The forest whispered.
It wasn't the wind, Riel realized, but something older—voices echoing faintly through the leaves as if the trees themselves remembered. He pushed through the ferns, clutching the crude wooden staff he'd carved the night before, his grip slick with sweat.
Beside him, Lyra walked in silence. Her steps barely disturbed the grass, her pale hair glinting silver beneath the morning light. For someone who looked barely older than him, her calm was unnerving.
"Lyra," Riel began hesitantly, "you said before that this place isn't… normal. What did you mean by that?"
She didn't stop, but her gaze flicked upward, watching the canopy sway. "Because this world is awake. Every tree, every stone—it's all part of something greater. When people like you came, it started changing."
"People like me?" Riel frowned. "You mean humans?"
"No." She finally stopped and looked at him. Her silver eyes glowed faintly. "I mean Players."
Riel blinked. "Wait—you mean people with those… systems? Menus? Skills?"
Lyra nodded, expression unreadable. "The moment your kind arrived, balance was lost. The dungeons grew restless. The beasts began mutating. The Whispering corruption spread across the land."
"I don't have a System," Riel muttered defensively. "Nothing popped up when I woke up here."
Lyra tilted her head, studying him. "That's why you're still alive."
He froze. "What do you mean?"
Before she could answer, the ground shuddered. Birds exploded out of the trees. A low growl rippled through the forest, followed by glowing eyes appearing between the trunks—wolf-like creatures, their fur streaked with black mist, their teeth glinting unnaturally white.
Lyra's hand brushed her waist. "Stay behind me."
"Wait, what—"
She moved before he could finish. Her dagger gleamed as she stepped into the open, her body flowing like liquid silver. The wolves lunged, but she was faster. Each motion was precise—a step, a twist, a flash of her blade. The air filled with the sound of slicing mist.
When the last beast fell, its body dissolved into glittering motes that sank into the soil. Lyra's breathing barely changed.
Riel's heart pounded in his chest. "You… what are you?"
She wiped her dagger clean on a leaf. "A guardian. Or I was, before the world fell sick."
He looked down at the fading mist. "Sick? From what?"
Lyra's expression darkened. "From them. The ones who came from beyond. System Users. The ones who called this world a game."
He stared at her. "But that's impossible… this is a game world."
"Is it?" she whispered, stepping closer. "Then tell me, Riel—does it still feel like one?"
He opened his mouth to respond, but a faint chime interrupted him. A small flicker of light appeared before his eyes—a translucent icon hovering in the air.
[Warning: Unauthorized Data Detected.]
[Trace Initiated…]
Riel's blood ran cold. "What—what is this?"
Lyra's head snapped toward him. "You triggered it. Damn it." She grabbed his wrist. "Run."
The forest trembled as the trees began to twist unnaturally, branches curling toward them like claws. A low hum filled the air, echoing like the voice of a machine waking from sleep.
They sprinted through the undergrowth, roots breaking beneath their feet. Riel's vision flickered with fragments—glitches, static, and for a brief second, a flash of someone's face.
A boy with dark hair and determined eyes. A face that looked exactly like his own.
He stumbled. "That… who—"
Lyra pulled him up before he could fall. "Don't stop! It's reading you!"
The whispering around them grew louder, overlapping voices of pain and code.
"Return to the System… unauthorized entity detected…"
Finally, they burst into a clearing. Lyra raised her hand and slammed her palm against the ground. A wave of light erupted, forming a barrier that pushed the mist back. The whispers faded.
Riel dropped to his knees, gasping. "What was that?"
Lyra didn't answer immediately. Her eyes were glowing faintly as she watched the barrier pulse. "That… was the System itself, trying to erase you."
He stared at her, chest heaving. "Why me?"
Lyra turned to him, her voice soft but firm. "Because you weren't meant to exist here. You're outside its control. And that makes you dangerous."
A chill ran down Riel's spine.
He looked at his hands, trembling. "Then what am I?"
Lyra's gaze softened. "Maybe the only one who can break it."
