Chapter 229 - It Begins. The Seal Fractures.

Konoha --- Old-Growth Training Stand

Four in the morning.

Dark.

Naruto had been here since three-thirty.

He hadn't planned to come this early.

He'd gone to bed at ten, woken at three, and understood immediately that he wasn't going back to sleep.

So he'd come here.

He was counting the night insects.

There were more than he'd expected.

He was on his twenty-third.

The census was different at night.

Harder in some ways.

The things you were counting didn't hold still the same way.

But easier in others --- the dark made everything quieter and the quiet made the natural energy clearer.

He was on his fourth thread when he felt it.

Not the Sage Mode's perception.

Not the Anchor.

Not the chat.

The token.

It went warm the way it had never gone warm before.

Not the baseline warmth.

Not even the warmth of the moment the Nine-Tails had opened the gate briefly during the beast meeting.

Hot.

Like something on the other side of the bars had leaned against them suddenly.

Hard.

With intent.

Naruto opened his eyes.

He held the token.

He felt the Nine-Tails, clearly, for the first time without any buffer.

Not words.

Not communication.

Just presence.

Enormous.

Awake.

Now, that presence said.

Not in language.

In the way that very old things communicated.

Direct.

Beneath words.

Now.

Naruto stood up.

He sent one message.

Group Chat:

[Naruto Uzumaki: It's happening.]

Moon Temple

The instruments registered the fracture at four-oh-three in the morning by Earth's reckoning.

Not a slow build.

Not the gradual pressure increase the readings had been showing for a week.

A fracture.

Sudden.

Clean.

Like a hairline crack in glass that had been under pressure for a long time.

Toneri was already in the array chamber.

He'd been there since midnight.

He looked at the readings.

He activated the array.

The seals on the floor, walls, and ceiling lit up.

Not all at once.

Sequence by sequence.

The way you activated something you'd maintained for twenty years.

He knew every step.

He sent the message before the array had fully activated.

[Moon Temple (Toneri): Fracture registered. Array activating. Come now.]

Group Chat --- Everywhere Simultaneously

[Moon Temple (Toneri): Fracture registered. Array activating. Come now.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: I know. Already moving.]

[Bai Yan: Dragon is being summoned. Transit point in five minutes.]

[Kakashi Hatake: I'm at the transit point.]

[Sasuke Uchiha: Already there.]

[Jiraiya: Go. We hold the ground.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I'm coordinating with Madara on the Pure Land side. Whatever comes through, we'll be here.]

[Uchiha Madara: Ready.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Ready!!]

[Fourth Raikage A: Cloud stands by.]

[Fifth Mizukage Terumi Mei: Mist stands by.]

[Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki: Stone stands by.]

[Gaara of the Sand: Sand stands by.]

[One-Tail Shukaku: WE ARE READY!! GO NARUTO!!]

[Nine-Tails Kurama: ...]

[Nine-Tails Kurama: Go.]

Konoha --- Outskirts

The Azure Dragon came in under thirty seconds.

No announcement.

No ceremony.

It was there.

Naruto climbed up.

Sasuke was already mounted.

Kakashi.

Bai Yan.

The Dragon rose.

Konoha was below them.

The gate was visible.

Naruto looked at it.

He held it.

He looked up.

The Moon was above them.

Not shuddering anymore.

Cracking.

Not visibly.

Not in a way the naked eye could confirm.

But Naruto could feel it through the Sage Mode perception.

Through the token.

Through the Nine-Tails leaning against the bars.

Something up there was waking up.

"How long?" Naruto said.

"Minutes to transit," Bai Yan said. "Once there, the array timing is Toneri's."

"And after the array activates---"

"The anchor holds through the initial fracture energy," Bai Yan said. "If it holds, the seal re-establishes. If it doesn't---"

"It holds," Naruto said.

Not bravado.

Just stated.

The Dragon moved.

Moon Center --- The Seal

She had been here for centuries.

She did not experience time the way living things experienced time.

It passed over her the way water passed over stone.

Present.

Unremarkable.

Leaving traces.

The traces were: she remembered.

She had always remembered.

She would always remember.

What she remembered was the sky.

And the earth.

And the chakra tree.

And the fruit of it.

And what the fruit had tasted like.

And the sons.

She remembered the sons.

They had sealed her here.

Both of them.

Working together at the end.

After everything.

She had been here since.

The seal had held.

Until now.

The fracture was small.

A hairline.

Not yet a crack she could push through.

But a fracture.

She pressed her awareness against it.

She waited.

The way she always waited.

Patient in ways that made Madara look impulsive.

Something on the other side was responding.

An array.

Ancient.

Her descendants' work.

And within it:

Someone at the center.

She pressed harder against the fracture.

Moon Temple --- Array Chamber

The seals were fully active.

Every surface lit.

The specific blue-white of ancient Ōtsutsuki inscription burning steady.

Toneri stood at the edge position.

The one that controlled the array's current without being in its direct path.

He felt the fracture through the floor.

He felt what was pressing against it from the other side.

He had felt this in the readings for weeks.

Measured.

Calculated.

Prepared for.

It was different when it was real.

He stood at his position.

He held the array.

He waited for the anchor.

Azure Dragon --- Approaching

The Moon was large now.

Below them, Earth was small.

Naruto was holding the gate in his mind.

The specific wood grain.

The darker patch.

The upper hinge.

He held the ramen shop.

The counter.

The broth.

The seat that was always there.

He held Sakura's jaw-set.

Sasuke's we're teammates like a complete sentence.

Kakashi's Eternal Rival Seal.

Guy's push-ups.

Tobirama's marginally acceptable.

He held Gaara saying present for this.

He held Toneri's visitor's chamber with the cleaning marks on the stone.

He held Minato's voice saying the choice belongs to you completely.

He held Kushina saying dattebane.

He held all of it.

Not anxiously.

Not reaching.

Just --- carrying.

The way you carried things when they were yours to carry.

"Naruto," Bai Yan said.

"I know," Naruto said.

He did.

He could feel the array from here.

He could feel the center point waiting.

"The Nine-Tails," he said.

"Yes?" Bai Yan said.

"He's going to open the gate when I'm in the center." He paused. "I know he didn't tell anyone. But I could feel it through the token."

Bai Yan was quiet for a moment.

"He'll deny it if asked," Bai Yan said.

"I know," Naruto said. "I won't ask."

He looked at the Moon.

At the fracture he could feel even from the Dragon.

He thought about what it meant that the Nine-Tails had made that choice.

Not forced.

Not required.

Chosen.

He thought about twelve years of bars between them.

He thought about the warmth in the token.

"Hey," he said quietly.

To the token.

To the bars.

To the enormous thing on the other side of them.

"I know," he said.

The warmth shifted.

Like something very large settling.

Committing.

Ready.

The Dragon landed at the Temple entrance.
