Before Moon and Rowan could leave the area, a shrill scream tore out of the ground beneath them.
The sound shook the earth.
Smaller rocks jumped upward from the vibration.
The high frequency of the cry punched into their skulls with a pressure that Moon felt behind his eyes.
For a moment, Rowan's face went pale.
Moon turned toward him immediately.
"Are you okay?"
Rowan clutched his head with both hands, his fingers pressing hard against his temples. His teeth were clenched. He forced a nod through the pain.
"I-I'm fine, I wasn't prepared for that scream... It was really strong."
Moon's expression darkened.
"Create distance. It's a beast that can attack through sound waves. The closer you are to it, the worse the damage. Move now."
Rowan didn't argue. He backed away quickly, putting distance between himself and the crest of the hill.
