Chapter 336 - "The Quiet Weight of Family"

Night rested softly over House Asheville.

The estate had grown quiet after sunset, the vast mansion now illuminated only by scattered lanterns along the marble corridors. Outside, the courtyard lay washed in silver moonlight, and the phoenix banners newly raised above the towers fluttered gently in the night wind.

Within the mansion, deep in the central wing, the dining hall glowed warmly.

It was a grand chamber, though tonight it felt unusually calm.

The long table that once hosted entire gatherings of nobles now held only two seats occupied.

Candles burned steadily along the center of the polished oak surface, their soft light reflecting against silver plates and crystal glasses.

Kel sat at the far end of the table.

Across from him sat Reina Asheville, the Matriarch of the house.

Despite the size of the hall, the atmosphere between them felt strangely intimate—quiet, composed, and free of the noise that once filled the estate during Lord Mavric's rule.

Servants had already left.

The two of them now shared the room alone.

The Meal

Reina lifted her fork slowly, cutting a small piece of roasted meat before placing it gently on her plate.

Her posture was elegant, her movements refined.

Even after becoming Matriarch, she still carried the same quiet grace she had shown during their days in the citadel.

Kel, however, ate far more simply.

He leaned slightly back in the chair, one arm resting against the armrest as he took slow, deliberate bites.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The faint clinking of silverware against porcelain echoed softly in the large hall.

Then Kel finally broke the silence.

"Why haven't you brought your mother and brother here yet?"

Reina paused.

The fork stopped halfway between her plate and her lips.

For a brief moment, her expression shifted.

Not sadness.

But careful thought.

She placed the fork down slowly.

"I promised my mother something."

Kel raised his eyes slightly.

Reina continued calmly.

"I told her I would relocate her and my brother to one of our mansions in the citadel."

Her fingers rested lightly against the edge of the table.

"Right now… I'm still stabilizing everything here."

Her gaze lowered slightly toward her plate.

"I don't want her to see me under this much pressure."

There was a softness in her voice now.

"She worries too much."

Kel listened quietly.

Reina exhaled softly.

"If she saw me constantly dealing with nobles, knights, merchants, and house matters…"

"…she would only stress herself."

She lifted her gaze again.

"So once things settle here…"

"…I will bring them to the estate."

Kel nodded slightly.

"Clever thought."

Reina blinked.

"Clever?"

Kel took another bite calmly.

"Protecting your family from unnecessary stress is a wise decision."

Then he added quietly—

"Many nobles fail to understand that."

Reina's lips curved faintly.

A small smile.

But before she could answer—

A voice suddenly echoed within Kel's mind.

Sairen

You sound strangely approving.

Kel did not react outwardly.

His expression remained calm.

But inside his mind—

Sairen's voice carried faint amusement.

Did you hear how gently she spoke about her family?

Kel continued eating slowly.

Yes.

Sairen hummed softly.

You're quiet tonight.

Kel responded calmly.

I'm thinking.

Sairen's tone sharpened slightly.

About what?

Kel's thoughts shifted briefly toward Reina sitting across from him.

About what kind of house she will build.

Sairen chuckled lightly.

You mean the house you are building through her.

Kel didn't answer immediately.

Which was answer enough.

At the Table

Reina lifted her glass of water and took a small sip.

Then she looked at Kel again.

"You've been quiet."

Kel shrugged faintly.

"Just thinking."

"About what?"

Kel rested his chin lightly on his knuckles.

"Your future."

Reina blinked.

"My future?"

Kel nodded slightly.

"You're moving carefully."

"That's good."

"But your real challenges haven't begun yet."

Reina's expression turned serious.

"I know."

She placed her glass down.

"The nobles who supported me are still waiting."

Kel nodded.

"They're waiting for the moment they think you're weak."

Reina's eyes sharpened slightly.

"And when that moment comes…"

Kel finished the sentence calmly.

"They'll try to control you."

The candlelight flickered gently across the table.

Reina leaned slightly forward.

"But they won't succeed."

Kel raised an eyebrow faintly.

"You sound confident."

Reina smiled softly.

"Because I'm not alone."

Her eyes met his.

"And because you've already planned ten steps ahead."

Kel remained silent.

But Sairen's voice returned inside his mind.

She trusts you more than anyone.

Kel responded quietly.

She has reason to.

Sairen's tone softened slightly.

And you?

Kel didn't answer.

A Moment of Quiet

The two of them continued eating.

Outside the dining hall windows, the wind rustled faintly through the estate gardens.

Reina eventually set down her utensils.

Her plate was nearly empty.

Kel noticed.

"You eat slowly."

Reina laughed softly.

"I've always been like that."

She paused.

Then added quietly—

"My mother used to scold me for it."

The warmth in her voice carried memories.

Kel watched her carefully.

"You miss them."

Reina didn't deny it.

"Yes."

She looked toward the window.

"But I know they're safe."

Kel nodded.

"They are."

Reina glanced at him.

"You made sure of that."

Kel didn't answer.

Sairen spoke again inside his mind.

You arranged their protection weeks ago.

Kel responded calmly.

Of course.

If they became a weakness, it would threaten her.

Sairen sighed softly.

You really do plan for everything.

Kel's thoughts remained steady.

Not everything.

The Matriarch's Resolve

Reina stood from her chair slowly.

She walked toward the window.

The moonlight spilled gently across her face.

For a moment she simply watched the courtyard below.

Then she spoke quietly.

"My mother always told me something."

Kel looked up slightly.

"She said…"

"…family is the only place where you can remove your armor."

Reina's fingers rested against the window frame.

"That's why I want to bring them here eventually."

Kel's voice remained calm.

"Then build a house strong enough for them."

Reina nodded.

"I will."

She turned back toward the table.

Her expression now carried quiet determination.

"I will make House Asheville strong enough…"

"…so no one can threaten my family ever again."

Kel leaned back in his chair slightly.

A faint smile touched the corner of his lips.

"That's a good goal."

Sairen whispered softly in his mind.

You're proud of her.

Kel responded calmly.

She's learning.

The Night Continues

Reina returned to the table.

Servants quietly entered the hall to clear the dishes.

The candle flames flickered as they moved.

The dinner had ended.

But the night still stretched long before them.

Outside the estate walls, the empire continued turning.

Nobles plotted.

Merchants negotiated.

Armies trained.

Yet within the Asheville estate—

A new foundation was being built.

Not only for a noble house.

But for a future where Reina Asheville would stand stronger than any noble family that once tried to control her.

And beside her—

Whether in shadows or in plain sight—

Stood the man quietly shaping that future piece by piece.

Kel von Rosenfold.

A strategist.

A protector.

And perhaps—

The most dangerous ally House Asheville could ever possess.
