Konoha --- Team 7's Training Ground
Two days after.
Six in the morning.
Sasuke had been here since five-thirty.
Not training immediately.
Just sitting against the split post.
Eyes open.
Looking at the training ground.
He'd been doing this most mornings lately.
Not as meditation.
Not as technique.
Just --- looking at where the work happened before the work happened.
He had the training log open on his knee.
He'd kept one since he was seven.
Technique development notes.
Calibration records.
Times and weights and improvement rates.
He looked at the last entry.
Six Paths seed: first threshold crossed. Cultivation ongoing. Perception layer operating at approximately 60% clarity.
He turned the page.
He wrote the date.
He looked at what he wanted to write.
He'd been carrying the name for two days.
Just carrying it.
Letting it settle before he did anything with it.
He wrote:
Current goal: cultivate capability in service of being present for what matters.
He looked at it.
He read it twice.
He thought about whether it was true.
It was.
He thought about whether it was precise enough.
He adjusted:
Current goal: cultivate capability in service of being present for what matters. Not power for its own sake. Not revenge. Not proof of anything. Being present. For the things that matter.
He read that.
He kept it.
He closed the log.
He looked at the split post.
At the fracture line.
He thought about what had happened in the Moon Temple's array chamber.
About the intention field tripling.
About the anchor holds.
He thought about what his job had been.
Not the anchor.
The person who saw it coming and stood beside it.
He thought about that being enough.
More than enough.
He thought about the rivals ranking.
About come back in ten years.
He opened the training log again.
He added one more line.
Ten-year goal: be someone worth being first with.
He looked at that.
He kept it.
He closed the log.
He started the morning session.
Naruto arrived at seven-fifteen.
He was warm from the Sage session.
Moving the way he moved now after the census --- present in the place rather than just occupying it.
He walked into the training ground.
He saw Sasuke.
He saw something different in his face.
Not dramatic.
Not obvious.
Just --- different.
The specific quality of something having been decided and written down.
Naruto recognized it.
He'd seen it on his own face in the Ichiraku window sometimes after training.
He walked past Sasuke to his usual position.
He started his session.
Sasuke kept his going.
They trained.
Side by side.
Not coordinated.
Just present.
Twenty minutes in, Sasuke said without looking up:
"The perception layer is at sixty percent clarity."
"How long to full?"
"Tobirama estimates weeks. Based on the current rate, probably less."
"Less than weeks?"
"Less than his estimate of weeks."
Naruto processed this.
"So we keep doing what we're doing and it gets there."
"Yes."
"Okay." He ran the Rasengan at its secondary rotation. "The Sage Mode stable form --- Jiraiya says two weeks minimum."
"Based on current rate?"
"Probably less," Naruto said.
Sasuke looked at him.
"You just said that to match what I said."
"It's also true."
"...Yes," Sasuke agreed.
They trained.
The split post stood between them.
The fracture line in it.
Naruto looked at it during a water break.
"Sasuke."
"Mm."
"The thing in your chakra," Naruto said. "The one you couldn't name."
Sasuke was quiet.
"Do you have a name for it?"
A pause.
"Yes," Sasuke said.
"Are you going to tell me?"
"No."
Naruto looked at him.
Sasuke was looking at the post.
"...Is it a good name?" Naruto said.
Sasuke was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," he said. "It is."
Naruto looked at him for a moment longer.
Then he went back to training.
He didn't push.
Sasuke had the name.
He'd share it when he was ready.
Or he wouldn't.
Either way it was his.
They trained.
The morning was good.
Group Chat:
[Uzumaki Naruto @Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Tobirama-sensei. The Rasengan stable form. I want to start the integration work.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Already?]
[Uzumaki Naruto: I've been thinking about the secondary rotation and how it integrates with the Sage Mode's natural energy alignment. There's a combination there.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...Describe the combination you're envisioning.]
Naruto described it.
A long pause.
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: That's the Rasenshuriken.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: The what?]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: A technique that doesn't exist yet. That you just independently derived from first principles.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: ...Did I?]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: You described it perfectly. Wind nature. Rasengan base. Natural energy integration. Shuriken dispersal pattern.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: So I should---]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Don't develop it yet. Your wind nature needs work first. The technique will destroy your arm if your chakra control at that level isn't sufficient.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: ...Oh.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Add wind nature training to the schedule. Start today.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: YES SENSEI.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: And stop calling me that.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: YES TOBIRAMA-SENSEI.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: TOBIRAMA GAVE HIM A NEW TECHNIQUE TO WORK TOWARD!! HAHAHA!! TOBIRAMA HAS A STUDENT!!]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I do NOT have---]
[Uchiha Madara: Tobirama.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: What.]
[Uchiha Madara: You have a student.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Begin wind nature training tomorrow. Today is for recovery. Go eat something.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: YES SIR!!]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: And stop typing in capital letters.]
[Uzumaki Naruto: understood]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]
In the training ground, Naruto put the chat away.
He was grinning.
Sasuke: "What."
"Tobirama-sensei gave me a new technique to work toward."
"Which one."
"I can't tell you yet. It doesn't exist."
"It doesn't exist."
"I derived it from first principles."
"...You derived a non-existent technique from first principles."
"Apparently."
Sasuke looked at him for a long moment.
"Wind nature," he said.
"Yes."
"You need to develop wind nature."
"Yes."
"That takes---"
"Tobirama says start tomorrow."
Sasuke looked at him.
"You're going to develop a new technique that doesn't exist yet."
"Yes."
"While still developing the Sage Mode stable form."
"Yes."
"And the anchor preparation for whenever the seal needs maintenance again."
"Yes."
"And the census."
"I'm not stopping the census. That's just how I am now."
Sasuke was quiet for a moment.
He thought about the training log in his pocket.
Cultivate capability in service of being present for what matters.
He thought about ten years.
He thought about what being first with Naruto actually meant.
He thought about the rivals ranking having to wait because they needed to become what they were going to be first.
"Okay," he said.
"Okay?"
"You develop the non-existent technique. I finish cultivating the Six Paths seed. We both develop what we're developing." He paused. "In ten years we see what it added up to."
Naruto looked at him.
"That's very---"
"Practical," Sasuke said.
"I was going to say mature."
"Don't."
"It was mature."
"Naruto."
"It was a mature and sensible---"
"I will leave."
"---and also kind of inspiring---"
Sasuke stood up and picked up his bag.
Naruto was already laughing.
"OKAY OKAY I'M DONE---"
"You're not done."
"I'm done---"
"You have the face."
"SASUKE I'M DONE---"
"Go do wind nature training."
"THAT'S TOMORROW---"
"Start today."
"TOBIRAMA-SENSEI SAID TOMORROW---"
"I'm saying today."
"YOU'RE NOT MY SENSEI---"
Sasuke walked out of the training ground.
Naruto watched him go.
He was still grinning.
He thought about ten years.
He thought about all of it adding up.
He started gathering wind nature chakra.
He'd start today.
Obviously.
