Without paying attention to the crowd that had fallen into deep thought, Ash continued his explanation.
Though he was ostensibly teaching everyone present, he was also using the opportunity to organize and refine his own understanding of Pokémon training.
"Once you've understood the fundamental principle that there are no weak Pokémon and that every Pokémon possesses limitless potential, then when it comes to training, I personally like to approach things from two perspectives."
"The first is a Pokémon's Ability."
"The second is the base stat distribution of its final evolved form."
"If a Pokémon possesses an exceptionally powerful Ability, then we can build its entire battle style around that Ability—constructing its moveset, training methods, and combat strategy accordingly."
"I believe everyone here is fairly familiar with my Greninja."
"As the final evolution of Froakie, the Water-type starter from Kalos, Greninja has a fairly balanced stat distribution. However, its true strength lies in its Ability—Protean."
"Because of that, my training focus for Greninja has always been centered around developing and maximizing the potential of Protean. Improving its stats is secondary."
"Of course, there are exceptions."
"Take the Kanto starters' Abilities, for example: Blaze, Torrent, and Overgrow."
"These Abilities only activate when a Pokémon's HP falls to extremely low levels."
"They're incredibly powerful and can even allow a Pokémon to pull off a miraculous comeback from the brink of defeat."
"However, because they require the user to be heavily injured, they aren't suitable as the core foundation of a training system."
"After all, during battle, our goal should always be to keep our Pokémon healthy and combat-ready whenever possible."
"At most, these Abilities can be paired with a move like Reversal or a high-damage same-type attack to create a powerful finishing blow."
"So when training Pokémon like Venusaur, Blastoise, or Charizard, it's generally more appropriate to focus on their stat distributions rather than their Abilities."
Ash naturally used familiar examples as he explained.
"Venusaur has very balanced overall stats, but its Special Attack and Special Defense are particularly impressive."
"Additionally, Grass-type Pokémon are naturally excellent at recovery and battlefield control."
"So we can focus on strengthening its Special Attack and Special Defense while equipping moves that increase survivability, restore HP, and control the battlefield."
"Whether you choose a bulky bruiser build, a control-focused build, a recovery-focused build, or a balanced approach, all are viable."
"Blastoise is similarly balanced, but its defensive stats are especially outstanding."
"Combined with the naturally high durability and recovery capabilities common among Water-types, Blastoise is perfect for a counterattacking strategy."
"It can absorb damage first, wear down the opponent's confidence, and then launch a devastating counteroffensive."
"As for Charizard, its stats are also fairly balanced, but its Special Attack and Speed stand out significantly."
"It also possesses the ability to fly, and Fire-type Pokémon are famous for their explosive Special Attack damage."
"Because of that, Charizard is naturally suited to a ranged special-attacker role."
"However, unlike most bird Pokémon whose combat effectiveness drops dramatically if their wings are injured, Charizard still possesses formidable physical attack power even when grounded."
"So when training Charizard, I prefer to focus primarily on ranged special attacks while retaining strong melee physical capabilities as a secondary option."
"That way it can switch combat styles according to the situation."
After finishing his examples using Greninja and the Kanto starters, Ash turned back to the young trainer.
"So, what Ability does your Muk have?"
"Would you mind telling me?"
"Of course not." The boy nodded eagerly.
"My Muk's Ability is Stench."
"Stench, huh?"
Ash nodded thoughtfully.
"Pokémon with the Stench Ability have a chance to make opponents flinch whenever they successfully deal damage."
"It's actually quite a solid offensive Ability that provides a built-in control effect."
"However, while Stench is attack-oriented, it doesn't offer much room for deeper development."
"The flinch chance activates naturally when attacking."
"There aren't many advanced mechanics to exploit."
"So rather than focusing on the Ability itself, I'd recommend placing greater emphasis on stat development."
Ash continued.
"Muk's base stat total is 500, which is actually quite respectable among Poison-type Pokémon."
"Let's take a look."
HP: 105
Attack: 105
Defense: 75
Special Attack: 65
Special Defense: 100
Speed: 50
"Both its HP, Attack, and Special Defense exceed one hundred."
"However, Muk is very slow."
"And among the Poison-type moves it can learn, as well as its overall movepool, most offensive options lean toward Special Attack."
"Because of that, among its standout stats, Attack can be treated as a secondary focus."
"Regular training is enough. It doesn't require special investment."
"Instead, HP and Special Defense should become the primary training targets."
"Poison-type moves generally aren't known for explosive burst damage."
"Their strength lies in poisoning opponents and slowly draining their health over time."
"Muk is a pure Poison-type Pokémon."
"It possesses excellent HP and Special Defense, while suffering from low mobility."
"So its optimal development path is actually very obvious."
"A Poison-type tank."
The surrounding crowd listened intently.
Many members had originally gathered just to see Ash in person, but now they found themselves completely absorbed by his training lecture.
"Focus on strengthening its HP and Special Defense."
"Teach it moves such as Harden, Acid Armor, Minimize, and Rest."
"These moves can improve its physical defense, evasion, and recovery capabilities."
"The overall goal is simple."
"Maximize Muk's survivability."
"During battle, poison the opponent first."
"Better yet, badly poison them."
"Then rely on Muk's incredible durability to stall for time."
"As the poison continuously chips away at the opponent's health, they'll eventually collapse without Muk needing to deliver a finishing blow."
"Poison-type attacks don't possess exceptional burst damage."
"But their sustained damage is terrifying."
"The traditional and orthodox Poison-type battle style has always revolved around poisoning opponents and dragging battles out."
"Because of that, survivability is the most important requirement."
"Compared to many other Poison-types, Muk is naturally suited for a tank role."
"It already possesses outstanding durability from birth."
"In my opinion, it's an excellent Poison-type Pokémon with tremendous training potential."
Ash smiled.
"To be honest, if I didn't already have so many Pokémon to train, I'd probably consider catching a Muk myself someday."
The boy's eyes immediately lit up.
His face was practically glowing with happiness.
If even Ash thought Muk was worth training, then all the doubts and criticisms he'd endured suddenly seemed insignificant.
"So, Mr. Ash..."
The boy carefully summarized.
"Going forward, I should focus on training Muk's HP, Defense, and Special Defense."
"I should develop it into a tank-oriented Pokémon and maximize its survivability in battle."
"Is that right?"
"Exactly."
Ash nodded approvingly.
"If you build Muk as a tank, it won't lack damage."
"After all, poison continuously drains an opponent's HP by percentage."
"As long as Muk survives long enough, the damage will accumulate naturally."
"If your opponent can't knock Muk out quickly, then sooner or later they'll be the one who falls."
Ash looked at the young trainer and spoke with confidence.
"In short, Poison-type Pokémon are powerful."
"Muk is powerful."
"You need to believe in Muk."
"And you need to believe in yourself."
"I think one day, both you and Muk will shine brilliantly on the stage of the Pokémon League Conference."
The boy's eyes became moist with excitement.
"Mm!"
"Thank you, Mr. Ash!"
"Both Muk and I will work hard!"
After hearing Ash's analysis, guidance, and encouragement, the path forward suddenly became clear.
The confusion and uncertainty that had weighed on his heart disappeared.
In their place came confidence.
Confidence in Muk.
Confidence in himself.
And confidence in the future they would build together.
