Chapter 20 - Chapter 8- Heaven's Gates

Third-Person POV

The golden gates of Heaven gleamed beneath an endless pearl-white sky, their towering arches catching the light until they seemed carved from sunlight itself. Saint Peter stood at his usual station with the celestial registry open before him, humming quietly as another newly arrived Winner disappeared happily through the gates. His finger moved toward the next glowing name, ready to continue the peaceful rhythm that defined most of his eternity. Then the distant thunder of wings made several pages beneath his hands flutter violently.

Peter snapped his head upward just as something white and gold tore through the clouds at frightening speed. Saint Lora shot past the gates without even slowing, her white curls streaming behind her while her enormous diamond-patterned wings sent a gust tearing across the plaza. Her purple eyes were narrowed, her jaw was clenched, and the brilliant halo behind her head seemed almost painfully bright. Peter stared after her and whispered, "Oh, somebody fucked up."

A recently arrived Winner looked between Peter and the rapidly disappearing saint with growing concern. "Who was that?" they asked as another distant beat of wings rolled over the city. Peter slowly turned back toward them and answered, "Saint Lora." The Winner blinked before cautiously asking, "Is she always like that?"

Peter stared at them for several seconds before slowly shaking his head. "I once watched someone scream blasphemies directly into her face for twenty minutes and she offered them tea afterward." Several nearby angels turned toward him after hearing that, their curiosity immediately becoming alarm. "So no, she is very much not normally like that."

Across Heaven, conversations faltered as Lora passed overhead and entire streets briefly became galleries of upturned faces. Winners stopped beneath ivory archways, Heavenborn officials paused halfway through conversations, and lesser angels instinctively moved aside despite being nowhere near her flight path. Lora almost never flew this aggressively unless there was an emergency, and she certainly never looked ready to strangle somebody with her bare hands. By the time she reached the upper administrative district, rumors were already spreading behind her.

The Seraphim administrative complex rose ahead like a cathedral carved from cloudstone, living light, and polished gold. Lora angled sharply toward it, folding her wings enough to gain speed before opening them at the last moment and sending a tremendous gust through the entrance hall. Two attendants stationed near the upper offices barely managed to keep their robes from whipping around their faces as she landed with perfect grace. Neither immediately attempted to stop her.

Lora straightened her robes, fixed one displaced curl, and began walking toward the towering doors leading deeper into the complex. One attendant finally gathered enough courage to step forward and say, "Saint Lora, Head Seraphim Sera is currently in a private meeting." Lora did not break stride as she answered, "Good." The attendant hesitated before asking, "Should I announce you?"

Lora continued walking toward the doors without even glancing back. "She'll know I'm here soon enough." Both attendants exchanged a look before wisely stepping aside. Neither knew exactly what had happened, but both knew Saint Lora served directly beneath Archangel Gabriel and did not answer to Sera's office simply because Sera possessed the higher angelic rank.

Months earlier, Lora had accepted what she believed was a legitimate temporary reassignment despite being furious about losing her diplomatic post. The order carried Sera's authority, and Lora had assumed the proper approvals had been handled above her rather than immediately creating a political war over an assignment she disliked. That changed when reports from Hell began crossing her desk and several details surrounding her reassignment stopped making sense. This morning Gabriel himself had finally confirmed that he had never approved her removal at all.

Lora's anger had only worsened after Azrael confirmed there was no wider celestial order authorizing it either. Angelic rank placed Sera above a saint, but governmental authority did not place every heavenly office beneath the Head Seraphim. Lora was Gabriel's direct subordinate and Heaven's established ambassador to Hell, which made her position diplomatically parallel to Sera's rather than something Sera could casually seize. By the time she reached the final doors, anger had settled into something much colder than the fury that carried her across Heaven.

Saint Lora POV

I slam both hands against Sera's office doors hard enough that they fly inward and strike the walls with a crack that makes everyone inside turn toward me. Sera sits behind her desk looking genuinely startled, Adam is sprawled across one of her chairs like the furniture personally belongs to him, and Lute stands beside him with that permanent glare she seems to have been created wearing. The instant Sera recognizes me, surprise becomes apprehension because she has known me long enough to understand how difficult it is to make me truly furious. "Lora?"

Adam scowls while Lute's hand twitches toward her weapon, and I give both of them a look that hopefully communicates exactly how little patience I have for either one today. I walk straight past them and slam the report in my hands onto Sera's desk hard enough to knock several of her papers sideways. Sera stares down at it before looking back at me. "You lied to me."

Sera goes completely still while I plant both hands against the edge of her desk. "Lora, I can explain." I stare at her until the anger burning beneath my skin somehow manages to become hotter. "Oh, I would fucking love to hear it."

Adam's eyebrows shoot upward because I almost never swear in front of him, but for once he seems intelligent enough not to comment. "I spoke with Gabriel this morning, and according to the Archangel I actually answer to, I was never reassigned from my position as Heaven's ambassador to Hell." Sera's face tightens immediately as I lean slightly closer. "No request reached his office, no transfer was approved, and you were never given permission to remove his direct subordinate from that position."

I straighten before she can interrupt and fold my wings behind me with considerably more care than my temper deserves. "I spoke with Azrael afterward, and he confirmed there was no broader celestial order that somehow bypassed Gabriel either." Adam looks between us as though only now realizing this is not an argument Sera can end by invoking her rank. "You had no right to do what you did."

Adam gives an obnoxious little laugh from behind me. "Jesus Christ, you're throwing this much of a tantrum because you missed one meeting?" I slowly turn around and stare at him until his grin shifts slightly. "You really should not be speaking right now."

He spreads his hands and leans back like this is all amusing him. "Oh, come on, I handled that meeting just fine." For several seconds I genuinely cannot tell whether he believes that or if his ego has finally eaten whatever remained of his common sense. "You walked into a diplomatic meeting and somehow left with the Extermination cut in half."

His smile drops immediately while Lute steps forward. "Adam was forced into that agreement because the demons manipulated the treaty." I look at her before glancing at the weapon hanging from her side. "Yes, Lute, that is called negotiation."

Her visible eye narrows while one hand settles against her hip. "Watch your tone." That nearly makes me laugh, except I am far too angry to find her funny today. "Lute, I was representing Heaven before Hell centuries before you were even created."

Her entire body goes rigid while Adam bites back something that looks suspiciously like a laugh. "The Extermination has existed for seven years, which means you and every other Exorcist created for it have existed for roughly the same amount of time." I take one step toward her while her jaw clenches. "Do not stand there at eight years old and lecture me about a realm I was negotiating with before your soul existed."

Adam snorts loudly enough that Lute immediately whips around toward him. "What the fuck are you laughing at?" He raises both hands defensively while grinning. "Nothing, Danger Tits, absolutely nothing."

Sera finally rises from behind her desk and lets Seraphic authority sharpen her voice. "Enough." I turn toward her so quickly that her wings twitch. "No, Sera, we are considerably beyond enough."

I open the report and shove several pages across her desk. "These came across my desk after your little reassignment, property damage, treaty violations, Exorcists leaving agreed areas, and Hellborn getting caught where they never should have been targets in the first place." Sera's eyes begin moving across the pages while her expression slowly changes. "Did you even know half of this was happening?"

Her silence answers me before Adam suddenly pushes himself out of his chair. "My girls know what they're fucking doing." I grab one page from the report and hold it toward him. "Your girls attacked property owned by the Morningstars during an Extermination whose treaty specifically forbids attacks against royal holdings."

Adam opens his mouth, and I already know exactly what idiotic defense is coming. "Do not say collateral damage." His mouth closes again, which might genuinely be the smartest decision he has made all day. "Evelyn used those exact violations to drag your ass across that negotiating table, and somehow you still think you handled the meeting well."

Adam's face darkens while his wings shift sharply behind him. "That bitch fucking cheated." My halo flashes bright enough that he actually squints. "Call her that again."

The room becomes so quiet that I can hear the papers settling across Sera's desk. Adam stares at me for several seconds before a slow grin begins crawling back onto his face. "Oh, that's interesting." I already hate whatever conclusion he has reached.

"You're really fucking protective of Princess Tall-and-Pissed." My wings spread before I consciously decide to move them, sending another sharp gust across the office. "Adam, I strongly recommend that you shut the fuck up." Whatever he hears in my voice finally makes his grin weaken.

Lute shifts between us slightly and glares at me. "Don't threaten him." I look at her and answer, "Then keep him from deliberately trying to discover how much patience a saint actually has." For once, she seems to recognize that escalating things further would be a terrible idea.

Sera presses two fingers against her forehead and closes her eyes briefly. "Lora, sit down." I shake my head without taking my eyes from her. "I'm quite comfortable standing."

Her hands lower slowly to the desk as she studies me. "Your reassignment was temporary." My stomach twists because that is not even remotely an explanation. "That is not the problem."

Sera's expression hardens as she gestures toward Adam. "The Extermination itself was being challenged directly, and Adam is the commander responsible for the operation." She looks back toward me with the calm certainty of someone who still believes her reasoning makes sense. "I believed he should answer for his own actions rather than allowing the diplomatic office to stand between him and Hell."

I stare at her for several seconds before disbelief finally breaks through my anger. "Then he should have sat beside me." Sera says nothing, and somehow that silence irritates me more than an argument would have. "You could have contacted Gabriel, asked me to bring Adam into the meeting, or done literally anything except lie and send me off to babysit Cherubs."

Adam bites his lip hard enough that I immediately point at him. "If you laugh, I swear to God." He turns his face away while his shoulders shake once. Lute looks like she wants to murder both of us.

Sera's expression becomes colder. "I made a judgment call." My anger abruptly becomes very still. "It wasn't yours to make."

Her eyes narrow while I pull my hands away from the desk and straighten fully. "You outrank me as an angel, Sera, but I do not work for you." My pulse pounds in my ears even though my voice remains calm. "Gabriel appointed me to that position, and diplomatically my office stands beside yours rather than beneath it."

Sera's wings shift behind her while something defensive enters her expression. "I am well aware of your position." I hold her gaze without blinking. "Apparently not, because you tried to remove me from it."

For several seconds neither of us speaks, and the office suddenly feels much smaller. "Do you know what Evelyn asked the moment she entered that embassy?" Adam's expression changes because he remembers exactly what I am talking about. "She asked where I was."

My anger twists into something considerably more personal. "She expected me to be there because I am always there." I look back at Sera while old meetings, letters, conversations, and far more private memories rise painfully behind my eyes. "Instead she got Adam eating ribs, insulting her mother, insulting Charlie, insulting me, and then acting surprised when she buried him under treaty violations."

Adam immediately throws his hands into the air. "She looked exactly like Lilith!" I stare at him in disbelief before answering, "That does not somehow make calling her mother a bitch directly to her face diplomatic." He gestures wildly and asks, "Well, how the fuck was I supposed to know Lucifer made a second one?"

I stare at him without speaking while Lute slowly rubs her temple. Even Sera looks exhausted by whatever thought process produced that sentence. I finally point toward Adam and look directly at Sera. "This is why you send ambassadors."

Adam looks deeply offended and snaps, "Oh, fuck you." I ignore him and return my attention to Sera before he somehow drags the conversation even farther into stupidity. "And Evelyn is not the only Morningstar you managed to piss off." My voice lowers as I remember Charlie sitting beside her sister throughout the meeting.

"Charlie was there while Adam insulted her sister, her mother, and the government representing her family." Sera looks away from me for the first time since I entered. "Lilith is eventually going to hear exactly how both of her daughters were treated." Adam's amusement disappears another fraction when I continue.

"And Lucifer is going to hear that an army Heaven sends into his kingdom has repeatedly damaged property protected under the treaty." He waves one hand dismissively and says, "Lucifer hasn't done shit to Heaven." I turn toward him. "Because people have spent millennia making sure he never has a reason to."

That finally wipes away most of his grin. "He is not some absent king who stopped paying attention to Hell, Adam." I look between Sera and him while Lute remains silent. "He and Lilith actively rule, Evelyn currently exercises his authority in Pride, and you managed to antagonize their daughters while negotiating violations committed by an army operating inside their kingdom."

Lute frowns and folds her arms across her chest. "You're exaggerating." A short laugh escapes me without a trace of humor. "Evelyn already forced you to cut the Extermination in half."

Lute's expression becomes murderous while Sera lowers herself slowly into her chair. "That alone should tell you I am not exaggerating." Adam mutters something about lawyers being evil under his breath. I decide reminding him that Evelyn rules Hell would only encourage him.

The anger burning through me shifts painfully when I think about her again. Evelyn trusted me, not because I was an angel, not because I was a saint, and certainly not because she blindly trusted Heaven. She trusted me because I spent centuries earning that trust. "You made her think I abandoned my post without even telling her."

Sera looks up sharply at the change in my voice. "Do you understand how humiliating that is?" Something uncomfortable crosses her expression, but before she can answer Adam makes the catastrophic decision to grin again. "Wow."

I close my eyes immediately. "Don't." His grin only grows while Lute glances toward him suspiciously. "You are seriously fucking into her."

My eyes snap open so fast it almost hurts. Lute stares at him. Sera looks between us. Heat floods my face before I can stop it.

"Adam." His grin becomes enormous because apparently today is the day he chooses death. "Holy shit, you are." My halo ignites bright enough to paint half the office gold.

I take one slow breath while every scrap of sainthood I possess begs me not to strangle the First Man. "Finish that thought and I will introduce the First Man to the first saintly ass-beating." Lute makes a choking noise beside him that might actually be laughter. Adam stares at me with wide eyes before slowly sitting back down.

Sera clears her throat with obvious effort. "We are not discussing your personal relationship with Princess Morningstar." I answer immediately, refusing to acknowledge how warm my face still feels. "Wonderful, because it is none of your business."

Adam opens his mouth again. I point directly at him without even looking. "Don't." To everyone's surprise, he actually listens.

I turn back toward Sera before my patience has another opportunity to die. "Now we are going to discuss the actual problem." I pull the report toward myself and tap the cover with one finger. "I am returning to my position as ambassador, these violations are being formally investigated, and Exorcist command is no longer going around my office whenever Hell complains about something your soldiers did."

Sera studies me for several seconds before her eyes narrow again. "You are making demands of the Head Seraphim." I shake my head once. "No, I am telling you to stop interfering with Gabriel's office."

The room goes silent again because that distinction matters whether Sera likes it or not. "If you disagree, call him." Sera's eyes narrow while I hold her gaze. "I already did."

The realization appears slowly across her face because Gabriel now knows exactly what happened. Adam shifts uncomfortably in his chair. "And before coming here, I spoke to Azrael too." Sera closes her eyes briefly as though her developing headache has finally become physical.

"He was significantly less polite about this than I am being." Adam mutters, "Jesus." I turn toward him automatically and answer, "Wrong department." For the first time since I entered the room, Lute actually snorts.

Adam looks deeply betrayed that his own lieutenant found that funny. Sera looks down at the report again before releasing a long breath. "Leave the documents." I slide the folder toward her and answer, "I brought copies."

Her mouth tightens while I finally turn toward the doors. "Lora." I stop with one hand against the door and glance back over my shoulder. "What?"

Sera's voice is considerably quieter than it was before. "I did not intend to damage your relationship with Evelyn." My fingers tighten slightly against the door while something far more tired than anger settles into my chest. "You should have thought about that before deciding my voice was inconvenient."

Sera says nothing while I pull the door open. "Now I have to explain to Evelyn that I was never actually reassigned, and knowing her, she is going to be very calm about it." Adam snorts somewhere behind me, but this time I do not bother turning around. "And somehow that scares me considerably more than if she starts screaming."

Michael POV

I sit alone in my office with a photograph resting between my fingers, one taken long enough ago that Evelyn still wore her hair differently and Lucifer looked considerably less tired of everyone's bullshit. My brother stands beside his daughter with one arm around her shoulders, both of them smiling toward whoever held the camera while Evelyn's horns curl proudly above her head. My blue eyes soften despite myself as my thumb brushes across the edge of the image, lingering over Lucifer before drifting toward my devilish niece. Sometimes I forget how much of my family now exists on the other side of Heaven's gates.

A firm knock against my door pulls me back to the present, and my expression hardens immediately as I slide the photograph into the locked drawer beside me. "Enter." The doors open to reveal General Raziel, his usual composure noticeably strained as he steps inside carrying a thick report beneath one arm. I know before he reaches my desk that whatever he brought me is not going to improve my morning.

"Sir, we received the finalized reports concerning the latest Extermination and Hell's diplomatic response." Raziel places the folder in front of me before taking one step back, his face grim enough that I immediately stop thinking about anything else. I open it and begin reading through damaged royal properties, treaty violations, disputed Exorcist movements, and the agreement Adam somehow managed to leave with after facing Evelyn. By the third page, the warmth the photograph left behind has disappeared completely.

"Half a day." I stare at the amended terms for several seconds before looking up at Raziel. "Adam entered negotiations with my niece and somehow managed to lose half of the Extermination." Raziel's silence tells me he has already decided answering that question would only make my mood worse.

I continue reading until I reach the reports concerning protected Hellborn and Morningstar property damaged during the operation. My jaw tightens because unlike Adam, I understand exactly what those words mean when placed beside Evelyn's name. She will tolerate insults, posturing, and stupidity considerably longer than most people realize, but harm her family or give her legal justification to consider Heaven a genuine threat and that patience disappears quickly. Lucifer raised his eldest well, perhaps a little too well for Heaven's current comfort.

Raziel watches me carefully before asking, "Do you believe Hell would actually retaliate?" I lean back in my chair and look toward the enormous windows overlooking a Heaven so peaceful that children laugh in gardens where armies once trained. "If Evelyn truly wanted war, she could rally more of Hell behind her than anyone sitting in this realm seems willing to admit." The thought alone makes something cold settle beneath my ribs.

Hell is divided, violent, argumentative, and filled with creatures who would happily tear one another apart over territory, pride, money, or simple boredom. Yet I have watched Evelyn spend millennia pulling those creatures beneath one Crown while teaching them that whatever their differences, Heaven descending every year to slaughter their people gives them a common enemy. If she stood before Pride and called the Sins, the Goetia, the Hellborn, the Overlords, and even the damned beneath the Morningstar banner, far too many would answer her. More importantly, they would believe they were defending their home rather than merely obeying their Princess.

Raziel's expression grows darker. "And Heaven?" I look away from the report because the answer disgusts me more than I care to admit. "Heaven has not fought a true war in a very long time."

What passes for military readiness now would have embarrassed us when creation was young. The Exorcists cut through sinners who are almost completely incapable of harming them and return home congratulating themselves as though that resembles standing against an organized enemy capable of striking back. Most of Heaven has grown soft beneath centuries of safety, beautiful and peaceful and utterly unfamiliar with what real war feels like. Some days this realm feels less like the Heaven we once defended and more like a celestial nursery that has forgotten blood can stain gold.

That does not mean Heaven is defenseless, because the Archangels who remain are still among the most dangerous beings Father ever created. Gabriel still carries authority few would willingly challenge, Azrael has never needed an army to make an entire room remember what death means, and the others who remain in Heaven possess powers the Exorcists could barely comprehend. The Elders are another matter entirely, ancient enough to remember conflicts that Adam has probably convinced himself never happened. If all of us stood together, Hell would not walk through Heaven without paying dearly for every step.

But that is precisely the problem.

I no longer know whether all of us would stand together.

Gabriel would think first about the political disaster that allowed the situation to reach war at all, especially after discovering Sera interfered with Lora's diplomatic office without his approval. Azrael has never particularly enjoyed Heaven pretending inconvenient truths disappear because nobody wishes to acknowledge them, and I doubt these reports will improve his opinion. The surviving Archangels would each have their own loyalties, responsibilities, and thoughts about attacking Lucifer after thousands of years of separation. The Elders would be worse, because ancient beings rarely agree quickly when history, pride, and old wounds become involved.

Raziel remains quiet while I turn another page. "If war actually happened, sir, surely the Elders and Archangels would unite." I look toward him and wish I shared his certainty. "Eventually, perhaps."

Eventually is a dangerous word when armies are already moving.

Lucifer knows us, and that frightens me more than any report on Hell's military strength. He knows how Gabriel thinks, knows what will provoke Azrael, knows the temperaments of those Archangels old enough to remember him before the Fall, and knows exactly which Elders would argue before committing themselves. Evelyn has spent nearly ten thousand years learning from him while building her own understanding of politics and warfare. If father and daughter ever planned a war together, they would not simply attack Heaven's walls and hope strength carried them through.

They would exploit every hesitation.

They would know which factions needed distracting, which authorities would demand negotiation, and which ancient disagreements could delay a unified response. They would know that Winners make up enormous portions of Heaven's population and that most have never held a weapon in their afterlives. They would know our numbers are not what they once were. Worst of all, Lucifer would know exactly how reluctant I would be to raise my sword against him again.

My eyes move toward the locked drawer containing the photograph.

The number of Heavenborn has been declining for centuries, slowly enough that ordinary Winners rarely notice but steadily enough that the Archangels and Elders cannot pretend otherwise. Angels have perished, faded, or simply failed to be replaced as humanity's faith has weakened and fewer prayers reach Heaven with the strength they carried in ages past. I remember skies so crowded with wings that the horizon itself seemed alive, while now entire halls stand empty because nobody has been born to fill them. Even with the Archangels and Elders, numbers become painfully important when the enemy can replenish itself through every damned soul falling into Hell.

"Have the others received this?" I ask quietly. Raziel shakes his head and answers, "Not the complete report, sir, though Gabriel's office has the diplomatic records concerning Saint Lora and several copies have already reached Azrael." I nod slowly because that means the discussion has already begun whether Sera realizes it or not.

"Prepare copies for every Archangel still residing in Heaven and every Elder with authority over military or celestial security matters." Raziel straightens as he realizes I am no longer treating this as an embarrassing diplomatic incident. "Gabriel and Azrael receive everything, including the treaty breaches, while the others receive the complete military assessment once you've finished verifying it." His face becomes grim again.

"And Sera?" Raziel asks.

I stare at the report.

"Sera receives exactly what everyone else receives." Whatever authority she holds as Head Seraphim does not entitle her to control who understands a potential war involving my brother. "No altered summaries, no softened language, and no omission of anything Adam or the Exorcists did."

Raziel nods once. "What about the Speaker?" My expression shifts because she occupies a place in Heaven's hierarchy that has never fit comfortably beside anyone else's. "She receives a copy personally."

Even saying that leaves an unpleasant weight in my chest.

The Speaker has been having difficulty reaching Father.

That sentence should be impossible.

Father has ignored my calls before, vanished into whatever thoughts only He could understand, and allowed us to govern without explaining Himself for stretches of time that would have terrified younger angels. But the Speaker was different, because when Father wished to be heard without appearing Himself, she was the voice through which Heaven heard Him. Hearing even her admit that reaching Him has become difficult frightened me far more than I allowed anyone to see.

Raziel studies me for a moment before quietly asking, "Do you believe the Speaker will support preparing for war?" I shake my head because I genuinely do not know. "I believe she will support preventing one."

That may be the only thing everyone can agree upon. Gabriel will want diplomacy restored, Azrael will want the truth dragged into daylight, the Elders will want explanations, and the remaining Archangels will want to know why Heaven has stumbled this close to conflict with Lucifer without most of them being informed. Sera will have to defend her decisions, Adam will undoubtedly make everything worse the moment somebody allows him to speak, and Lora is probably already halfway through verbally flaying somebody alive. For once, I almost pity whoever happens to be standing in front of her.

Raziel reaches for the report, but I keep one hand resting against it. "Begin reviewing the legions quietly, and coordinate with the commanders serving beneath every Archangel willing to participate." His expression sharpens while I continue. "I want numbers, weapons, combat experience, defensive wards, and an honest assessment of how many Heavenborn could actually fight if the gates were breached."

"No mobilization?" he asks.

"Absolutely not." I finally release the folder and let him take it. "Nothing leaves these halls that Evelyn could reasonably interpret as Heaven preparing to invade Hell."

Raziel nods before turning toward the door, but I stop him before he leaves. "And make certain every Archangel and Elder understands one thing when they read that report." He looks back at me.

"Evelyn does not want a war." I know my niece well enough to believe that completely, because despite everything she is still the woman who spends more time preventing Hell from destroying itself than searching for excuses to destroy Heaven. "But if we convince her that Heaven intends to threaten her family, she will not hesitate simply because some people here still remember her as Lucifer's little girl."

Raziel's expression darkens. "Understood." The doors close behind him, leaving me alone again. I unlock the drawer and pull out the photograph, studying Lucifer's ridiculous smile and Evelyn's bright purple eyes as the weight of everything I just ordered settles around me. Heaven has Archangels, Elders, ancient weapons, powers Hell would be foolish to underestimate, and beings who have survived conflicts older than human civilization. Yet none of that changes the fact that war with Hell would mean fighting my own family.

My thumb brushes Evelyn's face. "Please don't make me choose between Heaven and you two." The terrible part is that I already know which choice would break me more.
