Chapter 16 - A place to breathe

Evening settled over Sereneth.

A gentle chill drifted through the quiet village as the last light of the sun faded behind distant hills. Lanterns began to glow softly along the paths, and the calm air carried the peaceful rhythm of a place untouched by chaos.

But the two figures approaching the shrine at the edge of the village carried none of that peace with them.

Vyvian and Faye walked slowly along the stone path.

Their clothes were stained with dirt and dried blood. Their steps were heavy, exhausted not only from the long journey but from something far deeper, something that could not be healed by rest alone.

Their village was gone.

Without wasting any time, they approached the shrine gates.

Vyvian raised his voice weakly.

"Rem… Elder Seriyah…"

For a moment, only silence answered them.

Then hurried footsteps echoed from inside.

"Coming!"

The wooden doors slid open as Rem rushed toward the entrance.

The moment he saw them, his expression changed.

"You guys? You're here already?" Rem said, stopping in front of them.

His smile quickly faded as he looked closer.

"…Why do you both look like that?" His voice grew worried. "Did something happen?"

Vyvian opened his mouth, but the words felt heavy in his throat.

"Our village…" he began slowly.

His voice cracked slightly.

"…and its people."

A lump formed in his throat.

"…all of them are gone."

Faye stood beside him silently.

Her head was lowered, her eyes fixed on the ground. She said nothing, as if speaking would shatter the fragile control she still held over herself.

Rem's eyes widened.

"What…?"

His voice trembled.

"How? What happened?"

Vyvian shook his head faintly.

"I… don't want to talk about it right now."

He exhaled slowly.

"We're exhausted. Can we stay here… for a while?"

Rem didn't hesitate.

"Of course," he said quickly. "Come inside. I'll call Grandpa."

He guided them into the shrine.

A short time later, Elder Seriyah joined them inside the main hall.

The old man listened quietly as Vyvian explained what had happened.

The destruction.

The monster.

The massacre.

The room grew heavy with silence.

"So… a winged creature attacked the village," Elder Seriyah said slowly.

Vyvian nodded.

"It slaughtered everyone," he replied quietly. "We were too late."

Rem clenched his fists.

"And it just… left?" he asked.

"Yes."

Vyvian's gaze dropped.

"It said it was already full."

Silence fell again.

Elder Seriyah closed his eyes briefly before speaking.

"You have both suffered something no one should ever witness," he said gently.

Then he looked at them with warmth.

"You are both like grandchildren to me."

"You may stay here for as long as you need."

Rem glanced at them reassuringly.

Elder Seriyah continued.

"And while you stay here, I will train all three of you."

He stood up slowly.

"But first… you two should bathe and rest."

He gave a small smile.

"Dinner will be ready soon."

For the first time since arriving, a faint smile appeared on Vyvian's face.

It was small and fragile.

His eyes, however, shimmered with unshed tears.

"I'll… go outside for a bit," he said quietly.

He glanced at Faye.

"You should go wash first."

Without waiting for a response, Vyvian stepped outside the shrine.

Faye remained standing where she was.

Her body felt heavy.

As if every ounce of strength had been drained from her.

She couldn't move.

Rem noticed.

"Faye?" he said gently. "You should go freshen up."

She didn't respond.

Her eyes looked distant.

Rem stepped closer and saw the faint trembling in her hands.

Understanding dawned on his face.

Without saying anything, he wrapped his arms around her in a gentle hug.

"It's going to be okay," he said softly.

His voice carried no false promises.

Just quiet comfort.

After a moment, he stepped back.

"I'll help Grandpa with dinner."

Then he walked away.

Outside, the night sky stretched wide above Sereneth.

For the first time in days, the clouds had cleared.

Thousands of stars shimmered across the dark sky like scattered silver.

Vyvian lay on the grass near the shrine.

His hands rested behind his head.

His eyes stared upward.

He counted the stars.

One.

Two.

Three.

He kept counting.

Mindlessly.

Even after everything that had happened…

Even after losing his entire world…

No tears came.

His heart had gone silent.

Numb.

As if something inside him had frozen completely.

Later that night, the three of them gathered for dinner.

Warm food filled the small wooden table.

But the atmosphere remained quiet.

Then suddenly—

"Elder."

Vyvian's voice broke the silence.

Everyone looked at him.

"Train me."

His eyes were calm, but something dark lingered behind them.

"Train me enough so that I can hunt that monster down."

Rem and Faye both stared at him.

Elder Seriyah studied Vyvian carefully.

"I will train you," the elder said calmly.

"But understand this."

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"The path of revenge rarely leads back home."

"There is a high chance you may die before achieving it."

"Rage is not the best guide for one's soul."

Vyvian's expression did not change.

"I don't care."

His voice was firm.

Then Rem spoke.

"I'm going too."

Everyone turned toward him.

Elder Seriyah looked surprised.

"Rem—"

"I'm not asking, Grandpa."

His voice was steady.

Silence filled the room.

Then the old man sighed softly.

"…Very well."

He nodded slowly.

"But you must both be careful."

Vyvian then looked toward Faye.

"What about you?"

Faye's hands tightened slightly.

Her voice came out weak.

"…I'll go."

And so, time began to move again.

Days turned into weeks.

Weeks turned into months.

Under the guidance of Elder Seriyah, the three of them trained relentlessly within the shrine grounds.

They honed their Qi.

Mastered their transformations.

And pushed their bodies far beyond their limits.

Five months passed.

Under the patient guidance of Elder Seriyah, the three of them pushed their bodies and souls to their limits.

Training at the shrine was relentless.

At dawn they practiced control over their Qi, learning to guide its flow through every vein and muscle. By midday they sparred endlessly, testing their transformations against one another. And by night they meditated beneath the silent sky, forcing their spirits to remain steady even when exhaustion threatened to break them.

Slowly, their power began to change.

Vyvian, Faye, and Rem could now transform while fully fusing their elements with their beast forms. Their control over Qi had grown far beyond what they once believed possible.

The wild energy that once surged uncontrollably within them had become something sharper.

More refined.

They could now alter the nature of their Qi itself, bending it toward Order or letting it descend into Chaos, depending on the battle before them.

What once felt like distant concepts had now become techniques they could wield.

Yet Elder Seriyah constantly reminded them of one thing.

"Power without balance is destruction."

Even so, the fire inside their hearts never faded.

The memory of Rivera Village remained.

The screams.

The blood.

The monster that had walked away without consequence.

One quiet evening, as the sun dipped beyond the hills of Sereneth, the three stood together at the shrine gates.

Vyvian and Faye were no longer the broken survivors who had stumbled into the village months ago.

Their bodies had grown stronger.

Their Qi had deepened.

And their resolve had hardened.

They were ready to leave.

Ready to begin the long journey ahead.

A journey driven by revenge.

And perhaps, by something even greater.

For somewhere in this vast world, the truth behind that monster still waited to be uncovered.

But the path toward truth is rarely kind.

And the deeper one digs into the foundations of the world…

the darker those truths become.

Little did they know

the answers they sought would carry consequences far beyond their imagination.

Because waiting in the shadows of the world was not just one hidden secret…

but an incomprehensible truth that would one day shatter everything they believed about their world.
