Chapter 24 - ASCENSION PROTOCOL

📘 NEON REQUIEM — SEASON 2, CHAPTER 10

ASCENSION PROTOCOL

---

"There comes a moment when the universe no longer asks who you are... only what you're willing to become."

---

The fracture had begun.

Not in the Cage.

Not in the tether.

But in reality itself.

Across Neon Haven, the sky rippled like cracked glass. Entire districts flickered between existence and nothingness. Neon billboards glitched into symbols no one could read. Streets folded over themselves before snapping back into place.

People stopped.

They looked up.

Something was terribly wrong.

Far beneath the city, hidden below centuries of steel and concrete, the Anchor Engine awakened.

For the first time since the Second Collapse.

Its rings began to turn.

Slowly.

Then faster.

A deep mechanical hum spread upward through the foundations of Neon Haven, shaking every building.

In the Council Chamber, alarms screamed.

Rows of ancient monitors, untouched for generations, lit up one after another.

ANCHOR INSTABILITY: CRITICAL

DIMENSIONAL BLEED DETECTED

ASCENSION PROTOCOL AVAILABLE

The remaining Council members stared in horror.

One whispered,

"It wasn't a myth..."

---

Far beyond reality...

Kael floated inside the fractured Cage.

Cracks spread across its radiant bars like veins of lightning.

Each pulse from his tether widened them.

Each heartbeat echoed through dimensions.

He looked at his hands.

Blue light wrapped around his fingers—not wild anymore.

Controlled.

Alive.

He wasn't forcing the tether.

The tether was finally moving with him.

Sentinel Virex appeared beyond the Cage, their expression more solemn than ever.

"It has begun."

Kael looked up.

"I know."

"You still have time."

"Time for what?"

Virex stepped closer.

"To surrender."

Kael laughed quietly.

"You've known me long enough to know I won't."

"No."

Virex's voice carried genuine sadness.

"I hoped Lira would change your mind."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"You leave her out of this."

"I cannot."

The Cage trembled again.

"She is the reason this protocol must begin."

---

*Ascension Protocol*

The void darkened.

Every Watcher appeared at once.

Thousands.

Perhaps millions.

Their immense forms encircled the prison like silent constellations.

Together they raised their hands.

Reality stopped moving.

The stars froze.

Time itself seemed to hold its breath.

A single voice echoed across existence.

"Initiating Ascension Protocol."

The words reverberated through Kael's soul.

Ancient symbols ignited across the Cage.

Not restraints.

Commands.

The tether reacted instantly.

Blue light erupted from Kael's chest.

Pain exploded through his body.

He collapsed to one knee.

His memories...

were being pulled out of him.

His mother's smile.

His first day in Neon Haven.

Training with the Guardians.

The quiet moments with Lira.

Every laugh.

Every failure.

Every reason he had to remain Kael.

The Watchers spoke as one.

"Emotion creates instability."

"Memory creates attachment."

"Attachment creates convergence."

"We will preserve the Anchor."

"We will erase the man."

---

Kael screamed.

Not because it hurt.

Because he could feel himself forgetting.

His mother's face blurred.

The streets of Neon Haven faded.

He reached desperately for the memories.

But they slipped away like water through his fingers.

Then...

one memory refused to move.

Lira.

Standing beneath the neon rain on the night they first trusted each other.

She smiled.

"You don't have to carry everything alone."

The protocol intensified.

The memory remained.

Again.

More power.

Still...

it remained.

The Watchers hesitated.

"Impossible."

"It cannot be removed."

"Why?"

Sentinel Virex answered quietly.

"Because it was not merely remembered."

Kael lifted his head.

Blue fire burned in his eyes.

"It was chosen."

The Cage shook violently.

---

Lira ran.

The final bridge between worlds collapsed behind her with every step.

Fragments of reality drifted into endless darkness.

The golden crystal from the Oracle floated beside the blue shard.

One represented memory.

The other...

possibility.

Together they illuminated a single path.

Ahead.

The Cage.

Closer than ever before.

Kael's scream echoed through the void.

Her heart nearly stopped.

"Kael!"

She sprinted faster.

The space around her distorted violently.

The Watchers noticed.

"The Variable approaches."

"Prevent convergence."

Massive hands of living light descended from the darkness, attempting to seal the path.

Lira didn't slow.

She leapt.

The shard exploded with blue energy.

The golden crystal answered with radiant gold.

The two lights intertwined.

Not competing.

Harmonizing.

The barrier shattered.

The Watchers recoiled.

"The relics..."

"They resonate."

"How?"

A faint voice echoed through the void.

Not the Oracle.

Someone older.

Someone amused.

"Because..."

"...they were never meant to be separated."

Every Watcher turned.

Silence spread through creation.

Someone else had spoken.

---

Deep beyond the shattered edges of reality...

A single figure stood upon an endless plane of white stone.

His face remained hidden beneath a long mantle woven from shifting constellations.

Around him floated countless fragments of broken universes, orbiting as calmly as leaves carried on a gentle breeze.

He watched.

Not with excitement.

Not with anger.

With patience.

One fractured world drifted into his outstretched hand.

He examined it quietly.

Then spoke for the first time in countless ages.

"So..."

"They've finally reached this point."

He closed his hand.

The broken world reassembled itself.

Perfectly.

For a heartbeat.

Then cracked again.

He sighed.

"I warned them."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"They chose cages instead of healing."

He looked toward the distant light of the Cage where Kael struggled against the Ascension Protocol.

"And now..."

"...the last Anchor awakens."

Without moving another muscle...

every fracture across reality pulsed once.

Kael felt it.

Lira felt it.

Even the Watchers turned toward the impossible presence.

One whispered in fear.

"The Architect..."

---

Back inside the Cage, Kael forced himself to stand.

The protocol still tore at his memories.

His vision blurred.

Names disappeared.

Places faded.

But one truth remained.

Not because the tether protected it.

Because he did.

He closed his eyes.

"I remember."

Blue light gathered around him.

"I remember who I am."

The Cage exploded outward.

Not destroyed.

Opened.

For the first time...

Kael took one step outside his prison.

The Watchers froze.

Lira reached the edge of the collapsing platform.

Their eyes met.

Across the storm.

Across worlds.

Neither spoke.

They didn't need to.

Then—

the Architect raised one finger.

And the entire multiverse went dark.
