest eased slightly — but the guilt did not disappear.

He and Kohaku walked away without another word.

Not far from them, Clan Head Iguchi

remained where he stood.

He had heard enough.

Kohaku was not wrong.

Iguchi exhaled slowly.

"This is no longer the Warring States era," he murmured to himself.

"The world has changed."

After a moment, he turned and left the courtyard.

At the same time, inside the Hokage's office—

Tobirama Senju sat behind his desk.

Across from him, Uzumaki Mito watched in silence.

Her red hair framed a face that revealed nothing —

Yet her steady gaze was enough.

Tobirama understood she was here to answer.

"Sis—"

"Hokage-sama."

She cut him off calmly.

"What happened today was an insult to my husband's dream… and to your brother's."

Her tone was clear and Controlled.

Tobirama's jaw tightened at the sound.

"The Uchiha acted without restraint," he said evenly.

"If I overlook such actions, what message does that send to the village?"

Mito did not look away.

"Are you certain it was only the Uchiha who made a mistake?"

The question lingered between them.

For a moment, Tobirama said nothing.

"Tobirama."

She spoke his name this time — not his title.

"When Hashirama was Hokage, even after being attacked by Madara, he did not condemn the entire Uchiha clan. Why must you continue to make it harder for them to stand within this village?"

Tobirama met her gaze.

"As Hokage, I am not making it harder for anyone," he replied.

"I am ensuring stability. The village is still young. Its systems are still forming. Carelessness now could fracture everything."

Mito listened without interrupting.

"What happened to their people was not deliberate," he added more quietly.

"The structure is imperfect, and some mistake happened. That is not vengeance."

She rose from her seat.

"Do not let Hashirama's life's work be reshaped by fear and destroyed," she said.

Then she looked at him more closely.

"I heard two children were among those detained."

Tobirama's expression did not change — but he did not answer.

"Tell me, Tobirama… does that honour the Will of Fire?"

She turned toward the door, then paused.

"When you make these choices," she said softly, "ask yourself whether they would let you stand proudly before Hashirama."

Then she left.

The door closed.

Silence settled in the room.

Tobirama remained seated, staring at the empty doorway.

A long breath left him.

For several seconds, he did nothing.

Then—

Bang.

His fist struck the table.

"Why can neither of you see what I am trying to prevent…" he muttered.

His hand trembled slightly before he withdrew it.

He turned toward the window.

Outside, the village moved as it always did.

Merchants.

Shinobi.

Children running through the streets.

"This village will not survive on ideals alone," he said quietly.

After a moment, he exhaled.

"I may not be entirely right… But I am not entirely wrong either."

A knock came at the door.

Tuck. Tuck.

Tobirama straightened.

"Hokage-sama. Urgent report."

"Come in," he replied.

The masked jonin stepped inside and bowed.

He handed a scroll to Tobirama.

Tobirama broke the seal and began reading.

Along Konoha's borders, shinobi from other villages had been sighted.

Not from one direction.

From several.

Different villages.

Different insignia.

They had not crossed into Fire Country territory —

But they were close.

As Tobirama read, his expression darkened slightly.

Concern did not show openly, but it settled behind his eyes.

When he finished, he rolled the scroll closed and looked at the jonin.

"Call the elders."

The jonin bowed.

For a moment, Tobirama remained silent.

The council.

The Senju clan head, Uzumaki Mito.

Once, there had been another seat among them.

Madara had occupied it.

That place had remained empty since his defection.

His fingers tapped lightly against the desk.

"Also call the Uchiha Clan Head."

The jonin hesitated for the briefest second, then bowed and left.

Silence returned to the office.

Tobirama looked down at the scroll in his hand.

"So… what are they testing?"

Years ago, when Hashirama distributed the tailed beasts among the great villages, Tobirama had opposed the decision.

His brother had called it balance.

Mutual protection.

But Tobirama had seen the risk in it.

Now those same villages were gathering near Konoha's borders.

Watching.

Measuring.

He exhaled slowly.

"At least none of them possess a jinchūriki yet."

Those tailed beasts were weapons — unstable, difficult to control.

But that would not remain true forever.

When he thought of jinchūriki, his mind briefly turned to the Uzumaki clan.

Their sealing techniques.

Their potential.

"Just because they do not have one now," he murmured, "does not mean they never will."

His gaze shifted toward the carved spiral of Konoha's emblem —

The whirlpool symbol marks their alliance.

Internal unrest.

External observers.

The timing was too precise to ignore.

"I should speak with Mito," he said quietly.

He folded the scroll carefully and waited.

"The danger I feared is beginning to take shape… and still no one sees it, but blame me for thinking too much."

Tobirama stood by the window, watching the village below.

Children ran through the streets.

Shinobi moved along the rooftops.

Everything appeared ordinary.

He exhaled once —

slow, controlled.

The calm would not last.

Inside the Uchiha compound—

Clan Head Uchiha Iguchi sat within his residence.

Outside, in the courtyard, his son Fugaku practised with his instructor.

Steel clashed lightly.

Focused. Disciplined.

Young.

A faint smile touched Iguchi's lips.

"Clan Head."

He turned.

Kagami stood at the entrance.

"What did the Second Hokage say?" Iguchi asked.

Kagami stepped forward, his expression

composed — but not at ease.

"He acknowledged that the incident stemmed from flaws within the village system," Kagami replied.

"But what Elder Setsuna attempted… cannot be ignored."

Iguchi said nothing.

"He will be punished," Kagami continued quietly.

"Publicly. To make it clear that such actions will not be tolerated again."

Iguchi had expected as much.

"And the matter of the leaked intel and consistent mission failures?" he asked after a pause.

"He did not overlook it again, right?"

Kagami did not answer immediately.

His gaze shifted briefly toward the courtyard — toward young Fugaku.

Then back to Iguchi.

There was hesitation there.
