Part 5 — The Great Hall War Begins
Kaito smiled slightly.
"Luck."
A brief silence.
Then Haruto slowly closed his notebook.
Kaito immediately tensed.
"…Why did you close it."
"No reason."
"That's never good."
And for the first time that evening, both of them stopped writing completely, staring at each other like a small storm was about to start.
Kaito immediately tensed.
"…Why did you close it?"
"No reason."
"That's never good."
And for the first time that evening, both of them stopped writing completely, staring at each other like a small storm was about to start.
The silence stretched for a few seconds.
Then Kaito pointed at Haruto's notebook.
"You only got that answer because you copied the teacher's method."
Haruto blinked once.
"…Copied?"
"Exactly."
Haruto leaned back in his chair.
"I solved it."
"You followed instructions."
"That's called solving it."
"No. That's called borrowing intelligence."
Haruto stared at him.
Kaito stared back.
The silence returned.
Then Haruto slowly stood up.
Kaito immediately straightened.
"…Why are you standing?"
Haruto closed his notebook and picked it up.
"No reason."
"That answer again."
Haruto walked past him toward the living room.
Kaito quickly followed.
"Haruto."
No response.
"Haruto."
Still nothing.
"Haruto, what are you doing?"
Haruto stopped beside the sofa.
Then calmly picked up a cushion.
Kaito froze.
"…No."
Haruto picked up a second cushion.
"Kaito."
"No."
A third cushion.
"Haruto."
A fourth.
"Kaito."
The two stared at each other.
Then Haruto placed the cushions in a straight line through the middle of the hall.
Kaito looked at the line.
Then at Haruto.
Then back at the line.
"…What is this?"
Haruto folded his arms.
"A border."
For a moment, Kaito simply stared.
Then a grin slowly spread across his face.
"No way."
Haruto pointed toward one side of the hall.
"My territory."
Kaito immediately pointed toward the other side.
"You're serious."
"You questioned my intelligence."
"You questioned mine first."
"That was different."
"It literally wasn't."
For several seconds neither moved.
Then Kaito suddenly grabbed a nearby blanket.
"Claiming resources!"
Haruto's eyes widened.
"Hey!"
Kaito sprinted across his side of the hall.
"This fortress now belongs to the Great Nation of Kaito!"
"You can't just claim things!"
"I already did!"
Haruto immediately grabbed two cushions and stacked them near the sofa.
"Then this is my fortress."
Kaito gasped dramatically.
"Military expansion!"
"Stop calling it that."
"You're preparing for war!"
"You started the war!"
"History is written by the winner."
Haruto rubbed his forehead.
"You make no sense."
"Yet somehow you're still participating."
Haruto opened his mouth.
Paused.
Then sighed.
"…Fair point."
Kaito immediately raised both fists into the air.
"Victory!"
"The war hasn't even started."
"Psychological victory."
Haruto grabbed another cushion.
"You're an idiot."
"And you're losing to one."
For the next few minutes, the peaceful hall slowly transformed into a ridiculous battlefield of cushions, blankets, chairs, and completely made-up military strategy.
Meanwhile, down the hallway, Ayame remained completely unaware that her brothers had somehow turned finishing homework into a territorial conflict.
