Chapter 2 - Chapter 1: Really?

Beeping, Chirping of a heart monitor began to fill her ears. She grunted, slowly coming to her senses. She opened her eyes, just to cover them with her arm. It was bright; the entire room was filled with sunlight. She rubbed her eyes, still drowsy. Then, a sudden knock on the door made her jump, but her fears subsided immediately after a doctor came into the room.

"Ah, Miss Haeriana. Nice to see you are finally awake."

He walked towards her and sat down with a clipboard in his hand. The Man had gray hair but was rather slender, with quite the long beard. Memellia didn't speak. Her chest still had quite the bit of pain, and she wasn't the best talker when it came to real-life conversations.

"Miss Haeriana, my name is Doctor Leiarn. We ran a couple tests on you while you were unconscious. Specifically, an MRI and a PET scan."

He let silence trail on for a couple of seconds. Memellia broke that quietness.

"So, you ran scans on me. Why are you being so quiet-"

She coughed a couple of times, spitting out some blood. It was painful, but by now, she had grown used to this pain. She ignored it so much, she actually gained a tolerance to it.

He sighed softly, lifting his clipboard to read it.

"Well, Miss Haeriana, we have some bad news. The scans found late-stage angiosarcoma inside the lining of your heart. With the research and tests we ran, we can predict you have about two weeks left before your heart gives out. If you came to the hospital sooner, we could have..." He stopped for a moment, raising his fist to his mouth. It was clear he had her condition on his mind... She didn't blame him; it was her own fault things got this bad in the first place. He cleared his throat, then lifted the clipboard again. "Excuse me, never mind, pardon me. We urge you to finalize your will and say goodbye to anyone you know with the remaining time you have. Two weeks is only an estimation; you might not even have that long."

Memellia glanced at him, her hands in her lap as she lay down on that white hospital bed. "Really...two weeks...?" She stared back at the bed, shocked about what the doctor had told her. She really didn't even know how to react to something like this; her mind was a blank slate after hearing she only had two weeks. "That's all I have left here, huh...? I see..." She exhaled softly, trying to get her thoughts together, but hearing that left her a mess. She wasn't the type to think about death, but now she was face to face with her own mortality. The only thing that filled her mind now was the impending date of her demise. She looked back up, turning her head towards the doctor. "Can I...get a moment alone?"

Leiarn nodded softly, picking up his clipboard. "Of course, Miss Haeriana. If you need any assistance, just use the button below your bed to call the nurses. Oh, and there's a notebook on the counter for whenever you want to write your last wishes." He began walking away, opening the door, but before he left, he glanced back at Memellia, a saddened expression on his face, before walking out the door.

Memellia stayed there, lifting her hands to look at them. They were shaking; she was afraid, but she did not want to admit it. She sighed, dropping her hands back into her lap. She glanced towards the sun-lit window, looking out at the city just outside. It was so full of life, people all around, but here she was in solitude. She was going to die...she was really going to die. She looked down, unable to express any form of emotion at the news she had just been given. She grunted, weakly standing up. The IV was connected to her, so she just dragged it with her. Every bend near her chest caused pain, but she had gotten accustomed to it. Slowly, she made her way towards the window and sat down on the floor, staring at the busy town outside. She must have been at least 6 stories up in this hospital to see that far.

At least for an hour, she sat there, looking outside the glass towards the outer scenery. She was contemplating what she should do. She never was the religious type, and she was sure it was too late to repent for her life now anyway. The least she could do before everything went black was apologize to her brother, but would he even care to visit after she had been absent this entire time? She could only sigh at the inner arguments going on inside of her head. With so little time, she couldn't even piece together a proper plan for what to do. In her condition, they certainly wouldn't let her outside. She looked up at the bright sky, her thoughts halting to a ringing silence.

"Whoever...or whatever might be listening...please, give me another chance...I'll make it right."

She didn't even know what she was talking about. No one was going to hear her anyway; it's not like she could suddenly become religious at the end of her life when it mattered. She looked down, holding her face in her hand.

"What am I even doing...?"

She grunted, standing up from the floor. She had spent way too much time just moping; she had to get a plan for the time after her demise. She looked up at the sun-blazing sky one last time, before turning her gaze into the room. She couldn't rely on some supernatural force to help her now; she had to do things her own way, like she always had to. She walked to the counter near her bed and grabbed the notebook that was sitting there, as well as the black pen beside it. There, she began writing her will. She wanted her brother to inherit everything she had other than her apartment, so she wrote down every individual thing, including her own bank account, seeing as she wouldn't be using it when she was dead anyway. Then, after around 20 minutes of writing, she signed her name on each paper.

"This should be enough."

She sighed again, coughing a couple more times, causing her to inadvertently grip her chest. It was causing her more pain than ever before...a sign perhaps? A sign of her death being near. She snarled at her own thoughts. She couldn't waste time moping. She had to do what she could while she still had time left. Slowly, she stumbled back over to the hospital bed, lying back down as the sun began to set outside. Then, a knock from the door.

"Miss Haeriana, may I enter?"

It was Dr. Leiarn again. She had no objections; rather, no strength to really protest.

"Sure, doc."

Leiarn entered the room, holding the same clipboard and the same darkened expression that was on his face earlier.

"We took the time we had to contact any remaining family members about your condition; however, only one was able to answer the phone, being your brother."

She turned her head sharply, her gaze widened.

"You what?"

"We contacted your brother about your condition."

She had already put in her will that she wanted her brother to have everything, but she was sure the doctors didn't know that.

"Whatever. He won't visit. I haven't even seen him once in the past 10 years."

"Miss Haeriana, he said he was making plans to come right away."

"Yeah, he doesn't want to- he said what? No fucking way."

She was genuinely shocked. She was sure he didn't ever want to see her again after essentially abandoning their family for the military life. She scratched her head, unsure of what to even say. This was an outcome she certainly didn't expect.

"He should arrive tomorrow."

"I see."

She had nothing else to say. She just wanted to be alone with her thoughts to even think about what to say to her brother; after all, they haven't talked once in a long time. What should she even talk about, leave him with? A farewell? A hopeful message? She scoffed at this predicament the hospital put her in, but something inside her was slightly happy that she was meeting her brother again.

"He's really coming, huh...?"

She put her hand down, looking back out the window.

"I see. Thank you for letting me know, Doc."

"Miss Haeriana, if you have anything to say to me, please talk."

"I don't, I assure you...but please, leave me alone again; it's the only time I can put my thoughts together."

The room became silent. Her thoughts were rushing into her head about what to do, what to say, when to say it, but all of this was for when her brother actually visited her. She didn't want to overthink too much.

"I see. Very well. Call us for any assistance needed." He walked out of the room again, closing the door quietly.

The sky was dark now, and her eyes began feeling heavy. She lay down fully, closing her eyes, and as she slowly slipped into sleep, she only thought one thing.

"Maybe it won't be so bad to see him one last time...maybe not..."
