Ryuya calculated silently.
"Father, if there is nothing else, I will take my leave. I have matters to discuss with Master Kokushibo."
"Go," Muzan replied coolly. "But do not delay the attack on the Swordsmith Village. I expect results soon."
Since Ryuya mentioned Kokushibo, Muzan had little reason to stop him.
"Nakime. Send me to Yoshiwara."
"Yes, Lord Kibutsuji Muzan."
The biwa strings rang out.
In an instant, Muzan vanished from the Infinity Castle.
Nakime's fingers paused briefly afterward.
Lately… Lord Muzan had been visiting the Yoshiwara red-light district rather frequently.
She recalled seeing Daki looking pale and exhausted not long ago, as though severely overworked.
Could it be that Lord Muzan… and Daki…?
"Nakime, send Ryuya and Kochou Kanae out."
Behind the bamboo screen, Kokushibo slowly rose.
Ryuya's eyes flickered.
Master was here the entire time?
Was he ensuring my safety?
"Greetings, Master," Kanae said politely, bowing slightly.
"Hm. Kanae. You have good judgment," Kokushibo replied calmly.
He was increasingly satisfied with his disciple's chosen woman.
Her strength was respectable.
She would not become a burden.
"Thank you, Master."
Kanae smiled and instinctively tightened her hold around Ryuya's arm.
Upper Rank One.
And yet—
Far less oppressive than Muzan.
At least to her.
Moments later, Nakime plucked the strings again.
The world folded.
And the three of them were transported—
Back to the small town at the foot of Tanjiro's mountain.
The Battlefield
Rengoku Kyojuro swung his Nichirin Blade desperately, flames blooming brilliantly within the lingering blood mist.
His breathing was heavy.
Lower Rank Three, though already injured and exhausted, continued to stall him with Blood Demon Art attacks.
Meanwhile, Hantengu withdrew from direct combat and turned his attention elsewhere.
The weaker ones first.
Like flies—annoying, but easy to crush.
With a massive claw, Hantengu smashed into the roof of a house.
Wooden beams and tiles rained down toward Mitsuri and Murata.
"Water Breathing, Sixth Form: Whirlpool!"
Murata swung his blade, forming a spiraling current to deflect the falling debris.
"Mitsuri! Go! I'll hold them off—find somewhere to hide!"
Even if he lacked strength—
He had pride.
Water Breathing flowed gently yet defensively, matching his temperament.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm causing trouble again!"
Mitsuri hurried away as instructed.
"Running? Don't be ridiculous."
Hantengu's enormous fist descended toward her.
A shadow engulfed her vision.
Mitsuri drew her standard Nichirin Blade awkwardly and raised it in defense.
Boom!
The impact sent her flying.
"Mitsuri!"
Murata's face turned pale.
Blood streaked the ground where she landed.
Hantengu raised his fist again, mercilessly.
"Die, woman!"
The fist grew larger in Mitsuri's vision.
She tried to move.
Her body refused.
Was this the end?
She hadn't even found someone to grow old with yet…
In that final heartbeat—
A face appeared in her mind.
Iguro Obanai.
If only—
If only he would come.
"Serpent Breathing, Fourth Form: Slithering Serpent!"
A figure darted in like a striking python.
At the brink of death, Iguro Obanai—currently hunted by the Demon Slayer Corps—happened to pass by.
Without hesitation, he swept Mitsuri into his arms and slashed.
Hantengu's descending fist was carved apart, dissolving into a spray of blood.
"Mr. Iguro?!"
Mitsuri's eyes widened in disbelief.
He saved her?
He was holding her?
She wasn't dead?
Her cheeks flushed instantly.
A hero saving a maiden—
How romantic.
How wonderful.
How—
Her thoughts spiraled as she clutched his waist tightly.
"Hold on to me. Don't be afraid. As long as I'm here, you won't die."
Iguro's heterochromatic eyes flicked downward.
"Y-Yes!"
She hugged him even tighter.
The closer she held him—
The safer she felt.
Iguro felt heat rise through his entire body.
Her scent.
Her warmth.
Her arms around him.
His breathing grew heavier.
His heartbeat pounded violently.
His sword movements slowed—not because of Hantengu—
But because the girl in his arms had unsettled him.
He had always felt repulsed by women.
Yet—
Why did he feel no such resistance now?
What made Kanroji Mitsuri different?
And why—
Did he not want to let her go?
