Stonewake was less than an hour away when Ennu stopped the group on the old quarry road.
The path had narrowed between two low ridges, with loose stone covering most of the tracks that had once been left by wagons. Adan was still supporting Gabriel as they walked, while Tess helped move the makeshift stretcher carrying Gilbert behind them.
Ennu looked toward the ridge ahead.
"We shouldn't enter Stonewake without knowing what happened in Eldenreach."
Gabriel lifted his head. "What are you planning?"
"I'm going back."
Tess frowned. "By yourself?"
"Yes."
Gabriel moved some of his weight away from Adan, attempting to stand more independently. "No."
Ennu turned toward him. "Hanitz trusted me to gather information. That was part of my job long before you knew me."
"You're injured."
"So are all of us."
Gabriel opened his mouth again, but Ennu continued before he could argue.
