Chapter 707 - WC 2023 - 1

**CHEPAUK**

There are cricket grounds, and then there is the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Chepauk does not just host a match. The air off Marina Beach is humid. It sits over the yellow stands and tells on anyone who spends fifty overs in the middle.

Sunday, October 8, 2023. The heat on the Coromandel Coast was one thing. Thirty-eight thousand people in blue were another. The yellow seats had disappeared under India shirts.

Match 5 of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup. India versus Australia. A dry pitch. A long afternoon.

Up in the BCCI VIP box, the glass cut the noise.

Krithika sat in the front row in a dark blue kurta, watching the outfield. Beside her, Ritika Sajdeh and Anushka Sharma talked as the players warmed up.

The real noise in the box came from the two children with their hands on the glass.

Aadhya wore an India jersey a size too big, DEVA and 6 on the back. She waved at the crowd, sure they were cheering for her.

Rishi, in a polo shirt, did not wave. He was looking at the twenty-two yards in the middle.

"The pitch is very brown, Amma," Rishi said. "There is no green on it. The ball is going to spin slowly."

Krithika put a hand on his shoulder. "That's right. It's a spin track. Nana will have to get his field right today."

Down on the ground, Siddanth Deva walked out from the pavilion. The dark blue jersey stuck to his shoulders. Sunglasses on. The stands were calling his name.

Pat Cummins was waiting in the middle, already sweating.

Match referee Javagal Srinath held the coin. Ravi Shastri had the microphone.

"A very warm welcome to the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The heat is up, the stands are full, and the hosts start their World Cup now," Shastri said. "Pat, Siddanth, let's have the toss."

Srinath flipped the coin.

"Tails," Cummins said.

It landed on the dry pitch.

"Tails," Srinath said.

Shastri turned to Cummins. "Pat, you have won the toss. What do you want to do?"

"We are going to bat, Ravi," Cummins said. "It looks dry. It will slow down and turn more in the second innings under lights. We want a total on the board while the pitch is at its best, then let our spinners bowl."

Shastri turned to Deva.

"Siddanth, bowling first in this heat. Did you want to bat?"

"We would have preferred to bat, yes," Deva said. The crowd roared. "But we do not control the toss. We control the cricket. There may be a bit of dew later, which could help the ball skid. Right now it is about hitting our lengths. We have spin for this pitch."

"And the eleven? There has been talk about Shubman Gill."

"Shubman is recovering from dengue," Deva said, looking at the camera. "He is resting. He is not available today. Sanju Samson comes in and will open with Rohit Sharma."

He named the rest.

"Virat Kohli at three, myself at four, KL Rahul at five, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah. Three frontline spinners. The boys are ready."

The captains shook hands. Up in the box, the commentators set the day.

"Pat Cummins has won an important toss at Chepauk," Nasser Hussain said. "Win the toss here, you bat first nine times out of ten. You do not want to chase against Ashwin and Jadeja when the ball is gripping."

"But look at that Indian side, Nasser," Ian Smith said. "Even without Gill, they look strong. Samson opening is a bold call. He uses his feet to spin. And Deva has picked three spinners. Australia have to play the slow bowling if they want anything past 250."

Umpires Richard Kettleborough and Chris Gaffaney walked out. India broke from the huddle and took their places.

The World Cup had started.

David Warner and Mitchell Marsh opened. Survive the new ball, then play the spin.

Jasprit Bumrah took the new white Kookaburra.

From the first over, India hit their lengths. Bumrah ran in, good length, angling across Warner. The ball zipped and beat the edge.

At the other end, Mohammed Siraj hit the deck hard, seam up, looking for whatever bounce Chepauk would give.

In the third over, Siraj struck.

Back of a length, off stump. Marsh tried to punch it through cover off the back foot. The ball stopped in the dry surface, took a thick edge, and flew to first slip. Virat Kohli dived left and took it low.

Australia 5 for 1. Chepauk went up.

Steve Smith walked out. He and Warner saw that hitting through the line was a mistake here. They rebuilt. Soft hands. Singles. Respect the quicks.

They took Australia to 43 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.

Then Deva took the fast bowlers off.

Kuldeep Yadav from one end, Ravindra Jadeja from the other.

The game changed.

The ball gripped. Jadeja fired it into the stumps. No time to use the feet. Kuldeep tossed it up, invited the drive, and turned it away from the right-handers.

Warner and Smith were tied down. The rope looked a long way away. The rate dropped. Over after over with no boundary. Dots piled up.

In the 17th over, Warner went.

He tried to hit his way out against Kuldeep. He came down, looking to loft long-on. Kuldeep saw him, pulled the length back, and put overspin on it. The ball dipped, gripped, and turned past the bat.

KL Rahul took it and took the bails off. Warner was well out.

Australia 74 for 2.

Marnus Labuschagne walked in. The story did not change. Ashwin came on, bowling at home. Carrom ball, off-break, change of flight. The middle order had nowhere to go.

Smith and Labuschagne swept and scrambled and dragged it past 110. The heat was telling. The spinners were not offering a release ball.

Near the 27th over, Smith was on 46. Australia needed him to stay.

Deva, at mid-off, wiped his forehead. He looked at the board. He looked at Smith, who was starting to pick Kuldeep.

Deva took his cap off and gave it to the umpire.

The crowd saw the captain mark his run-up. A murmur went around the stands.

In the box, Ian Smith and Harsha Bhogle leaned in.

"Siddanth Deva is bringing himself on," Harsha said. "A reminder for those watching. Deva has 1,347 international wickets. He is tied with Muttiah Muralitharan at the top of the list."

"One more wicket," Ian Smith said. "One more, and he stands alone. Highest run-scorer in ODIs, and one ball from the most wickets the game has seen."

**WICKET 1,348**

Deva stood at the top of his mark.

He did not need extra pace on this pitch. He needed to hit a length.

26.1: Back of a length, fourth stump, 138 kmph. Smith shuffled across and dropped it at his feet. Dot.

26.2: A touch fuller. Seam up. The ball held its line. Smith left it. Through to Sanju. Dot.

26.3: Wider, looking for the drive. Smith stepped across and padded it away outside off. Dot.

Chepauk went quiet.

26.4: Deva ran in.

No outswinger. No slower ball.

Hard length, middle and off, 141 kmph. Wrist behind the seam.

Smith shuffled across, planted the front foot, and played forward.

The ball hit a crack in the dry clay. It gripped and nipped back into the right-hander.

Late. Sharp. Inside the bat.

It beat the inside edge and hit the front pad, in front of middle.

"HOWZAT!" Deva and the whole Indian side went up.

Richard Kettleborough's finger went up.

Plumb lbw.

Chepauk erupted.

The cameras on the rope shook. Gold and blue fireworks went up from the roof.

"HE'S DONE IT!" Ian Smith shouted. "SIDDANTH DEVA TRAPS STEVE SMITH IN FRONT! HE HAS GONE PAST MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN! HE IS THE LEADING WICKET-TAKER IN INTERNATIONAL CRICKET!"

"One thousand, three hundred and forty-eight wickets!" Harsha said. "Look at this ground! He holds the run record. Now he holds the wicket record."

India swarmed him. Kohli ran in from cover and grabbed him. Rohit, Hardik, and Jadeja piled in.

Smith looked down at the pitch. He did not review. Before he walked off, he tapped his bat on his pad and nodded at Deva.

Deva came out of the huddle and smiled.

He took his cap from the umpire, held the white ball up, and turned to all four sides of Chepauk. The crowd stayed on their feet for three minutes.

In the VIP box, Krithika smiles and clapped. Aadhya bounced and pointed at her father.

Smith gone, the middle order went with him.

Deva struck again in his third over. A slower ball, dipping. Maxwell went for the reverse sweep, top-edged, and Bumrah took it at short third.

Jadeja then bowled Labuschagne, turning it past the edge, and trapped Alex Carey lbw two balls later. Jadeja: 3 for 28. Kuldeep and Ashwin cleaned up the tail. No room to free the arms.

Australia, having won the toss on a dry pitch, were all out in 49.3 overs for 186.

India walked off. Chasing 187 at home looked straightforward.

Chepauk still had work in it. Australia still had a new ball.

---

The break was short. Shadows stretched across the ground. Target: 187.

Rohit Sharma and Sanju Samson walked out. The crowd wanted a clean chase.

Mitchell Starc took the new ball. Left-arm, new ball, World Cups. Early wickets were his game.

Samson took strike. He played Starc straight, 145 kmph, then ran a wider one to third man for a single.

Rohit came on strike.

Left-arm pace had troubled him. The front foot planted early. The late inswinger was the ball.

Starc knew.

1.4: A touch shorter, 144 kmph. Rohit defended from the crease. Dot.

1.5: Starc changed the angle, hit the crease, and let it go at 147 kmph.

Full, middle stump. It did not hold its line. It swung late, back into the right-hander.

Rohit's front foot went forward. The bat came down late.

Inside edge missed. Pad. In front of middle and leg.

Australia went up. Starc on his knees.

Chris Gaffaney's finger went up.

Plumb lbw.

Rohit stood a second, looking at the pitch. He knew it was hitting. No review. Bat under the arm. Long walk back.

Chepauk went silent.

"HE'S GONE! STARC IN THE FIRST OVER!" Nasser Hussain said. "Rohit Sharma, lbw, for a duck. The left-arm inswinger again. Australia are in this."

India 2 for 1. Target 187.

Virat Kohli walked out. The crowd rose.

He tapped his bat, looked at the field, and tapped gloves with Samson.

"The ball is swinging late, Sanju," Kohli said. "Starc wants the pads. Hazlewood will hit the deck. We do not chase the game. Play the new ball, turn the strike over, and build."

"I'm watching it, Virat bhai," Samson said. "The bounce is a bit tennis-ball. If they drop short, we can pull. Let's see off the new ball."

The next twenty overs were proper one-day batting.

They did not panic. They did not slog. They played straight and ran hard.

Josh Hazlewood came on from the pavilion end, fourth stump, hard length. Kohli played him with soft hands, dropped it into the off side, and took sharp singles. Hazlewood could not pile up the dots.

When Starc came back with a 148 kmph bouncer, Samson showed why Deva had picked him.

He did not duck. He rocked back, rolled the wrists over the bounce, and pulled it along the ground to deep square leg.

"That is class from Sanju Samson," Ian Smith said. "He picked the length early, used the crease, and put it away. He looks set at the top."

Pat Cummins brought on Adam Zampa.

Zampa tossed it up on the dry pitch. Kohli and Samson did not let him settle. They used their feet, drove through cover, or went back to cut late past point.

They ran hard. Singles became twos. The Australian outfield felt the heat.

The board moved. Fifty partnership. Then a hundred.

In the 22nd over, Samson stepped out to Zampa and lofted him over wide mid-off for a one-bounce four.

He raised his bat. Fifty. The first over was forgotten. The platform was there.

In the 24th, trying to push on, he swept a flatter ball from Glenn Maxwell. It hurried on, took the top edge, and looped to short fine. Starc took it.

Samson walked off to a full stand. 55.

He and Kohli had put on 112. The required runs were in double figures.

India 114 for 2. Target 187. 73 needed.

The announcer: "Incoming batsmanโ€ฆ the Captain, Siddanth Deva."

Chepauk rose again. The man who had taken the record a few hours earlier.

Deva came down the steps, reached the middle, and tapped gloves with Kohli.

"Good knock, Virat," Deva said, taking guard. "You and Sanju broke them. Let's finish this."

"The pitch is slowing down, Sid," Kohli said, wiping his face. "Zampa is getting some grip. The quicks are tiring."

"Then we play the pace," Deva said.

They had batted together for years. It showed.

Deva did not wait long. Gaps, hard running. When Cummins dropped short, Deva rocked back and punched him through cover for four.

Kohli looked set. He was thinking about a hundred. He drove Zampa through cover, into the eighties.

In the 32nd, facing Hazlewood, he tried to go on. Back of a length, outside off. The ball held up.

Kohli went for the pull, looking for midwicket.

He was a touch late. Not quite on top of it. Bottom of the bat. Not enough carry.

It went high. Labuschagne, on the deep midwicket rope, settled and took it, reverse cup.

"CAUGHT IN THE DEEP! VIRAT KOHLI FALLS SHORT OF A HUNDRED!" Harsha said. "He took on the short ball. The pitch held it up. A mistimed pull. But what an innings. 85, and Chepauk is on its feet."

Kohli tucked the bat under his arm, shook his head at the missed hundred, and walked off. 85. The chase had been a wreck at 2 for 1. He had put it right.

India 150 for 3. Extras 10. 37 needed.

KL Rahul walked out. The hard work was done.

"Knock it around, KL," Deva said. "No risks. We walk this home."

They did. Good balls defended. Spinners milked. Loose balls put away.

Starc came back. Deva played a 145 kmph yorker down to third man for four. Rahul lofted Zampa straight, and the target was in single figures.

In the 40th, facing Cameron Green, Deva stepped out to a full ball and drove through cover. The ball hit the rope.

Match over.

India chased 187 with 10 overs left, winning by 7 wickets.

Deva 36 not out. Rahul 15 not out.

The Indian players jogged off the field, shaking hands with the exhausted Australian team. Deva shared a warm embrace with Pat Cummins, acknowledging the hard-fought contest in the brutal heat.

As Deva walked up the pavilion steps, he didn't head straight to the dressing room. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat, but a wide, brilliant smile illuminated his face.

He turned his gaze upward, searching the VIP corporate boxes.

He found the glass enclosure.

Standing right against the pane, bouncing up and down with uncontrollable joy, was Aadhya. She was wearing her oversized blue jersey, pointing frantically at the pitch. Beside her, Krithika was beaming with pride, a massive smile on her face as she clapped along with Anushka Sharma and Ritika Sajdeh. Rishi stood calmly next to his mother, watching the post-match rituals with his usual, serious observation.

Deva raised his heavy willow bat high in the air, pointing it at the VIP box. He offered a wave specifically to his family.

The moment Aadhya saw her father waving, she shrieked in delight, slapping both her tiny hands against the glass and waving back furiously. Rishi offered a polite wave.

The World Cup campaign had begun with a flawless victory. The tactical machine was humming perfectly.ย

---

The moment Siddanth Deva hit the winning boundary, closing out the match and officially cementing his status as the highest wicket-taker in international history, the internet violently combusted.

@sachin_rt (Sachin Tendulkar): 1,349 wickets. Let that sink in. A fast bowler maintaining that level of fitness, skill, and hostility for 15 years, while simultaneously holding the batting records. Congratulations to Siddanth Deva. The undisputed greatest all-rounder the game has ever seen. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ

@Murali_800 (Muttiah Muralitharan): Records are meant to be broken, but I never thought my wicket tally would be broken by a man who also opens the batting! A phenomenal achievement by a true giant of the sport. Well played, Siddanth! ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

@Virat_Army_Delhi: Virat Kohli scoring 85 under pressure and Deva finishing the game. The Kings of Indian Cricket are looking absolutely lethal! We are winning this World Cup! ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ”ฅ

@CricketNerd_IND: The audacity of Siddanth Deva. He comes on to bowl, takes a wicket to break a 15-year-old world record, gets a standing ovation for three minutes, and then casually bowls the next ball like it was a net session. The man's aura is terrifying! ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ

@Priya_Vlogs: Aadhya bouncing up and down in the VIP box in her oversized jersey while Deva waved to her at the end of the match! My heart completely melted! He is the Devil of Cricket but the absolute sweetest dad! ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ’™

@AussieSportsFan: Right, well. We won the toss, batted on a pitch, and still got strangled by the Indian spinners. Then Starc gets Rohit for a duck, and we still lose by 7 wickets. India at home is going to be a nightmare to beat. Fair play. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ˜”

@Stats_Guy99: Let's look at the math. Siddanth Deva: Highest run-scorer in history. Highest wicket-taker in International history. Most centuries across formats. He has completed the game of cricket. ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ‘‘

@MemeCentral_Desi: Australian Batsmen: "We survived Bumrah and Siraj!" Deva: "Cool. Here is Kuldeep, Jadeja, Ashwin, and me the highest wicket-taker in history." Aus: Panics in 186 all out ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’€

@TeluguBidda_99: Our Hyderabad boy taking the world record in Chennai! The south is celebrating today! Anna is unstoppable! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘‘

@Chennai_Super_Fan: Chepauk was electric today! The noise when Deva took that wicket was louder than any IPL final I've ever attended. The sea turned blue and roared for the King! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™

@ScienceGeek_007: The physics of that delivery to Steve Smith... pitching on off, holding the seam upright, and utilizing the cracks in the clay to impart backspin... Deva's bowling is applied science. ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ“

@Sarcastic_Indian: Rishi Deva giving a calm thumbs-up from the VIP box while his sister is bouncing off the glass is a sibling dynamic. The kid is already calculating the net run rate. ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ‘

@Deva_Empire_Forever: The ODI run record. The International wicket record. The World Cup campaign has begun. We are witnessing the chapter of his career. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“–

@BCCI_Insider: The dressing room is grounded right now. Deva made sure they celebrated the milestone, but the focus shifted to the next game against Afghanistan. The mission is the Cup. ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿคซ
