Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: Dreams of Concrete and Steel

Chapter 81: Dreams of Concrete and Steel

POV: Scott

Day 526 begins third consecutive night Scott wakes from identical nightmare—prison facility rendered with architectural precision impossible for normal dreams, guard towers' exact heights calculated, cell blocks' layouts memorized, vulnerable entry points highlighted like blueprint.

"This isn't random neural firing. System's feeding reconnaissance data through dreams because direct interface during sleep might've triggered Andrea's suspicion. Clever and invasive simultaneously—can't dismiss visions when they recur with consistency suggesting purpose rather than subconscious processing."

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: WEST GEORGIA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY]

[DISTANCE: 42 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST]

[STRATEGIC VALUE: EXTREME]

[QUEST AVAILABLE: PRISON REFORMATION - PART 1]

[ACCEPT: Y/N]

Andrea shifts beside him, her hand finding his chest checking heartbeat elevated from nightmare adrenaline. "Third night. Same dream?"

"Same building, same layout," Scott admits carefully, his morning sketching habit developed specifically to process these visions without appearing to consult invisible interface. "Just... architectural details I shouldn't remember this clearly."

POV: Andrea

Andrea watches Scott sketch prison layout on salvaged paper, his pencil movements precise enough suggesting blueprint rather than dream recollection.

"His 'dreams' have pattern. Always accurate, always strategic, always preceding major decisions. Farm's walker pattern dream preceded herd management success. Negan's route dream enabled ambush positioning. Now prison dream suggesting expansion opportunity. Either he's developing precognition or System provides intelligence he disguises as unconscious processing."

"Maybe your mind's processing information overload," Andrea offers, providing cover story both can accept. "You do carry coalition's entire strategic burden. Dreams could be brain's filing system."

Scott accepts explanation gratefully despite both knowing it's insufficient—their unspoken agreement maintains his secrets while acknowledging their existence.

POV: Scott

Morning council convenes at Haven's rebuilt community center, leadership gathering to address routine logistics before Scott introduces proposal that'll sound insane without System justification.

"Have to pitch reconnaissance mission to prison facility forty miles away based on 'recurring dreams' and 'strategic intuition' that'll make Rick question my judgment and Michonne's analytical mind recognize illogical planning. But System insists this facility is game-changer for coalition's expansion, and ignoring that risks stagnation when peace permits growth."

Rick chairs meeting, addressing crop yields and trade negotiations before opening floor for new business.

POV: Rick

Scott's proposal interrupts routine proceedings with strategic suggestion that immediately triggers Rick's skepticism—reconnaissance mission to unverified location based on vague justification represents risky resource allocation when coalition's finally stable.

"Scott's instincts have proven reliable, but 'recurring dreams' isn't tactical intelligence. Law enforcement training demands evidence-based decisions rather than intuition-guided gambling. But his track record includes saving us repeatedly through improbable foresight. Balance skepticism against results."

"West Georgia Correctional?" Rick questions, studying Scott's sketches showing architectural detail that dreams shouldn't provide. "Based on what intelligence? Refugee reports, radio signals, actual reconnaissance?"

Scott navigates deflection carefully, mixing partial truth with strategic reasoning that doesn't require System revelation. "EMT training included institutional architecture familiarization—hospitals, prisons, schools. The layout in my... recurring visions matches correctional facility standard design. Plus population growth requires expansion. Current Prison houses seventy-five comfortably but strains at capacity. Second major facility lets us distribute population and establish forward operating base."

POV: Michonne

Michonne's analytical mind dissects Scott's proposal identifying logical gaps masked by reasonable-sounding justifications that don't withstand scrutiny.

"Dreams don't provide architectural blueprints. EMT training doesn't grant photographic memory of building layouts forty miles away. He's disguising intelligence source again—same pattern noticed across six months of 'lucky guesses' that consistently prove accurate. Not accusing because results justify methods, but pattern demands documentation."

"Your dreams," Michonne states carefully, "have remarkable consistency with reality. Farm herd patterns, Negan's convoy routes, Governor's coordination timing. Now prison layouts. That's statistically improbable unless dreams access information beyond subconscious processing."

Scott's jaw tightens microscopically—tell revealing discomfort with scrutiny despite outward confidence.

POV: Scott

Michonne's probing forces tightrope walk between maintaining cover and providing sufficient justification for mission approval that System insists is critical.

"She's keeping records. Noticed pattern across six months suggesting my 'intuition' derives from intelligence gathering she can't identify. Too smart to accept coincidence, too loyal to confront publicly, but privately documenting for eventual explanation I can't provide without revealing transmigration and System. Time's running out on maintaining perfect secrecy."

"My track record speaks for itself," Scott deflects with humor masking genuine concern. "If my subconscious processes patterns into actionable intelligence, does source matter compared to results? But you're right to question. I'm proposing twelve-person reconnaissance—if facility doesn't match expectations, we return without committing resources. If it does, coalition gains massive strategic advantage."

POV: Daryl

Daryl's tracker instincts support Scott despite Michonne's logical objections—survival in apocalypse requires trusting proven effectiveness over demanding complete transparency about methods.

"Scott's weird. Always been weird. But his weird saves lives consistently. Don't need understanding how he knows things—just need trusting he uses that knowledge for us rather than against us. Michonne's suspicion is smart, but Scott's loyalty is proven."

"Vote's simple," Daryl interjects. "Scott's right more than wrong. Proven that repeatedly. If he says scout west, costs us day and fuel to verify. Pays off, we gain facility solving crowding problems."

Council votes approval with conditions—twelve-person team, three-day maximum deployment, abort if facility is compromised or intelligence proves inaccurate.

POV: Michonne

After meeting concludes, Michonne corners Scott privately in empty hallway where council decisions echo through implications about trust and secrets.

"He's hiding something significant. Not malicious—his loyalty is unquestionable—but possessing intelligence source he can't or won't reveal. That's operational security risk regardless of good intentions. Need understanding whether his secrets endanger coalition even while providing advantages."

"Pattern recognition isn't accusation," Michonne states quietly. "But your 'dreams' have hundred-percent accuracy across six months. That's beyond lucky guessing into intelligence sourcing you're disguising. I'll support publicly because results justify methods. Privately, I'm documenting because coalition leadership requires transparency eventually."

Scott meets her analytical gaze without flinching, his response mixing deflection with genuine appreciation for her discretion. "If I had intelligence source beyond normal methods, would revealing it strengthen coalition or just satisfy curiosity that doesn't improve outcomes?"

"Depends on source's reliability and whether it compromises security," Michonne answers honestly.

"Then trust it's reliable and doesn't compromise anyone," Scott replies, the closest he's come to admitting System's existence without actually revealing it.

Michonne nods slowly, accepting temporary detente while maintaining private vigilance. "Your secrets are yours until they're not. Just remember that eventually transparency becomes necessary even when uncomfortable."

POV: Scott

That evening, Scott studies prison sketches while Andrea feeds Hope, both parents processing day's developments through domestic routine that grounds leadership stress in familial normalcy.

"Michonne's closing in on truth despite careful management. Her documentation means someone will eventually compile evidence suggesting intelligence source beyond normal capacity. Foreknowledge is diluting through timeline divergence—can't predict events that never happened in show. But System remains, providing reconnaissance and strategic guidance that becomes harder explaining as coincidental intuition."

"Your dreams are getting more specific," Andrea observes, watching Scott's detailed architectural rendering. "Guard tower heights, cell block capacities, even fence material specifications. That's beyond normal dream recall into photographic documentation."

Scott forces casual shrug despite System's waypoint marker pulsing west toward facility that might expand coalition or expose his secrets completely. "Maybe I should've been architect instead of EMT. Tomorrow we find out if subconscious is genius or insane."

POV: Andrea

Andrea doesn't push beyond observation, her maternal focus on Hope while husband pursues mysterious intelligence that consistently proves accurate despite illogical sourcing.

"He's protecting something worth guarding based on six months of correct decisions. Won't demand full disclosure when partial transparency maintains marriage and coalition leadership both. But pattern suggests eventually secrets become unsustainable regardless of good intentions behind keeping them."

"Be careful tomorrow," Andrea requests, the catch-all concern covering tactical dangers and exposure risks equally. "Hope needs father returning safely. I need husband not taking unnecessary risks proving mysterious dreams."

Scott promises care while System countdown marks hours until reconnaissance mission that might reveal too much about advantages he's maintained secret for nearly two years.

Tomorrow they scout. Tonight uncertainty about whether his cover survives much longer.
