Chapter 986 - Chapter 405: Peter Pettigrew?

Katie was still panting, she was really frightened just now.

Harry took out the black gem again, and looked at it under the sun for a long time without seeing anything.

"Let's go back to the castle first," Harry suggested, "I'll go and talk to Professor Dumbledore about this, I think he should know what this thing is."

They walked together towards the Hogwarts castle, Katie still trembling as they walked down the path.

"Go help," Harry signaled to Neville to assist Katie.

Neville obediently approached and supported Katie.

After returning to the castle, Harry indicated for them to wait there.

"I'll go find Professor Dumbledore first," he said, "You wait here for a moment, I think he will definitely ask you all to come as well."

However, when he went to the Headmaster's Office, he found it empty.

"Albus is at the Wizengamot," Phineas's portrait said, "He won't be back until tomorrow."

"Got it, thank you, Phineas," Harry politely thanked Phineas.

Since Dumbledore was not there, Harry found Professor McGonagall.

Upon hearing that Gryffindor's Katie Bell was attacked by a Dark Magic Item, Professor McGonagall's face instantly became very grave.

"Where are they?" she asked.

"Waiting at the castle entrance," Harry replied.

Without another word, Professor McGonagall walked out of her office.

Sure enough, at the castle entrance, Katie and the others were still waiting there.

"Bell, and you all." Professor McGonagall glared at them sternly, "Come with me."

They followed Professor McGonagall upstairs into her office, the snow-covered windowpanes rattling in their frames, despite the fire crackling warmly in the fireplace, the room was still cold.

Professor McGonagall closed the door and quickly walked to the desk, looking at Katie who was still shivering.

"Speak," she said sternly, "What happened?"

Katie, trembling, began to stammer out her story.

She told Professor McGonagall that she had gone to the bathroom at the Three Broomsticks, and when she came back, she remembered nothing. The rest was filled in by her close friend Lynne, who said that Katie had seemed odd after returning from the bathroom, holding an unmarked package; then they argued violently because Lynne thought Katie shouldn't agree to deliver an unknown object; when the argument was fiercest, they started to snatch the package, and it tore open.

"Alright," Professor McGonagall said tenderly, "I understand the situation... Bell, and Lynne, you head to the hospital wing, let Madam Pomfrey give you something to calm your nerves."

The two nodded and left the office.

After they left, Professor McGonagall looked at Harry.

"Harry." She asked, "What do you think was in that package?"

"Dark Magic Item, clearly, Professor."

Harry said, taking out the black gem from his pocket, placing it on the table, and pushing it toward Professor McGonagall.

Professor McGonagall wiped her hands, conjured a pair of tongs with her magic wand, and picked up the gem.

She carefully scrutinized it for a moment, then shook her head and said, "I can't tell what this is, perhaps Albus has seen something like this."

She then asked again, "Tell me, after Bell touched this gem, what happened?"

"She rose into the air," Neville said quite fluently, "and then started screaming, before dropping down... Later Harry hit the gem with a spell, Katie returned to normal, and black smoke began to rise from the gem, it looked extremely evil—it definitely wasn't something good."

"Yes, I know too, Longbottom, it's not something good." Professor McGonagall rubbed her eyes, then said, "Who do you think gave Bell this gem?"

"No idea." Harry replied candidly, "We just happened upon this incident, Professor, as for the mastermind behind it, I can only guess it's likely the Death Eaters."

"Death Eaters..." Professor McGonagall seemed to mutter to herself, repeating softly before issuing the dismissal, "Alright, I've got the details, you can leave now."

On the way back to the dormitory, they were still discussing the matter.

Katie returned to the Gryffindor common room that evening, and once back, she especially went to thank Harry.

"Thank you, Harry." She said gratefully, showing the gloves to Harry: "Look, Madam Pomfrey said it was a very potent Dark Magic Item, if I hadn't been wearing gloves at the time, I might not be standing here talking to you safe and sound... Of course, I also have to thank you for intervening in time, which avoided a nightmare."

"You're welcome." Harry nodded and said.

"Oh, Harry," Katie suddenly said again, "I think I remember what the person who gave me the item looked like... He seemed a bit short and a bit chubby... I glimpsed through the cloak and saw he had somewhat buck teeth, those big front teeth looked a bit like a rat."

"Peter Pettigrew?" Harry immediately thought of someone.

Ron shivered.

"Mate, don't scare me," he said, trembling.

"Why would I scare you?" Harry glanced at Ron, "You surely wouldn't think he hasn't forgotten being kept by you, planning to sneak into Gryffindor Tower at midnight, transform back into a rat and crawl into your bed to renew old ties, right?"
