The mud was cold.
Not the damp chill of a Tokyo winter sidewalk, but a deep, sucking, living cold that clawed through the soles of Kōri's tabi and into the marrow of his bones. Rain hammered down in sheets, each drop a needle of ice against the back of his neck. The air stank of iron, pine resin, and the acrid bite of burning chakra.
He was on his knees.
His hands—smaller than they should be, calloused, wrapped in torn red cloth—gripped the hilt of a broken nodachi. The blade was chipped, the edge dulled, but the weight was perfect. A kendo prodigy's dream.
His body remembered.
His mind did not.
A Senju warrior loomed over him, face painted with hash-mark tattoos, leaf-emblem forehead protector slick with rain. The man's voice cracked like a whip:
"UZUMAKI! Seal the left flank or we're all dead!"
Kōri's brain short-circuited.
Uzumaki?
Red hair plastered his forehead. A spiral crest was stitched into his flak jacket, half-torn, flapping like a battle flag.
Before he could speak, the world tilted.
A black-haired blur descended from the smoke—three tomoe spinning in blood-red eyes.
Uchiha Izuna.
The nodachi rose instinctively.
Kōri's stance was textbook chūdan no kamae—middle guard, tip aimed at Izuna's throat.
But his body forgot.
The sword tip wavered. His knees buckled.
Izuna's blade flashed.
A wet shlick.
Kōri's head left his shoulders.

Kōri's skin blistered.

He ducked right.
Shuriken shadow clones—hundreds—rained down like iron hail. One punched through his eye.

Simulation #4 – The Shield
He hid behind the Senju.
Izuna's Katon: Gōka Messhitsu turned the entire squad into ash.
Death #4: Vaporization.
By Simulation #47, Kōri had mapped the battlefield in blood.
Left flank: Fire jutsu.
Right flank: Shuriken storm.
Center: Izuna's personal kill zone.
He stopped running.
He watched.
Simulation #48 – The Sword That Forgot
Kōri drew the nodachi.
The stance was perfect—kendo no kamae, weight on the back foot, hips coiled.
But when he swung, the blade dragged like a plow.
Chakra flow was wrong.
His tenketsu were clogged, pathways rusted shut.
Izuna parried with a lazy flick.
The nodachi shattered.
Kōri's torso followed.

Simulation #100 – The First Reward
After 52 more sword deaths, Kōri felt it.
A single tenketsu in his right wrist—thin, like a pinhole—opened.
Chakra trickled through.

A single drop of blood.
Izuna laughed. "An Uzumaki with a blade? Entertaining."
Then Amaterasu.
