Part 4 – The Arena of Forty-Eight

"Let's go."

The students left the academy building, following their instructors across the training grounds. The path stretched farther than usual, winding through open fields, dense patches of trees, and stone pillars, until it opened onto a vast arena unlike anything they had seen before.

The field seemed to stretch endlessly, surrounded by tall wooden barriers, stone platforms, and observation towers. Flags fluttered in the wind along the edges, each bearing the emblem of a participating academy. The words "The Vanguard Tournament" were emblazoned on a massive banner hanging across the main entrance, the letters bold and imposing.

Students had already gathered in groups across the arena. Some whispered strategies, others scanned the field with wide eyes, and a few fidgeted nervously. The triplets stuck close together as they took in the sheer scale of the place.

"All of them are from the Land of Fire?" Kaito muttered, his gaze sweeping the crowd.

"It looks like it," Ayame said quietly, her tone calm but her eyes alert.

Haruto said nothing, his mind already scanning potential threats and allies.

Eventually, the instructors guided all forty-eight participants toward the center of the arena. Teachers and senior instructors lined the outer edges, observing, while a few referees prepared the flags and equipment for the matches.

After a tense moment, a man stepped up onto a raised platform, making himself visible to all. His voice carried clearly across the enormous field.

"Welcome, students, to The Vanguard Tournament," he announced. Murmurs rippled through the crowd. "This year's tournament will begin with two rounds of team combat, before progressing into solo matches for the final stage."

The students straightened, excitement and nerves rippling through them.

"There are forty-eight participants in total," the man continued. "You will now be divided into twelve teams of four."

Eyes darted around, wondering who they would be paired with.

"Only nine teams will advance to the next stage. Three teams will be eliminated immediately."

A hush fell over the field as the reality sank in.

The man glanced down at another instructor standing nearby, holding a pad of papers. They exchanged a few quiet words, pointing at names and nodding. After a brief pause, the man climbed back onto the platform.

"Now, I will explain the rules for the first round."

The crowd quieted completely.

"This round will be a capture-the-flag exercise," the instructor announced, his voice cutting across the arena with authority. "Each team will receive a flag. Your objective is simple: protect your own flag while attempting to capture another team's."

He let the words hang for a moment, scanning the students with a piercing gaze. "Unlike previous drills, a captured flag does not mean immediate elimination. You will have a short window to reclaim it. If your team fails to recover the flag before the timer runs out, only then will your team be eliminated."

A ripple of murmurs ran through the crowd, eyes narrowing, fists tightening. The tension was tangible, thick in the air.

"The round will continue until three teams have failed to retrieve their flags. At that point, the exercise will end, and the remaining nine teams will advance to the next stage."

He stepped back, letting the anticipation build, then raised his hand. "Team assignments will now be announced. Pay attention—every second, every decision, could mean the difference between survival and elimination."

The arena fell silent. Every student knew this was no ordinary exercise. This was a test of strategy, of teamwork, and of nerves. And for some, it would be their first real taste of failure.

The arena stayed silent after the instructor finished explaining the rules. The young students stood in rows across the vast stone ground, waiting. Some tried to look calm, others whispered quietly to the person beside them.
