Chapter 17 – A Family Torn by Dawn

For a moment, there was only silence.

The world still felt fragile, as if one breath could shatter it all again.

Laura stayed where she was — kneeling in the dirt, holding Joshua close against her chest.

His warmth was the only thing reminding her that she was still alive.

Then—

Footsteps.

Soft. Measured. Drawing closer.

Her entire body tensed.

Even in her battered state, instinct drove her to stand.

She shifted Joshua into one arm, her other hand reaching for the blade lying near her feet.

Each step grew louder — deliberate, cautious.

Not like an enemy… but not entirely familiar either.

Laura raised her weapon, every muscle screaming from exhaustion, her breath sharp and uneven.

Then the shadow emerged from the treeline.

And her heart stopped.

> "...Grey?"

Her husband stepped into view — torn clothes, soot across his face, eyes wide and wild with disbelief.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The silence between them trembled — heavy with relief and grief all at once.

Then she ran.

She stumbled halfway, her knees almost giving out, but she didn't stop.

When she reached him, she threw her arms around his neck, and he caught her with a low grunt — holding her as if afraid she might vanish.

For that fleeting instant, the chaos, the screams, the blood — all of it felt far away.

Just a family, broken but together again.

Grey pulled back slightly, his eyes darting around the silent clearing.

> "What happened?" he asked, voice hoarse. "Everything just... stopped. The air froze. Even the flames went still."

Laura looked at him, her expression torn between pride and disbelief.

> "It was Joshua," she said softly. "He... he shone with light, Grey. A divine light. It froze everything — even them."

Grey's eyes widened. The soldier in him went still.

He looked down at the small child in her arms — so peaceful, so unaware of what had just transpired — and whispered,

> "He's a miracle…"

His gaze hardened.

> "And that's all the more reason we have to protect him."

Laura shook her head, already knowing what he meant but refusing to accept it.

> "No… no, please. We just got you back. We can run together. We can—"

> "Laura," Grey interrupted softly, his hand gripping her shoulder. "He's not safe with us. They're after him — not us anymore. You saw what he did. If they find out…"

She swallowed hard, tears burning behind her eyes.

Her strength — the same unbreakable resolve that had carried her through battle — cracked beneath the weight of those words.

> "I can't," she whispered. "He's our son…"

Grey turned toward the midwife, who still stood trembling, eyes red from crying.

He gently took Joshua from Laura's arms.

The baby stirred, letting out a faint whimper — and that single sound nearly broke her.

> "Please," Grey said, voice low and steady, though his hands trembled. "Take him. Hide him. Raise him like your own if you must. But keep him safe."

The midwife nodded slowly, clutching the child like something holy — or cursed.

> "I… I will. You have my word."

> "This isn't worth much, but… you could sell it if you need to," Grey said, removing a bracelet from his wrist and handing it to her.

Before she could reply, Grey turned back to his wife.

Tears streaked down Laura's face, her lips trembling as her body shook with silent sobs.

> "No… please, Grey… please don't…"

He stepped forward, pulling her close one last time.

Then, as her knees weakened, he took her hand — and began to pull her away.

She resisted at first, reaching back desperately toward her child, fingers outstretched, clawing at the air as if sheer will could bridge the distance.

> "Joshua!" she cried, her voice breaking. "Mama's here! Please—!"

But Grey held her, whispering through his own tears,

> "We have to go, Laura… for him."

The night swallowed their cries.

The midwife stood alone in the darkness, clutching the child against her heart.

Laura's last echo lingered in the still air — raw, haunting, and eternal.

> The sound of a mother's love being torn from her child.
