The treatment room smelled of antiseptic, medicinal herbs and the faint ozone left behind by Nen-assisted equipment.
Yuzuki sat on the edge of the examination bed with fresh tape wrapped tightly around his ribs beneath his dark shirt. His injured arm remained supported in a sling, while the muscles around his spine ached whenever he shifted his weight. Bisky stood behind him, checking the binding around his back for what felt like the tenth time, and Wing watched the arena broadcast from beside the wall.
The third Battle Olympia quarterfinal was already underway.
Kastro stood near the monitor with his arms folded. "Cassandra Vale has taken more damage than Hisoka, but her aura keeps rising."
"That's the point of her ability," Yuzuki replied. His uncovered Six Eyes followed the flow of crimson aura spreading through Cassandra's battered body. "The longer the fight continues, the more dangerous she becomes."
Bisky tightened one of the straps around his ribs.
Yuzuki winced. "Was that necessary?"
"You moved."
"I just took a breath."
"Do that more carefully."
Yuzuki decided not to argue and returned his attention to the screen.
Match Three: Hisoka Morrow vs. Cassandra Vale
Cassandra Vale had built her career around surviving injuries that would have ended most fights.
Her Hatsu, Debt Collector, converted pain and accumulated physical damage into greater aura output and physical strength. A fractured rib strengthened her next blow. A torn muscle made her aura denser. The closer her body came to failure, the more power she could force from it.
The ability did not heal her.
Every injury remained, even while it made her stronger.
By the time the broadcast returned to the arena, one side of Cassandra's face was swollen and her right shoulder hung at an unnatural angle. Crimson aura covered her body in uneven waves, growing thicker whenever she moved through the pain.
Hisoka had spent most of the match allowing that strength to build.
He retreated between her attacks with a lightness that made the damage beneath his clothing difficult to judge. A line of blood ran from his mouth, and one sleeve had been torn away, but his expression showed more interest than concern.
Cassandra drove her fist into the floor where Hisoka had been standing. Stone split beneath the blow, sending fragments across the arena. Hisoka avoided the debris by pulling himself sideways with a strand of Bungee Gum attached to a broken tile.
"He could have ended this earlier," Kastro said.
"He wanted to see how far her ability could go," Yuzuki replied. "Now he's waiting for the moment the strength becomes harder for her body to control."
Cassandra tore her fist free and charged again. Her movements had become less precise, but every step cracked the floor beneath her. She forced Hisoka toward the edge of the arena, using wide attacks to remove his escape routes.
Hisoka allowed himself to be cornered.
Cassandra leapt, drawing her damaged arm back for a downward strike. The aura gathered around her fist was greater than anything she had released earlier, but the circulation through her shoulder had become unstable. Her body was struggling to direct the power created by Debt Collector.
Hisoka flicked two fingers.
A strand of Bungee Gum attached to Cassandra's rear heel snapped tight, shifting her balance before she could complete the strike. Her fist missed Hisoka's head and shattered the stone beside him.
Before Cassandra could recover, several more strands contracted around her injured arm. Hisoka did not try to overpower the strength gathered there. He trapped the limb against her body and interrupted the rhythm through which her aura was being released.
The power created by her accumulated pain remained inside her damaged frame.
Cassandra gasped as the crimson aura around her flickered. Her other hand reached for Hisoka, but her balance and breathing had already failed.
Hisoka stepped inside the weakened attack and struck the side of her neck with a short, controlled blow. Cassandra's eyes lost focus, and her body collapsed before the unstable aura could cause further damage.
The referee rushed forward and began the count. Cassandra did not rise.
"The winner advancing to the Battle Olympia semifinals is Hisoka Morrow!"
Hisoka looked down at her for a moment. He had not stopped the fight out of kindness. Cassandra's ability had reached the point where another exchange might have destroyed her body before he could learn anything more from it.
An opponent who survived could become interesting again.
A dead one could not.
Hisoka turned toward the private seating above the arena. Chrollo sat alone with Skill Hunter resting against one knee, watching the medical team carry Cassandra away.
Their eyes met across the distance.
Hisoka's smile remained, but the amusement behind it faded. Chrollo would face Yuzuki before he did. Whatever happened in that semifinal would belong to them first, and Hisoka disliked the thought more than he had expected.
His fingers tightened around the cards in his hand until one bent at the edge.
Match Four: Lucien Cain vs. Mira Sol
The final quarterfinal began after the arena floor had been repaired.
Mira Sol entered first, smiling toward the crowd as thin paths of silver aura appeared beneath her feet. Her ability allowed her to establish straight routes across open space, accelerating along those lines with enough speed to leave bright streaks behind her.
The movement was not unrestricted. Mira needed clean lanes, a stable starting point and enough distance to build speed. Within those conditions, very few fighters could react before she struck.
Lucien Cain waited in the centre of the arena with one hand resting on the silver head of his cane.
The Uncrowned King wore a tailored grey suit that appeared better suited to a formal dinner than a martial arts tournament. His calm expression did not change when the referee began the match.
Mira moved first.
A silver line flashed across the arena. She passed Lucien's left side and opened a shallow cut across his cheek before changing direction. A second route carried her behind him, where she struck his shoulder and disappeared before he could turn.
Lucien did not chase.
Mira formed two intersecting paths, using the first as a feint before accelerating down the second. Her heel struck Lucien's ribs and forced him back half a step.
The crowd erupted.
"He's letting her establish the routes," Wing said from the treatment room.
Lucien wiped the blood from his cheek and extended his aura.
Nothing visible appeared, but Mira's next silver path dimmed halfway through its formation.
Lucien's Atmospheric Press spread gradually across the arena, changing the resistance within the air. He did not create one crushing wall. He formed overlapping areas of pressure, each one slightly denser than the last.
Mira accelerated along another route.
Her first steps were as fast as before, but her speed began to fall as she entered Lucien's field. The air pushed against her body from every direction, forcing her to spend more aura to maintain the line.
She abandoned the route before reaching him and formed a shorter one from the side.
Lucien increased the pressure there as well.
Mira adjusted intelligently. She created false paths, changed her starting angle and used broken sections of the floor to conceal which line she intended to take. Two attacks still reached Lucien: one cut through the sleeve of his suit, and another struck his thigh hard enough to disturb his stance.
He accepted both.
Each exchange revealed another lane she needed.
Lucien's field continued to spread until the arena contained no truly open space. Some areas pressed downward against Mira's shoulders, while others resisted her from the front or made turning difficult. Every possible route demanded more aura than the one before it.
The silver streaks grew shorter.
Mira's breathing became audible through the broadcast microphones. She forced herself along another path, but the pressure changed halfway through it. Her acceleration disappeared, leaving her several metres from Lucien without enough speed to complete the attack.
Lucien stepped aside and tapped her ankle with his cane.
Mira stumbled, rolled and formed another silver line from the ground. Before she could launch, the air around her thickened enough to interrupt her breathing.
She cancelled the route and pushed herself upright.
Lucien approached at the same measured pace he had maintained throughout the match. "Your speed is exceptional," he said. "But every path you use requires the world around you to cooperate."
Mira formed three more routes, searching for a weakness in the field. Each one faded before it reached full strength.
Lucien stopped several steps away.
"I do not need to become faster than you," he continued. "I only need to leave you nowhere to accelerate."
Mira lowered her stance and tried one final charge. She managed three steps before the surrounding pressure brought her almost to a stop. The strain forced her to one knee, and the silver paths around her disappeared.
Lucien rested the tip of his cane against the floor rather than her throat.
"Yield."
Mira's shoulders rose and fell as she struggled to breathe. She looked across the arena, searching for one remaining route, but found none.
"I yield."
The referee ended the match.
Lucien withdrew his aura immediately, allowing the pressure to disappear before the medical team entered the ring. He had several visible injuries, but his breathing remained steady as the announcer declared him the final semifinalist.
The monitors throughout Heaven's Arena changed to display the updated bracket.
BATTLE OLYMPIA SEMIFINALS
KAGETSU YUZUKI VS. CHROLLO LUCILFER
HISOKA MORROW VS. LUCIEN CAIN
The audience's reaction shook the arena.
Every remaining fighter had already defeated someone powerful enough to hold a place on Heaven's Arena's highest floors. Betting markets began changing within seconds, while commentators argued over whether Yuzuki's injuries would prevent him from surviving Chrollo's versatility.
Yuzuki looked at Lucien's name beneath Hisoka's.
"If Lucien reaches the final, Atmospheric Press could interfere with my footwork and weaken the way I position Blue."
Bisky pulled the back of his shirt down over the medical tape. "You are fighting Chrollo first."
"I'm aware."
"You're thinking about the final."
"I can think about two things."
"You can barely breathe and think about one."
Kastro ignored their argument and stared at Chrollo's name beside Yuzuki's. "Orion had time to watch each ability before deciding whether to copy it. You may not have that luxury."
Yuzuki's expression grew more serious.
"Chrollo won't simply hide his abilities from me. He'll show me the ones he wants me to understand."
---
Late that night, Chrollo sat beside the window of a private holding room overlooking the city.
The lights below painted faint reflections across the glass. Skill Hunter rested closed on the table beside him, while Shizuku sat on the couch cleaning her round glasses with the edge of her sweater.
"Yuzuki's ribs are broken," she said. "His back is injured, and one arm isn't working properly."
Chrollo continued looking through the window. "I know."
"If you attack his left side first, his body will probably fail before he understands what you're doing."
"That would not answer anything."
Shizuku replaced her glasses and studied his reflection. "What are you trying to answer?"
Chrollo remained silent for several seconds.
"This match may decide whether Yuzuki can remain outside the Spider forever."
His tone made the meaning difficult to separate. He could have been speaking about recruitment, protection or the danger of allowing someone like Yuzuki to stand beyond his control. With Chrollo, those desires often existed together.
Shizuku did not ask him to explain.
"Don't break him beyond repair," she said. "I want him back afterward."
Chrollo's gaze shifted slightly toward her reflection.
"I will be careful."
"That isn't the same as agreeing."
"No."
Shizuku accepted the answer with a small nod. She understood Chrollo too well to expect a promise he could not honestly make.
Outside the room, Hisoka stood silently in the dark service corridor.
He had heard enough.
The card between his fingers split down the middle as his aura sharpened around him. Chrollo was not merely preparing to fight Yuzuki. He was treating the match as a question only the two of them could answer.
Hisoka smiled, but there was no amusement in it.
The semifinal bracket glowed on a monitor at the end of the corridor, its four remaining names displayed beneath the golden crown.
Every path now led toward the same final.
