Sophie's tears finally broke free, falling onto Alex's back. She lowered her head and quickly wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.
"Alright, alright—if we keep this up, your mommy won't be able to leave at all." Con took Hale from Ned's arms. "Come on, let Daddy and Mommy have a moment. We'll wait over there."
Con and Sandy led the children to a row of nearby seats. Hale was still sniffling softly. Ella handed him a tissue. Alex sat at the very end of the row, staring fixedly at Sophie and Ned.
Ned stood in front of her. For a few seconds they simply looked at each other.
"Call me the moment you land, no matter how late. I'll be waiting."
"Okay, I will."
"If you're tired, rest. Don't push yourself."
"I know."
Ned paused, then reached out and tucked the stray strands of hair at her forehead behind her ear. "Two weeks is too long. The kids can't stand it… and neither can I…"
Sophie smiled, eyes still glistening. "You already said that yesterday."
