Chapter 97 - Chapter 97: Shadow Over The Academy

The sky above Aether Knights Academy was too calm.

Clear.

Bright.

Peaceful.

It should have felt welcoming.

It should have felt safe.

But as Lyra stepped through the spatial gate—

her chest tightened instantly.

"…Something's wrong."

The words left her before she could stop them.

Behind her, the rest of the Celestial Warriors emerged one by one, their presence distorting the air briefly before stabilizing.

The academy stretched out before them—vast white stone towers, floating training platforms, and streams of condensed aether flowing like rivers through the air.

Students moved across the grounds.

Training.

Talking.

Laughing.

Everything looked… normal.

But Lyra's flame stirred uneasily within her.

Not violently.

Not urgently.

But… cautiously.

Like something watching from the shadows.

---

They stood at the edge of the main courtyard.

No alarms.

No destruction.

No visible enemy.

"…This doesn't match the warning," Rafael said quietly, his gaze scanning the environment.

Serena narrowed her eyes slightly. "Either we're early… or we're already too late."

Orion stepped slightly closer to Lyra, his voice low. "…Can you feel it?"

Lyra didn't answer immediately.

She focused.

Extended her senses outward—

not just across the surface—

but deeper.

Through the aether currents.

Through the structure of the academy itself.

"…It's faint," she said finally.

"But it's here."

Kai cracked his knuckles lightly. "Good. I was starting to think we came for nothing."

Mia frowned. "Don't say that…"

Around them, students began to notice.

Whispers spread quickly.

"…That's them…"

"…The Celestial Warriors…"

"…Is that really Lyra…?"

Sofia shifted slightly, smiling faintly at the attention, while Nero remained calm and grounded beside her.

Emma's gaze moved constantly—silent, alert.

Kael positioned himself slightly forward, naturally taking a defensive stance.

Seraphina and Zane exchanged a brief glance.

Everyone felt it.

Even if they couldn't fully see it yet.

Something was wrong.

---

Lyra's gaze drifted across the academy.

Familiar.

And yet—

not.

"…I studied here once," she said quietly.

Orion glanced at her. "Before everything?"

She nodded.

"…Before Ignis fell."

Before she died.

Before she became… this.

Her fingers curled slightly at her side.

"…It felt different back then."

"Safer?" Orion asked.

Lyra hesitated.

"…Simpler."

A small pause followed.

Then—

"…I didn't know what I was yet."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"…Now I do."

But the certainty didn't bring comfort.

It brought weight.

Responsibility.

Expectation.

And something deeper—

fear.

Not of enemies.

But of herself.

Of what she might have to become next.

Orion stepped closer again.

Not touching her.

Just enough to ground her.

"You're still you."

Lyra let out a quiet breath.

"…I'm trying to be."

---

Her flame stirred again.

This time—

clearer.

More focused.

Lyra closed her eyes briefly.

Not to retreat—

but to listen.

Her control had changed since Ignis.

Her flame was no longer just reactive.

It could sense.

Differentiate.

Understand.

"…There are two energy sources," she said suddenly.

Serena's attention snapped fully onto her. "Two?"

Lyra nodded.

"One here…"

Her gaze shifted toward the academy's central tower.

"…And one far away."

Rafael's expression darkened. "…The Fairy Academy."

"…He's targeting both," Lyra confirmed.

Kai let out a low whistle. "Splitting power, huh… smart."

Serena shook her head slightly. "No. That means he already understands what he's looking for."

A silence followed.

Because that only meant one thing.

They weren't early.

They were already behind.

---

A sudden pulse ran through the ground.

Subtle.

But wrong.

Lyra's eyes snapped toward the central tower.

"…There."

Without waiting—

she moved.

A burst of golden light carried her forward, the others following instantly behind.

They crossed the courtyard in seconds, drawing more attention from the students as pressure began to rise in the air.

"…What's happening?"

"…Why does it feel like that?"

The closer they got—

the stronger it became.

A distortion.

Like space itself was slightly… misaligned.

They reached the base of the tower.

And stopped.

Because someone was already there.

A figure stood at the entrance.

Tall.

Still.

Wrapped in dark robes that seemed to absorb the surrounding light rather than reflect it.

His face was hidden.

But his presence—

was undeniable.

"…So," the figure spoke calmly.

"…you arrived faster than expected."

Kai stepped forward immediately. "Yeah, and you're standing exactly where you shouldn't be."

The figure didn't move.

Didn't react.

"…You misunderstand," he said quietly.

"I'm not here to fight you."

Lyra stepped forward.

Her flame flickered once—

not aggressively.

But alert.

"…Then why are you here?"

A pause.

Then—

"To claim what was never meant to remain hidden."

The air shifted.

Dark aether rippled outward slightly.

Not attacking—

just revealing itself.

Serena's voice dropped. "…That's not normal aether."

Rafael nodded slowly. "…It's distorted… controlled differently…"

Lyra's gaze sharpened.

"…You're the Dark Magician."

The figure inclined his head slightly.

"…Titles are irrelevant."

Another pulse ran through the tower behind him.

Stronger this time.

"…But yes," he said softly.

"I suppose that is what I am called."

---

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Students nearby began backing away.

Instructors appeared in the distance, alerted by the sudden energy spike.

"…We should contain this," Kael said firmly.

Mia nodded. "Too many people here…"

Kai smirked slightly. "Or we just end it fast."

Serena stepped forward slightly. "No. Not yet."

Her eyes remained locked on the Dark Magician.

"…He's not here for a direct confrontation."

Orion's voice was quiet beside Lyra. "…He's stalling."

Lyra realized it at the same moment.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"…The second source."

Rafael's expression darkened immediately. "…Fairy Academy."

The Dark Magician smiled faintly beneath the shadows of his hood.

"…Exactly."

---

Lyra's heart tightened.

"He's splitting our attention…"

Serena nodded sharply. "And forcing a decision."

Kai clicked his tongue. "Classic."

Mia looked between them, worried. "We can't just leave this place unprotected…"

Nero finally spoke, his voice steady. "Then we don't."

Silence followed.

Because the answer was obvious.

They had to split.

Again.

But this time—

the stakes were different.

If they chose wrong—

they could lose everything.

---

The Dark Magician stepped back slowly.

Not retreating.

Not afraid.

Just… finished.

"…Choose carefully," he said.

"Because next time…"

His voice lowered.

"…you won't arrive in time."

Darkness folded around him—

and he vanished.

Not through speed.

Not through movement.

Through absence.

Gone.

Lyra stood frozen for a second.

Then—

"…We split."

Her voice was firm.

Decisive.

No hesitation left.

"…Half go to Fairy Academy."

She turned slightly.

"…The rest stay here."

Orion stepped beside her.

"…And you?"

Lyra's gaze locked onto the tower.

Her flame ignited softly.

Controlled.

Focused.

"…I'm not letting him take this one."

Above them—

the sky flickered.

Just slightly.

As if something unseen was already beginning to move.
