Chapter 227 - "Oaths Written in Poison"

Morning light had only just settled across the training ground.

The dew still clung stubbornly to crushed grass where bodies lay unconscious. The faint scent of steel and sweat lingered in the air, mingling with the clean chill of dawn.

Kel and Reina had already turned to leave.

The five assailants lay scattered—breathing, defeated, bound by nothing more than Kel's calculated pressure and overwhelming presence.

It should have ended there.

It did not.

A faint scrape of leather against grass.

Too subtle for untrained ears.

But Reina heard it.

Her shoulders tightened half a heartbeat before movement.

One of the five—who had lain motionless—rose with terrifying speed.

His dagger flashed.

Poison gleamed emerald along its edge.

He lunged toward Reina from behind.

Kel's head turned sharply—

But Reina had already sensed him.

She pivoted instantly.

Her sword came up in a clean defensive arc.

Steel met steel.

The dagger deflected—

But not completely.

The attacker twisted his wrist mid-block.

The poisoned blade scraped past her defense.

A shallow cut.

Just below her jawline.

Near her neck.

Time fractured.

Kel saw it.

The thin red line appear.

Then deepen.

Blood spilled down against her collar.

The attacker attempted to withdraw for a second strike—

He never got the chance.

Kel vanished.

One step.

Then impact.

His fist collided with the man's temple with bone-shattering force.

The attacker collapsed instantly.

Kel did not stop.

His palm slammed against the ground.

Earth magic surged outward.

Stone erupted from beneath the grass, coiling like serpents.

The unconscious mercenary was pinned—arms and legs locked beneath hardened rock restraints.

Silence fell again.

Except—

Reina swayed.

Kel turned.

Her fingers trembled slightly around her sword.

The cut bled more than its depth justified.

Her breathing shortened.

Her pupils flickered.

"Reina."

She tried to steady herself.

"It's… nothing."

But already the poison spread.

The faint green discoloration crawled along the edges of the wound.

Kel reached her in an instant and caught her before she could fall.

Her body felt warmer than usual.

Too warm.

She attempted to raise her blade.

Astra Noctis shimmered faintly around her—

Then faltered.

The indigo light flickered out.

Her grip loosened.

She collapsed against him.

"Reina."

No response.

Her breathing became shallow.

The poison moved quickly—far too quickly for ordinary toxin.

Kel's gaze lifted slowly toward the pinned mercenary.

His expression—

Was no longer calm.

It was empty.

He laid Reina gently on the grass.

His hand hovered over the wound briefly, assessing mana flow.

The toxin was arcane-enhanced.

Designed to disrupt aura pathways.

Her Astra Noctis connection could not stabilize under it.

He stood.

Walked toward the trapped mercenary.

Each step measured.

The pinned man regained consciousness slowly.

He blinked up at Kel.

Saw the expression.

And something inside him shifted.

Kel crouched.

"Who sent you?"

His voice was quiet.

Cold.

Not loud.

Not enraged.

Just final.

The mercenary swallowed.

"I cannot say."

His voice trembled slightly despite his effort to steady it.

"It is an oath of our work."

Kel's eyes did not blink.

He shifted slightly.

"Then tell me where you work."

A pause.

"You can tell me that."

The mercenary's eyes flickered.

"I—"

"I will give you your life."

Kel's tone remained even.

"And money."

A faint spark of greed appeared in the mercenary's eyes.

Kel leaned closer.

"You will live."

"And you will walk away."

The man swallowed again.

"If you take oath of not harming me… and give me one thousand gold… I will tell you."

Kel did not hesitate.

"I take oath."

His voice carried the faint weight of mana binding.

"To free you."

"And give you one thousand gold."

The mercenary's face relaxed slightly.

"I work at the Mercenary Alliance."

The words came quickly.

"I got this request from the Mercenary Alliance."

Kel's eyes hardened faintly.

He stood slowly.

Walked toward the fallen dagger lying nearby.

Picked it up.

The poison still glistened.

He returned to the mercenary.

The man's brow furrowed faintly.

"What are you—"

Kel did not answer.

He began cutting.

Small.

Precise.

Controlled.

Across the man's arms.

His torso.

His legs.

Not deep enough to sever arteries.

Just enough to open skin.

Enough for poison to enter.

The mercenary's eyes widened in horror.

"You—"

Kel continued.

Methodical.

Silent.

The toxin seeped through every new wound.

The mercenary began trembling.

Itching.

Burning.

The poison spread faster now.

Through multiple entry points.

Agony multiplied.

Kel set the dagger down.

Returned to Reina.

Lifted her into his arms.

Her skin felt hot.

Her breathing shallow.

Behind him—

The mercenary writhed against the stone restraints.

"You didn't keep your oath!" he screamed hoarsely.

"You are worse than us!"

Kel paused only briefly.

Turned his head slightly.

His eyes—

Devoid of warmth.

"I kept my oath."

His voice carried absolute stillness.

"I said I would free you."

"I am freeing you from your LIFE."

The mercenary choked on his own breath as the toxin ignited through his bloodstream.

"And I will give you gold."

Kel's tone did not change.

"When people bury you, I will throw one thousand gold over your grave."

His eyes narrowed faintly.

"They will fight for it."

"They will dig your grave open."

"Your will not remain in peace even in death."

The mercenary's screams dissolved into ragged sobs.

"You monster—!"

Kel turned away fully.

Cradling Reina carefully.

The man's body convulsed as the poison ravaged him from within.

His own weapon's toxin amplified through dozens of shallow cuts.

Burning.

Itching.

Unbearable.

Kel did not look back.

He did not walk.

He ran.

The city streets blurred past him.

Boots striking stone.

People shouting in alarm as he moved through narrow lanes at impossible speed.

He felt her pulse weakening against his arm.

Her head resting against his chest.

Her silver hair streaked faintly with blood.

"Stay with me."

His voice was lower now.

Less controlled.

He poured mana gently into her body.

Not to counter the poison directly—

But to stabilize aura collapse.

The toxin resisted.

Arcane disruption.

Designed specifically to neutralize awakened abilities.

He reached the healer's district.

Kicked open the first marked door.

A startled healer looked up in shock.

"Help her."

No plea.

No explanation.

Just command.

The healer saw the wound.

Saw the spreading green hue.

And moved instantly.

"Inside."

Kel placed Reina carefully upon a wooden table.

The healer began cutting fabric away from the wound.

Examining.

Applying antidote reagents.

Kel stepped back only enough to allow space.

His hands were stained with her blood.

His breathing steady—

But thin.

The healer worked quickly.

"This poison is layered," the man muttered.

"It's not common."

Kel's gaze darkened.

"Remove it."

The healer applied burning salve.

Reina's body flinched faintly.

Kel's jaw tightened.

The poison began reacting.

Neutralization process slow.

But stabilizing.

Minutes stretched.

Kel did not move.

Did not blink.

The healer finally exhaled.

"She will live."

The words landed heavily.

"But she will need rest."

Kel nodded once.

Nothing more.

Behind his eyes—

A storm moved silently.

The Mercenary Alliance.

He now had direction.

He had proof.

He had motive.

And he had reason.

He glanced once toward Reina's unconscious form.

Her breathing steadier now.

Her aura faint but intact.

The calm he carried before—

Was gone.

In its place—

Something colder.

Measured.

Focused.

He stepped outside the healer's room briefly.

The sun had risen fully now.

Golden light washing over stone streets.

People moved normally.

Unaware.

Kel's gaze lifted toward the distant skyline.

He had kept his oath.

Exactly as spoken.

And now—

He would begin writing new ones.

Not in words.

But in consequence.
