The walls of the city rose high above the plain, shining like a loan island amidst a sea of freshly plowed land. It was like walking up to a grand castle, though the stone structures were still rudimentary.
Like something that belonged in the desert, the sandy facade glinted in the sunlight. Dots of activity showed how bustling the town was and walking up to it might have been intimidating if I hadn't been from the modern world.
At the entrance of the city guards were stationed, checking everyone and their goods. An entry fee was required and everyone had to register.
Someone in front of us was trying to smuggle in an extra person and the reaction was immediate and brutal. Spears came out and with a final gurgle, the person breathed his last. The stowaway met the same fate.
