Chapter 662 - The Second Batch of Test Subjects

Under the current structure of the Imperium, the Adeptus Mechanicus enjoyed immense autonomy and scientific freedom.

As long as they did not openly betray humanity, side with Chaos or xenos, or trigger massive, uncontrollable catastrophes, Imperial authorities and the Inquisition rarely interfered directly in their research. This was especially true for a Magos like Osiris, who possessed exceptional backing and delivered undeniable results.

After all, everything Osiris was working on—streamlining the Space Marine modification process, delivering high-quality recruits to the Imperial Fists, and developing new war machines for the Collegia Titanica—offered massive, tangible value to the Imperium. Both Primarch Rogal Dorn and the high-ranking leadership on Mars knew exactly how important he was. Because his projects did not openly violate core Imperial law, Dorn and Mars were more than willing to grant him a generous amount of operational leeway.

Sigismund understood this perfectly. He had come to fulfill his duty of oversight and issue a reminder, not to demand a reckoning.

"I understand," Sigismund finally said, his gaze deep. "Your research is vital to the Imperium, Magos Osiris. But remember, dealing with xenos is like walking on the edge of an abyss. Keep everything firmly under control. Do not let this compromise your loyalty to the Imperium and the Emperor, and do not give those long-eared aliens any opportunity to harm our interests. The Black Templars will keep watching the situation on the Death World."

"Thank you for the warning, High Marshal. The interests of the Imperium and the pursuit of knowledge do not conflict in my work," Osiris replied calmly. "Everything is running according to plan."

Sigismund nodded, said nothing more, and turned to leave the gantry. He knew he had done all he could. Osiris's domain belonged to the Mechanicus and high-level technology; as long as he did not cross the line, the Imperium needed his talents.

The laboratory doors sealed shut behind him. Osiris filed away Sigismund's inquiry and his own response, marking it as a settled matter. The exchange didn't distract him for a moment; it had gone exactly as expected. He turned his attention back to the incubation vats and the constantly updating experimental data.

The parameters for the second phase of the gene-seed trials needed a final calibration based on the feedback from the first batch of recruits. Meanwhile, the Collegia Titanica had sent over the detailed physical templates and resource logs for their specialized guard warriors, which needed to be integrated into his optimization framework to set up a new cultivation line. He also needed to check the parsing progress of the STC fragment database to see if any retrieved files could boost his current projects.

It was a massive workload, but the priorities were clear. The affairs on Pandora and the Death World were already being handled by his avatar and subordinates. His main body needed to focus entirely on the delicate experiments that would directly shape his power and future.

The gene-seed laboratory aboard the Eternal Seeker entered a new phase of intense operation. The initial conditioning for the second batch of forty candidates was complete. They were housed in separate preparation blocks, undergoing basic physical training, loyalty indoctrination, and initial health monitoring.

Much like the first batch, these youths had only a vague idea of their ultimate fate: they were chosen to serve the Emperor, undergo modification, and become elite warriors. None of them knew, nor needed to know, that a portion of them would serve as test subjects for experimental procedures.

Osiris stood before the main console, the mechanical tendrils behind his back operating multiple interfaces simultaneously. The holoscreen displayed real-time health data for all forty subjects, alongside the fine-tuned plans for the second-phase gene-seed.

"Subjects A-21 through A-30: inject enzyme variant Gamma-7. Objective: increase neural sheath growth by eight percent to observe reaction time improvements and monitor for potential nervous system overheating."

"Subjects B-11 through B-20: implant modified Black Carapace cell clusters, supplemented by trace psychic radiation at a specific frequency, to test for early compatibility and higher data transfer with power armor neural links."

"Subjects C-01 through C-10: introduce timed oxygen-deprivation stress cycles during standard organ incubation. Objective: pre-condition the cardiovascular and muscle tissue to improve energy efficiency and evaluate endurance in extreme combat environments."

Orders that had been verified through repeated simulations were handed down. Deep within the lab, automated injection arrays, radiation emmitters, and environmental controls began their precise work. Tech-Priests murmured data prayers as they monitored the stability of each station, ensuring the adjustments did not cause any tissue rejection or genetic breakdowns.

At the same time, planning began for the specialized cultivation line requested by the Collegia Titanica. Unlike the gene-seeds optimized for the Imperial Fists, which aimed for a well-rounded enhancement, the Titan Guard required highly specific traits.

They needed an innate affinity for machinery, stable bodily functions under heavy electromagnetic and energy interference, a deep internalization of the Cult Mechanicus creed, and the specific tactical discipline required of Titan-attached infantry.

This meant Osiris's team had to develop specialized sub-protocols built on top of their main optimization templates. For instance, they needed to boost the subjects' bio-electric sensitivity to specific metal ions and energy waves, and adjust their endocrine systems so their bodies could remain stable while spending long hours near a Titan's massive plasma reactor fields.

They even had to design specialized mental programming to deeply plant the duties of maintaining the Titans, protecting the machine spirits, and obeying the Princeps' commands into their minds.

This naturally added to the project's complexity and resource demands. The first shipment of specialized materials from the Collegia Titanica had already arrived aboard the Eternal Seeker and was going through inventory inspection. Osiris had to make sure the main progress of the gene-seed project wasn't disrupted while dedicating enough processing power and lab space to kickstart this new line.

The pressure was significant, but it was easily managed through efficient scheduling and resource allocation. His mind coordinated the timelines of every sub-project like a flawless clockwork engine, balancing the demands each experiment placed on incubation vats, chemical supplies, power, and staff. Any potential bottleneck was identified ahead of time and resolved by tweaking parameters, pulling from stockpiles, or slightly delaying non-critical steps.

While he was entirely focused on coordinating these experiments, an encrypted communication request from Mars broke through, marked with high priority. The caller was a senior logistics Magos serving under Archmagos Dominus Xol.
