Chapter 2 - TRIALS OF THE MOONFANG

šŸŒ• CHAPTER 2 — TRIALS OF THE MOONFANG

Dawn crept into the forest like a timid guest, soft beams of pale gold filtering through the trees and spilling across the cave floor. Elara woke to the low rumble of Kael's breathing beside her — steady, controlled, almost rhythmic, like something ancient trying desperately to remain calm.

For a moment, she simply watched him.

Half-wolf, half-man, entirely impossible.

His silhouette was massive in the dim light, every muscle tense even in rest. Fur rippled along his arms and shoulders in patches, slowly receding as he shifted back toward his human form. She didn't look away when the last remnants of his transformation faded. She couldn't.

Kael, now fully human again, sat with his back against the cave wall. His dark hair fell over one eye, damp with dew. The lines of exhaustion etched across his face made him look younger — and somehow more dangerous.

"You didn't sleep," she said quietly.

He opened his eyes. Golden, sharp, but softening at the sight of her.

"I don't sleep," he replied. "Not when hunters are tracking us."

Elara pulled her shawl around her shoulders. "Will they find this cave?"

"No." He tilted his head. "The forest hid us last night. The bond's awakening confuses humans… blinds them."

She blinked. "It blinds them?"

Kael nodded. "Not permanently. But while your mark glows, the forest bends to it. Protects it."

Elara looked down at her wrist. The mark had dimmed to a faint shimmer — like moonlight trapped beneath her skin.

"Why me?" she whispered, unable to stop the question anymore.

He didn't answer immediately. His eyes flicked to the mark. Something like fear — or reverence — glimmered there.

Finally he said, "Because the Moon chooses who will change fate. And fate rarely chooses the strong. It chooses the ones who don't know they already are."

Her breath hitched.

Kael rose to his feet with fluid grace. "We need to move. The deeper we go, the stronger the bond becomes."

Elara stood as well. "Deeper… where?"

His jaw tightened.

"To the heart of the Moonfang forest."

A chill raced through her. "Is it dangerous?"

Kael didn't smile. "It's worse than dangerous."

He extended a hand.

"It's alive."

The Path of Silver Roots

They set out just as the sun climbed higher, cutting through the morning haze. Kael led her along a narrow path barely visible between the undergrowth. Every now and then, she felt branches shift above her — not from wind, but from intention. The forest whispered, watching.

Kael moved with practiced ease. "Step where I step," he instructed without turning around. "This place has a long memory. It tolerates me. It does not yet understand you."

Elara swallowed hard and matched his footsteps. She could feel something under the earth — a pulse, faint but steady.

"Is that… the forest's heartbeat?" she whispered.

Kael stopped for a moment.

"No," he said. "It's yours. The bond echoes through the trees."

Elara stared at him. "How?"

"The Moonfang bond ties more than souls. It ties life. Land. Breath." His gaze found hers. "You're changing the forest just by being here."

Her knees nearly buckled.

"Kael… what am I becoming?"

He stepped closer, his voice low. "You're becoming what fate needs. That is all."

It wasn't an answer. Not really. But there was no time to push for more — because suddenly, the forest opened into a clearing.

And everything changed.

The First Trial

Elara froze.

An enormous tree towered in the center of the clearing — its bark silver, its roots black and thick like veins. Light shimmered across it as though moonlight lived inside the trunk. The air around it was colder, sharper, alive with strange energy.

Kael inhaled slowly. "The Silverroot. First guardian of the Moonfang path."

Elara felt the mark on her wrist heat up, glowing faintly. "Guardian?"

Kael nodded. "Nothing passes this tree without being tested."

Before she could ask tested how, the ground vibrated beneath them. The roots of the tree curled upward, twisting and rising like serpents. Elara stumbled back, but Kael caught her wrist.

"Don't run," he warned, voice like iron.

The roots formed a shape — a vague humanoid figure with glowing cracks of silver running through its body. It stood nearly twice Kael's height, eyeless but somehow staring directly at her.

Elara's breath trembled. "Kael—"

"It reacts to you," he muttered. "To your mark."

The creature stepped forward, and the forest went silent.

Every leaf, every whisper of wind, every distant bird stopped moving as if holding its breath. The creature lifted an arm — slowly, deliberately — and extended a single root-like finger toward Elara.

"Kael…" she whispered again, shaking.

He didn't hesitate. He stepped in front of her.

Immediately, the root-beast slammed its arm into the ground with a thunderous crack.

Kael was thrown backward, crashing into a tree. "Stay behind me!" he snarled.

Elara dropped to her knees beside him. "What does it want?"

"You," Kael rasped, pushing himself up. "It tests the chosen. If you fail—"

His jaw clenched.

"It kills you."

The Bond Awakens Again

Elara's entire body shook. She looked at the enormous creature. It wasn't attacking now. It simply waited. Expecting her.

"Kael, I can't fight that! I'm not a warrior!"

He grabbed her shoulders. His touch steadied her trembling. His eyes locked on hers — fierce, golden, burning with something she hadn't seen before.

"Yes, you are."

He pulled her closer.

"You survived the hunters."

"You healed a dying creature without knowing what he was."

"You carry the Moon's mark."

His forehead almost touched hers. His voice lowered to a soft, trembling growl.

"You are braver than you think. Braver than anyone I've known."

Her breath caught. The bond pulsed between them, strong enough to warm the air.

"Kael—"

"No," he said firmly. "Listen."

He guided her hand to her wrist, where the mark glowed brighter than ever. The forest responded to the light — leaves rustling, roots shifting, light gathering.

"When you feel afraid… focus on the bond. On me. I will not let you fall."

The words sunk deep, like roots anchoring themselves into her heart.

Elara rose slowly to her feet. She stepped toward the guardian, every heartbeat echoing through the clearing.

The creature leaned forward.

Her mark blazed.

The forest held its breath.

And Kael whispered from behind her:

"Show it who you are."

The world narrowed to a single moment.

Elara stood alone before the towering guardian, her breath shallow, her pulse loud enough to drown out every other sound. The glowing mark on her wrist burned brighter, spreading silver light up her arm like veins of moonfire.

The creature did not attack.

It waited.

As if judging her.

As if listening.

Elara swallowed hard. Her legs trembled, but she didn't step back. Not this time.

Focus on the bond… on me.

Kael's voice echoed in her mind, steady and grounding. She clung to it like an anchor in a storm. Slowly, she closed her eyes.

At first, there was only darkness.

Then—

A pulse.

Soft. Deep. Ancient.

It wasn't just her heartbeat. It was something else… something older than her, older than the forest, older than fear itself.

The Moon.

Elara gasped, her eyes flying open. The world around her had changed. The air shimmered, silver threads weaving through the clearing like invisible currents. The massive tree glowed brighter, its roots pulsing in time with her mark.

The guardian stepped forward again.

But this time…

She didn't feel afraid.

The Trial Begins

The creature raised both arms, and the ground split beneath Elara's feet. Roots surged upward, twisting like living chains, lunging toward her.

She stumbled back—but didn't run.

"I won't run," she whispered, her voice shaking but firm.

The roots wrapped around her wrists—

—and stopped.

The moment they touched her skin, the silver mark flared. Light exploded outward, racing along the roots like lightning. The creature froze, its entire form trembling as if struck by something unseen.

Elara stared at her glowing hands. "I… I did that?"

Behind her, Kael watched in stunned silence. His golden eyes widened, something like awe flickering through them.

"The bond…" he breathed. "It's responding to her will…"

The guardian pulled back, as if recoiling. But then its body shifted again, reshaping, growing larger, more monstrous. The test wasn't over.

A deep, echoing sound filled the clearing — not quite a voice, but something close.

A question.

Not spoken… but felt.

Elara clutched her chest. Her mind flooded with images:

— A forest burning

— Wolves howling in pain

— Blood staining silver snow

— A lone figure standing beneath a red moon

Kael.

His past.

His pain.

Her breath caught. "This is… your memory…"

The guardian stepped closer again.

The meaning became clear.

It wasn't testing her strength.

It was testing her heart.

Choice of the Moon

The vision deepened. Elara could feel it now — the grief, the rage, the loneliness that clung to Kael like a shadow. The destruction of the Moonfang Clan wasn't just a story. It was a wound that had never healed.

The guardian's silent question pressed harder:

Would you turn away from the beast… or stand beside it?

Tears welled in Elara's eyes.

She turned her head slowly, looking back at Kael.

He stood at the edge of the clearing, tense, unmoving. For once, the fearless beastman looked uncertain. Vulnerable.

Afraid.

Not of the creature—

But of her answer.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"You've been alone for so long…" she whispered.

The bond pulsed.

Her mark burned.

And then she stepped forward.

"I won't turn away."

The words came out soft—but unwavering.

"I don't care what you are… human or beast… cursed or broken…"

Her voice trembled, but she kept going.

"You protected me. You trusted me. And I—"

Her breath hitched.

"I choose you too."

The Awakening

The moment the words left her lips—

Everything erupted.

The silver light from her mark burst outward in a blinding wave, racing through the clearing, climbing the massive tree, flooding the roots, the air, the sky itself.

The guardian froze completely.

Then slowly…

It bowed.

The ground stilled. The roots sank back into the earth. The air softened, warm and quiet once more.

Elara's knees buckled.

Before she could fall, strong arms caught her.

Kael.

His grip was firm, almost desperate, as if grounding himself in the reality that she was still there.

"You…" His voice was low, shaken. "You passed the trial."

Elara looked up at him, her vision slightly blurred. "Did I?"

His golden eyes searched her face, something intense and unspoken flickering within them.

"You did more than that," he said quietly. "You awakened it."

"The bond?"

He nodded slowly. "No one has done that in centuries."

Her heart skipped. "What does that mean?"

Kael hesitated. For once, he didn't have an immediate answer.

"It means…" he said finally, "you're not just chosen."

His hand tightened slightly around hers.

"You're something far more dangerous."

After the Trial

The clearing felt different now. Calmer. As if the forest itself had accepted her.

Elara leaned against Kael slightly, still catching her breath. "I saw things… your memories."

His body stiffened.

"You weren't meant to see that," he said, voice low.

"I'm glad I did," she replied softly.

He looked at her, surprised.

"You're not what they say you are," she continued. "You're not just a beast."

A flicker of something crossed his face — pain, maybe… or something softer.

"You don't know what I've done," he murmured.

"Then tell me," she said gently.

He looked away. "Not yet."

Silence settled between them, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was… fragile. Growing.

Then Kael exhaled slowly. "We need to keep moving. This was only the first trial. There will be more."

Elara nodded. "I'll be ready."

He studied her for a moment, then gave a faint, almost reluctant smile.

"I believe you will."

A New Connection

As they stepped out of the clearing, something had changed.

Elara felt it instantly.

The pull between them was stronger now — not overwhelming, but constant. Like a thread tying her to him, guiding her steps, syncing her heartbeat with his.

Kael felt it too.

He glanced at her more often now. Stayed closer than before. His movements, once purely protective, carried something else… something quieter. Warmer.

At one point, their hands brushed.

Neither pulled away immediately.

The contact sent a spark through her, soft but undeniable.

Kael's voice dropped slightly. "The bond will continue to grow."

Elara looked at him. "Does that scare you?"

He didn't answer right away.

"…Yes," he admitted.

She blinked. "Why?"

His gaze met hers, intense and unguarded.

"Because if it breaks…"

He didn't finish.

He didn't need to.

Elara understood.

And for the first time—

She reached for his hand on purpose.

The deeper they went, the quieter the forest became.

Not peaceful quiet—

But watchful.

Elara could feel it now in a way she hadn't before. Every step she took sent faint ripples through the ground, as though the forest recognized her presence. The bond had changed something. Not just within her… but around her.

Her hand was still in Kael's.

She hadn't meant to keep holding it for so long. But neither had he pulled away.

And somehow… it felt natural.

Safe.

Kael's voice broke the silence. "We're close."

"Close to what?" she asked softly.

"The second threshold."

Elara's stomach tightened. "Another trial?"

"Yes." His grip on her hand tightened just slightly. "But this one… is different."

She glanced at him. "Different how?"

He didn't look at her this time. His gaze stayed fixed ahead, sharp and guarded.

"This one won't test your heart," he said.

A pause.

"It will test your control."

The Hollow of Echoes

They stepped into a narrow passage between two massive stone formations, twisted with roots and time. The air here was colder, heavier. The light dimmed, even though the sun had not yet set.

Elara shivered. "I don't like this place."

"You're not supposed to," Kael replied. "This is where the Moonfang lost control."

Her breath caught. "What do you mean?"

He finally looked at her, and there was something dark in his eyes now. Something haunted.

"This is where the curse first consumed us."

The words settled heavily between them.

They moved forward anyway.

The passage opened into a wide hollow — a sunken clearing surrounded by jagged stone and ancient trees. The ground was cracked, as if something had torn it apart long ago.

Elara felt it immediately.

The bond.

It pulsed wildly now, stronger than before — unstable.

Her hand tightened in Kael's. "Something's wrong…"

"I know," he said quietly. "Stay close."

But it was already too late.

The Echo Awakens

A sound rippled through the hollow.

Not a growl.

Not a voice.

Something in between.

Elara turned sharply—and froze.

A figure stood at the far end of the hollow.

It looked like a wolf.

But not like Kael.

This one was… wrong.

Its body flickered between forms, shifting uncontrollably between human and beast. Its eyes burned a deep, violent red. Its movements were jagged, unnatural — like something broken trying to remember how to live.

Elara's breath trembled. "Kael…"

His body went completely still.

"No…" he whispered.

"What is that?"

His voice dropped, filled with something raw.

"An Echo."

The creature stepped forward. The ground cracked beneath its feet.

"It's what remains… of those who lost themselves to the curse."

Elara felt a chill crawl up her spine. "You mean—"

"Yes." Kael's jaw clenched. "It was once one of us."

The Echo let out a distorted howl. The sound tore through the hollow, shaking the trees, vibrating through Elara's bones.

Her mark flared painfully.

She cried out, clutching her wrist.

"It's reacting to you," Kael said sharply. "Don't let it overwhelm you!"

But the bond wasn't calm like before.

It was wild.

Chaotic.

Loss of Control

The Echo lunged.

Kael moved instantly, pushing Elara behind him as he shifted mid-motion. Bones cracked, fur spread, and in a heartbeat the massive wolf stood between her and the creature.

They collided with a thunderous impact.

Elara stumbled back, her vision spinning. The bond surged violently, reacting to Kael's transformation, to the Echo's presence, to the unstable energy flooding the hollow.

She couldn't breathe.

"Kael—!"

The Echo struck again, claws slashing. Kael blocked it, but the force sent him skidding across the ground.

He growled, low and furious.

But the Echo didn't fight like a creature.

It fought like madness.

Unpredictable. Relentless.

Elara's chest tightened.

This is what happens when the curse wins…

Her thoughts spiraled. The bond responded—

Too strongly.

Silver light burst from her mark again, but this time it wasn't controlled. It lashed outward like wild fire, striking the ground, the trees, even Kael.

"Stop!" Kael shouted, his voice strained. "Elara, you have to control it!"

"I can't!" she cried, panic rising. "It's too much—!"

The energy surged again, stronger this time.

The Echo screamed, but not in pain — in recognition.

It turned toward her.

And smiled.

The Turning Point

Everything slowed.

The Echo ignored Kael now.

It was coming for her.

Because she was unstable.

Because she was becoming like it.

"No…" Elara whispered, backing away. "No, that's not me…"

But the bond didn't listen. It pulsed harder, faster, out of rhythm.

Fear fed it.

Doubt fed it.

The Echo lunged.

Kael roared, trying to intercept, but he was too far.

"Elara—!"

Time snapped back into place.

And in that moment—

She remembered his voice.

Focus on the bond… on me.

Her breath steadied.

Her fear didn't disappear—

But she stopped running from it.

Instead…

She faced it.

"I'm not you," she said, her voice shaking but firm.

The mark flared again—

But this time…

It didn't lash out.

It gathered.

Condensed.

Controlled.

Silver light formed around her like a shield, steady and bright.

The Echo slammed into it—

—and was thrown back.

Control

The clearing went still.

Elara stood there, breathing hard, her entire body trembling—but the light around her remained stable.

Kael stared.

Not in fear.

Not even in shock.

But something deeper.

Pride.

"You did it…" he said quietly.

The Echo rose again, weaker now, flickering violently.

Kael stepped forward, his golden eyes blazing.

"This ends now."

He lunged—

And this time, the fight was quick.

Precise.

Final.

The Echo dissolved into fragments of silver and shadow, scattering into the air like dust.

Silence fell.

Aftermath

Kael turned back to her immediately, shifting back into human form as he approached.

"Elara," he said, reaching her in seconds. "Are you hurt?"

She shook her head weakly. "I… I think I'm okay…"

Her knees gave out.

He caught her again.

This time… he didn't let go.

"You controlled it," he said, his voice softer now. "Do you understand what that means?"

She looked up at him, still shaken. "Not really…"

"It means," he said slowly, "you're not just surviving the bond."

His hand tightened around hers, their marks faintly glowing together.

"You're mastering it."

Her heart skipped.

"And what happens if I don't?" she asked quietly.

Kael's expression darkened.

"Then you become what we just fought."

Silence.

Heavy. Real.

But then—

He lifted her chin gently.

"But you won't," he said.

She blinked. "How do you know?"

His golden eyes softened, just slightly.

"Because you're not alone."

The bond pulsed again—

But this time…

It felt steady.

Warm.

Alive.

The Hollow of Echoes was silent once more.

The strange energy that had filled the clearing slowly faded, leaving only the whisper of leaves overhead and the distant song of water somewhere deeper in the forest.

Elara sat on a fallen log while Kael knelt nearby, checking the small cuts on her hands.

"You don't have to do that," she said softly.

"I do."

His answer came immediately.

Elara blinked.

Kael carefully wrapped a strip of cloth around her palm.

"You were hurt because of me."

"You were hurt too."

"I'm used to it."

His tone was calm, but something about those words made her chest ache.

Used to it.

Used to pain.

Used to fighting.

Used to being alone.

The realization settled heavily in her heart.

Kael finished tying the bandage and began to pull away.

Without thinking, Elara reached out and caught his wrist.

The movement surprised both of them.

For a moment neither spoke.

The forest seemed to hold its breath.

Slowly, Kael looked down at her hand resting on his arm.

His golden eyes lifted to meet hers.

"Elara..."

She swallowed.

"You always act like you're carrying everything by yourself."

Something flickered across his face.

Gone almost as quickly as it appeared.

"I am."

"No."

Her voice was quiet but firm.

"You don't have to."

The words hung between them.

Dangerous words.

Tender words.

Kael looked away first.

The Story of the Curse

As evening approached, they made camp beside a stream hidden among silver-leafed trees.

For the first time since meeting him, Elara saw Kael truly relax.

Only a little.

But enough.

A small fire crackled between them.

Orange sparks drifted toward the darkening sky.

For a while they simply sat together.

Then Elara finally asked the question that had been haunting her.

"What happened to your clan?"

Kael became very still.

The fire reflected in his golden eyes.

For several moments she thought he might refuse to answer.

Then he spoke.

"When I was a child, the Moonfang Clan ruled the northern forests."

His voice was low.

"Our people protected the ancient paths. Humans feared us, but many respected us."

Elara listened carefully.

"My father was Alpha."

A faint smile touched Kael's lips.

"He was strong. Stronger than anyone I have ever known."

The smile disappeared.

"Then the curse changed."

The fire popped loudly.

Kael stared into the flames.

"Before, the curse only affected our transformations."

His jaw tightened.

"But something happened."

"What?"

"No one knows."

The words were bitter.

"Some say dark magic. Some say betrayal. Some say the Moon abandoned us."

A shadow crossed his face.

"The curse began consuming minds."

Elara immediately thought of the Echo.

The red eyes.

The madness.

The loneliness.

"The strongest warriors fell first."

Kael nodded.

"Brothers attacked brothers."

His voice grew quieter.

"Mothers feared their children."

Elara's chest tightened.

"And eventually..."

He looked away.

"We destroyed ourselves."

Silence followed.

A painful silence.

Elara suddenly understood why his eyes sometimes looked so sad.

Why loneliness clung to him like a second shadow.

He hadn't merely lost his home.

He had lost everyone.

The Last Heir

"How did you survive?" Elara asked gently.

Kael laughed once.

A hollow sound.

"I barely did."

His gaze drifted upward toward the stars.

"When the clan fell, I was sent away."

"By who?"

"My mother."

The answer surprised her.

Kael's expression softened.

"She knew what was coming."

For the first time, Elara heard affection in his voice.

"She told me to run."

His eyes lowered.

"I never saw her again."

The fire suddenly seemed colder.

Elara moved closer without realizing it.

Not enough to touch him.

But enough.

Kael noticed.

His gaze lingered on her for a moment.

Then he looked away again.

"You shouldn't look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I'm someone worth saving."

The words struck her harder than she expected.

"Kael..."

"I'm serious."

His voice was rough now.

"You know what I am."

"Yes."

"You've seen what the curse can do."

"Yes."

"It could happen to me."

The admission sounded painful.

As though it was something he carried every day.

Something he feared every day.

Elara stared at him.

Then slowly shook her head.

"No."

Kael frowned.

"You don't know that."

"No," she said again. "I don't."

The firelight danced across her face.

"But I know you."

His eyes widened slightly.

She continued.

"You protect people."

"You care about others."

"You risk your life for strangers."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"And you're annoyingly stubborn."

For the first time all evening, Kael laughed.

A real laugh.

Short.

Quiet.

But real.

The sound made her smile grow.

And for a moment—

Just a moment—

The darkness around them seemed smaller.

The Warning

The moment didn't last.

Because suddenly Kael's expression changed.

Every trace of warmth vanished.

His body became rigid.

Alert.

Dangerous.

Elara noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Kael stood.

His eyes scanned the darkness beyond the trees.

"I can smell someone."

The air seemed to tighten.

Elara rose as well.

"A hunter?"

"No."

His voice was lower than she'd ever heard it.

"Worse."

A chill ran down her spine.

The forest had gone silent.

No birds.

No insects.

Nothing.

Then—

A distant howl echoed through the night.

Not like Kael's.

Not like any wolf she'd ever heard.

This howl sounded wrong.

Ancient.

Hungry.

Cruel.

Kael's face paled.

For the first time since she'd met him—

He looked afraid.

The Name No One Speaks

"Kael?"

He didn't answer immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on the darkness.

Finally he spoke.

One name.

Just one.

And it changed everything.

"Varkor."

The name seemed to make even the forest recoil.

Elara frowned.

"Who's Varkor?"

Kael's jaw tightened.

"The reason my clan fell."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

The distant howl echoed again.

Closer this time.

Kael's hands clenched into fists.

"He's the first Moonfang."

"The first?"

Kael nodded.

"The strongest."

The fire crackled violently.

"He was supposed to be our greatest protector."

His golden eyes darkened.

"Instead..."

A pause.

"He became our greatest monster."

Elara felt cold.

Very cold.

"The curse didn't destroy him."

Kael looked into the darkness.

"It obeyed him."

Silence.

Heavy.

Terrifying.

"And if he learns the Moon's bond has awakened..."

Kael turned toward her.

His expression was grim.

"He'll come for you."

The mark on her wrist suddenly pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

As if it had heard him.

As if something far away had heard him too.

The wind rose.

The trees shuddered.

And somewhere deep within the endless forest—

A pair of crimson eyes opened.

Watching.

Waiting.

Smiling.
