Chapter 1 - chapter 1:the beginning of the end(rewrite)

In a cosmic expanse where reality itself seemed suspended, two humanlike silhouettes, endless in scale, stood suspended in the void.

The first figure broke the eternal silence. "Who would have thought that I would spend my final moments with my mortal enemy as my sole companion?"

The second figure let out a low vibration that sounded like a chuckle. "Trying to kill each other for eons has made us more akin to friends than enemies. I like to think we merely chose different paths. But in the end, both of us stood firmly by our beliefs—until the bitter end. Literally, in your case."

The dying entity sighed, the sound echoing across the empty space. "In the end, the only thing that matters is who gets the last laugh. I will leave you with two truths. First, some of those high and prestigious figures within the council are already conspiring with the invaders. It isn't just petty side-deals or minor exchanges. It is total betrayal."

He paused, granting his eternal rival a moment to digest the gravity of the words, before continuing. "Second... I have already launched my final plan. My successor will inherit my mantle. They will never see it coming."

The second figure retorted, his massive form shifting. "Are you so grievously wounded that you forget who sits among them? They have specialized diviners. The very ones who created the Path itself. Do you truly think you can hide an heir from them?"

A raspy hackle tore from the throat of the dying cosmic power. "I already know that. That is the beauty of it. Even I do not know who, where, or when he will show up, or what he will choose to do. They will know he exists, yes. They will feel the ripple. But it could be tomorrow that he is chosen, or eons from now. They may even unknowingly help him along his journey. But they will never know his identity until the final moment of their lives—as he drinks and bathes in their blood."

"A scheme born of an obsession with freedom," the second entity answered softly. "It fits your personality perfectly. I hope your progenitor succeeds. Goodbye, old friend."

He watched in silence as the colossal silhouette of his oldest enemy disintegrated into stardust, scattering into nothingness.

"I understood you better than anyone," the lone figure whispered into the empty void. "But I will be to your heir his greatest enemy, and also the only one who truly understands his burden. After all, I am Light, and he is Darkness."

Eons passed. In the mortal realms, the legend of the first vampire—the harbinger of absolute darkness—had faded into myth. No one believed in the Heir anymore. But this day would mark the death of a mere human, and the birth of a vampire the likes of which the universe had never seen.

On the peak of a jagged mountain on the blue planet, Major Damien Morningstar sat heavily against the rock, gazing out at what he knew would be his final sunrise.

He looked down at his torso. The wounds were catastrophic, leaking dark crimson onto the dirt. Yet, if given the choice to rewrite the last twenty-four hours, he knew he would make the exact same decision.

Not because he was a good person. Far from it. In the vocabulary of modern civilization, he was at best lawful evil, or perhaps neutral evil. He lived by a strict, uncompromising set of internal laws. Chief among them: he did not tolerate child abusers of any kind.

His mercenary unit's mission had been simple: infiltrate the compound, terminate a warlord who took pleasure in the suffering of innocents, and extract the captive children. They had executed the target and completed the objective flawlessly, but the intelligence reports had been fatally flawed. The base possessed a hidden vanguard—a dozen fiercely loyal, heavily armed officers determined to avenge their dead leader.

With the extraction transport still minutes away, someone had to stay behind to hold the choke point. Damien had ordered his squad to move, volunteering to buy precious time so his mercenary companions and the children could evacuate safely.

Down the corridor, the heavy thud of tactical boots echoed. They were coming.

Damien raised his sidearm, aligning his sights with the reinforced door. He had exactly one bullet left.

As the shadows lengthened, a few stray thoughts drifted through his fading mind. He didn't fear death, but he did have a few distinct regrets. He regretted never finishing his favorite web novels. He regretted leaving behind hundreds of unresolved save files across various world-building strategy games—especially the newly released Europa Universalis 5, a title he had held exceptionally high hopes for. He thought of his open-world RPG campaigns in Skyrim, where, ironically, his final character build had been a powerful Vampire Lord.

The door burst open. Damien pulled the trigger, firing his last bullet into the oncoming vanguard.

As his breath rattled out of his lungs and the world turned to absolute black, he closed his eyes for what he believed would be eternity. He could have never imagined—never truly believed—that he would be opening them again so incredibly soon.
