Chapter 163 - Chapter 27 — The First Night of Fear, Part8

Part 8 — Children Carrying Fear

Yuna's expression fell immediately.

"…Hina…"

Before she could continue—

the classroom door slid open.

Daigo entered.

Instantly, the conversations faded.

The room straightened slightly.

But today—

Daigo noticed something immediately.

Fear.

Not loud panic.

Not chaos.

Just fear sitting differently inside every student.

Amaya sat calmly, her expression controlled.

But there was still something unsettled behind her eyes.

Like someone trying not to think too deeply about what could happen next.

Arashi remained completely still.

Quiet.

Unreadable.

His expression barely changed at all.

But his eyes silently observed everything around him with a composure far too mature for his age.

Ayame looked calm outwardly.

Yet every mention of deployment or danger subtly drew her attention.

Not fear for herself—

fear of losing the people closest to her.

Daichi looked genuinely terrified.

His hands tightened unconsciously against the edge of his desk.

Haruki showed little visible concern.

Whether he truly didn't care or was simply ignoring it—

even Daigo couldn't tell.

Haruto looked calmer than Daichi at first glance.

But Daigo noticed the truth immediately.

The stiffness in his shoulders.

The tension in his breathing.

The way his eyes subtly reacted whenever sudden sounds came from outside the classroom.

He looked like he was barely holding himself together.

Like one loud noise could make him break down crying at any second.

Hina sat quieter than usual.

Fear sat visibly behind her expression now.

Izumi continued trying to reassure everyone despite her own uneasiness.

Kaito stayed unusually silent.

Not frozen by fear—

just quietly wishing all of this would end peacefully so life could return to normal again.

Misaki looked distracted the entire time.

One hand tightly gripping his sleeve.

His father was already in the hospital.

And now the war tension had begun too.

Naoko showed almost no visible reaction.

Raizo remained expressionless.

Not emotionless—

just strangely accustomed to tense situations already.

Riku kept glancing toward the windows repeatedly.

His mother had also been deployed.

Sanae looked visibly uneasy.

Like someone trying desperately not to imagine dying.

Shin looked similar to Raizo.

Quiet.

Detached.

Hard to read.

Near the back, Souta quietly mumbled under his breath—

"…Is this how it ends…?"

Tetsu remained outwardly relaxed.

And Yuna—

despite trying to encourage others—

still looked frightened every time the room grew too quiet.

Daigo took all of it in silently.

Then walked toward the front of the room with the attendance sheet in one hand.

For a brief moment—

he simply looked at them.

Not as academy students.

But as children carrying fear they were too young to fully understand.

Then he began calmly.

"…Amaya Homura."

"Present."

"…Arashi Homura."

"Present."

"…Ayame Inazuma."

"Present."

"…Daichi Mori."

"…Haruki Aoba."

"…Tetsu Yonamine."

"Here."

"…Yuna Sekiguchi."

"Present."

Daigo marked the final name quietly.

The scratching of his pen against paper echoed faintly through the room.

Everyone was present.

But after last night—

none of them felt like ordinary children anymore.
