Chapter 60 - Valerius's Ultimatum

The surface world of Node-Prime did not know the quiet, heavy stillness of the subterranean salt caverns, nor did it share the wet, ambient warmth of the lower thermal blocks. Up here, miles above the bedrock and deep salt conduits, the sky was a permanent shroud of violent, ash-choked blizzard winds that screamed through the spires of the High Directorate Citadel. Massive atmospheric harvesters—gargantuan structures of black iron and reinforced alloy—groaned against forty-knot gales, their rusted superstructures encrusted with thick sheets of jagged black ice. Solar-mirror arrays rotated on towering steel pillars, casting harsh, blinding white spotlights through the churning snow onto the vast obsidian plaza below.

At the center of the Citadel's private airfield, resting on heavy hydraulic landing pads that hissed continuous clouds of superheated steam, stood the massive, menacing silhouette of the Apex Aegis—Archon Valerius's personal airborne command flagship.

Four hundred feet from bow to stern, the Apex Aegis was an airborne dreadnought clad in heavy, overlapping plates of matte-black tungsten and composite ceramic. It was built not merely for surface transport, but as a mobile fortress capable of surviving deep-mantle quakes, orbital reentry, or sustained artillery bombardment. Massive heavy-thrust grav-turbines mounted along its flanks hummed with a deep, bone-rattling bass frequency that vibrated through the solid stone tarmac, instantly melting the surrounding ice drifts into rushing streams of steam and water that froze solid seconds after trickling beyond the ship's radiant heat perimeter.

Inside the flagship's tactical sanctuary, the atmosphere was sterile, freezing, and silent save for the rhythmic, low hum of server stacks and the soft pinging of surface telemetry monitors. Archon Valerius stood before a massive, floor-to-ceiling viewport that overlooked the snow-swept obsidian plaza and the jagged spires of the Citadel beyond. He was a towering, imposing figure clad in polished silver composite plate armor, his chest bearing the embossed crest of the High Directorate—a stylized sun clamped within iron jaws.

Half of his face had been replaced with sleek, mirror-finish cybernetics following the First Salt Rebellion two decades prior. His remaining organic eye, a cold, pale blue, scanned the glowing holographic data overlays that floated in the air before him. The red telemetry streams were scrolling relentlessly, detailing the full extent of the disaster at Sector 5.

[CASUALTY REPORT: FIRST LEGION / FORWARD PENETRATION FORCE]

[SIEGE BREAKER UNITS: 3 ATTRITION LOSSES (TOTAL DESTRUCTION)]

[VANGUARD INFANTRY: 64% INCAPACITATED / DECEASED]

[POSITION LOST: SECTOR 5 MAIN CONCOURSE]

[NODE 07 STATUS: UNCONTROLLED / REBEL HELD]

Behind him, the heavy pneumatic airlock doors hissed open with a sharp vent of pressurized nitrogen. Sub-Commander Vane stepped onto the raised iron catwalk, his boots clicking sharply against the steel grating. His face was pale beneath his tactical visor, his vocal filter emitting a dry, metallic rattle with every breath. Behind Vane, two medical droids hovered on quiet anti-grav thrusters, pushing a glowing, suspended stasis pod containing the scorched, unconscious form of Captain Kaelen.

Valerius did not turn around immediately. He raised his heavy right gauntlet, his armored fingers slowly tracing a line of frost that was forming on the interior glass of the viewport.

"A sixty-four percent casualty rate," Valerius said softly. His voice was a low, gravelly rasp that seemed to resonate through the steel deck plates underfoot. "Against a collection of malnourished miners, line-workers, and subterranean refugees wielding copper rivets and steam-driven mining drills. Tell me, Vane... how does an elite, fully mechanized Vanguard division fall to a crowd of peasants in a salt pit?"

Sub-Commander Vane stopped at the edge of the catwalk, bringing his heels together and bowing his head low. "The initial breach at Gate Zero went precisely according to tactical projections, Archon. The Siege Breakers collapsed the upper barricades within seconds of deployment. The civilian militia was routed from the primary plaza almost immediately."

"And yet," Valerius murmured, his cybernetic eye flaring with a sharp, crimson reticle as he finally turned his head to face his subordinate, "I am looking at three ruined forty-ton assault vehicles on my telemetry board, and Captain Kaelen is currently floating in a medical gel tank with his suit's internal power core fused to his spine. Continue your explanation."

Vane tapped his data-slate frantically, projecting a high-definition battle reconstruction into the air between them. Wireframe models of the Sector 5 plaza flickered into existence, showing the moment the lead Siege Breaker was destroyed.

"It was not the miners, my lord," Vane insisted, his voice trembling slightly despite his efforts to remain composed. "It was the boy. The Abyss Engine carrier—Danial. He did not merely deploy localized kinetic strikes as he did during the Sub-Level 9 encounter. The telemetry recovered from Captain Kaelen's ruined suit indicates that the carrier synchronized his internal energy output directly with the bedrock harmonic frequency of Node 07."

"Resonance inversion," Valerius stated flatly, his pale blue eye narrowing.

"Yes, Archon," Vane confirmed, displaying the energy spikes on the holographic display. "When Captain Kaelen deployed the Class-4 kinetic suppression field, the carrier did not attempt to overpower it directly. He routed the Abyss Engine's acoustic output through the floor plating, feedback-looping the gravitational generator inside the tower-shield. The resulting shockwave didn't just break the shield—it inverted the Siege Breaker's forward momentum and shattered the structural framework of four surrounding support pillars. The boy is adapting to the Selar conduit at an exponential rate. Every time we engage him, his operational control deepens."

Valerius walked toward the stasis pod, his heavy steps ringing like iron mallets against the floor. He stopped beside the glowing blue glass, looking down at Captain Kaelen's scarred, pale face. The captain's chest rose and fell in shallow, artificial breaths, surrounded by healing gel and medical monitoring leads.

"He is adapting because we gave him room to breathe," Valerius said, his tone devoid of emotion. "We treated him like a bandit king or an insurgent leader. We sent small strike teams, infantry squads, and isolated siege units, attempting to surgically prune a tumor while leaving the host intact. The High Directorate Council believed they could preserve the subterranean infrastructure, harvest the thermal output of Node 07, and quietly pluck the carrier from the crowd."

"The Council is currently in a state of absolute panic, Archon," Vane offered, lowering his slate slightly. "The total loss of Sector 5 has caused a cascade failure across the secondary thermal distribution lines. Sector 12's luxury residential domes have lost thirty percent of their floor heating. The central agricultural hydroponic bays in Sector 2 are experiencing rapid frost build-up. Three district councilors have already submitted formal demands for an immediate emergency session. They are suggesting... diplomatic overtures."

"Diplomatic overtures?" Valerius repeated. A low, dry sound escaped his throat—a laugh that carried no humor whatsoever. "They wish to offer terms to an awakened Abyss Engine? They sit in their heated glass towers, drinking distilled water and wrapped in surface furs, believing that ancient Selar technology operates on the same logic as a municipal strike. They would attempt to negotiate with a wildfire while standing in a room full of dry gunpowder."

"What are your orders, then, Archon?" Vane asked, stepping forward. "The remaining Vanguard legions are staged at the surface perimeter, but the Council has not authorized a full-scale orbital or vertical bombardment. They fear losing the sub-reactors permanently."

Valerius turned away from the stasis pod and walked directly toward the flagship's main command bridge at the front of the vessel. The heavy steel doors parted automatically, revealing a cavernous flight deck where dozens of cybernetically augmented flight officers sat locked into armored control cradles, their hands moving over glowing arrays of switches and tactical screens.

"Sub-Commander Vane," Valerius commanded, his voice booming over the ambient noise of the flight deck. "Purge the High Directorate Council's administrative override codes from the Apex Aegis's main core."

Vane blinked, stunned. "My lord? That is an explicit violation of the Directorate Charter. Removing the Council's command link is considered an act of high treason—"

"The Directorate Charter was written for an era of peace and compliance," Valerius interrupted, stepping onto the central command dais at the center of the bridge. He raised his gauntlet and slammed his palm onto the ship's primary command console. "It was not written to face the awakening of a Selar weapon. As of this second, all surface forces, planetary artillery, and Vanguard legions are under direct, absolute martial command. We are no longer attempting to pacify Sector 5. We are going to erase the threat."

[COMMAND DIRECTIVE: ARCHON VALERIUS]

[FLAGSHIP 'APEX AEGIS' ENGINE ENGAGED]

[COUNCIL OVERRIDE CODES: PURGED]

[WEAPONS SYSTEM: SECTOR-BREACH CANNON UNLOCKED]

[AUTHORIZATION: CLASS-ZERO PURGE PROTOCOL INITIATED]

The flight deck lit up with harsh amber warning lights as the flagship's computer systems executed the command. Across the surface Citadel, alarms began to blare as the Apex Aegis severed its control links to the civilian government, taking absolute control over the military grid.

Vane gripped the railing of the catwalk, his mind racing as he realized the sheer scale of what Valerius was proposing. "Archon... if you deploy the ship's Sector-Breach Cannon directly into the primary vertical shafts, the structural integrity of the upper mantle will be ruined! Sectors 4, 5, and 6 will collapse into each other! The thermal reactors will suffer immediate containment breaches, and millions of gallons of boiling salt brine will flood the lower residential vaults! Everyone down there—rebels and civilians alike—will be wiped out!"

Valerius stood tall on the dais, his reflection gleaming cold and unyielding against the front viewport as the ship's massive grav-turbines roared to maximum power outside.

"Then the lower levels will become a tomb of salt and iron," Valerius said softly. "And when the dust settles, we will rebuild the foundations on top of their graves. Signal all remaining surface divisions. Unseal every transit shaft from Gate One to Gate Twelve. Prep the primary battery."

He looked out over the sweeping blizzard as the massive dreadnought began to rise slowly into the ash-filled sky, its heavy underside ventral cannons rotating slowly downward toward the frozen crust of the earth.

"We descend in two hours," Valerius declared. "And this time, nothing returns to the surface."
