Chapter 24 - Aetherion unveiled

Morning light filtered softly through the tall crystal windows.

Princess Ayla stirred first, her body feeling lighter than it had in days no, longer than that.

The exhaustion from the battlefield, the grief, the chaos... it all felt distant now, like a fading echo.

Beside her, Ryker shifted and slowly sat up, rubbing the back of his neck.

For a moment, they both simply looked around taking in the unfamiliar room, the soft glow of the walls, the quiet hum of magic in the air.

Then

A soft knock.

The door opened, and two figures stepped inside.

A young man bowed slightly. "Good morning.

My name is Finn," he said warmly, gesturing to the girl beside him. "And this is my sister, Daisy. We've been asked to show you to your rooms."

Ayla and Ryker exchanged a glance before nodding.

They followed the siblings down a long, elegant hallway, the floors shimmering faintly beneath their feet. The air itself felt alive gentle, welcoming.

They stopped in front of two doors placed side by side.

Finn opened one. "This will be yours," he said to Ryker.

Daisy smiled, opening the other. "And this is yours, my lady."

Ayla stepped inside and paused.

The room was breathtaking.

Sunlight poured through wide windows, illuminating furniture carved from shimmering wood that seemed to glow softly. The bed looked impossibly soft, layered with pale silks.

For the first time in what felt like forever...

She felt safe.

After washing and eating, they both felt renewed stronger, steadier.

When they stepped back into the hallway, Eriol was already waiting.

"Good morning," she said, her calm gaze settling on them. "I trust you both rested well."

"We did," Ryker replied.

Ayla nodded softly.

Eriol smiled. "Good. Then come I want to show you Aetherion."

The moment they stepped outside, Ayla stopped.

The world before her was... unreal.

Buildings crafted from glowing wood and crystal stretched into the distance, reflecting sunlight like living glass. The streets were filled with people laughing, talking, alive in a way she had never seen before.

There was no fear.

No tension.

Only... peace.

Ryker let out a quiet breath. "This place..."

"Aetherion," Eriol said, "is not just a realm. It is magic itself, given form."

As they walked, Ayla noticed children laughing as flowers bloomed instantly at their fingertips. Others shaped light into small glowing creatures that danced in the air.

"Everyone can do this?" she asked quietly.

Eriol nodded. "Magic lives in everything here. It is not something you learn it is something you remember."

They passed through a vibrant marketplace filled with glowing potions, floating trinkets, and spell-bound artifacts.

A grand library stood nearby, its doors etched with ancient symbols.

Then, in the distance

A palace.

That they slept in.

Massive. Radiant. Alive with power.

Ayla glanced at Eriol. "Who rules Aetherion?"

Eriol smiled faintly.

"I do."

Ayla blinked in surprise. "You're... the queen?"

"I am," Eriol said simply. "And I have been for a very long time."

Ryker looked at her with new understanding. "Then this place reflects you."

Eriol didn't deny it.

They walked further, until the landscape shifted trees growing taller, the air warmer.

A cave stood ahead.

Eriol turned slightly. "Would you like to see something rare?"

Moments later, they stepped inside.

Ayla's breath caught.

Dragons.

Dozens of them massive, powerful, their scales shimmering like jewels in the dim light.

Ryker stepped forward instinctively, raising a hand.

One dragon turned its head slowly, golden eyes locking onto him.

He froze.

But it didn't attack.

It simply... watched him.

Studied him.

Eriol's voice was calm. "They sense strength. And truth."

Ryker slowly lowered his hand.

"They're... not just creatures, are they?"

"No," Eriol said. "They are beings of intelligence and memory. To speak with them, you must first understand them."

She stepped forward, speaking softly in an ancient tongue.

The dragon bowed... then turned and disappeared deeper into the cave.

By the time they returned to the palace, the sun had begun to soften.

Eriol led them into a quiet garden filled with glowing flowers and gentle flowing water.

"This is where I come to think," she said.

Ayla stepped forward, her fingers brushing a petal.

"Beautiful"she said

Ryker noticed but said nothing.

"What happens tomorrow?" he asked.

Eriol turned, her expression now serious.

"Tomorrow," she said, "your training begins."

Ayla's chest tightened slightly. "What if we're not ready?"

Eriol held her gaze.

"You don't have a choice anymore."

A pause.

Then, softer

"I will make sure you are."

Eriol left them there.

Silence settled but this time, it was peaceful.

Ayla exhaled slowly, looking around.

"It's beautiful," she whispered.

Ryker nodded. "Yeah."

Then he glanced at her.

"Feels like... a new beginning."

Ayla hesitated.

Then, gently

She reached for his hand.

"Then let's explore it."

Ryker smiled faintly, squeezing her hand.

"Lead the way."
