Ash looked around as he finally made it to pewter city .
This was it .
This was the city of his first gym badge. It wouldn't be easy but with time and training , that badge was as good as theirs .
With that he started to make his way to the poke-center. It wasn't too far , ash could see it from here .
As he made his way there, he saw a few interesting things . There was a boy playing with a Nidoran , another guy in small garden of all things .
' huh weird ' he thought before he finally arrived at his destination and went in the poke-center .
He walked straight to the front desk before giving nurse joy his pokeballs.
" we'll call you in a few minutes " she said before she left to heal them .
He then turned around and went to the waiting area .
As he sat down to wait , he pulled out his rotom phase and called his mum .
It rang a few times before she finally answered.
" hello honey , I'm happy you made it to pewter city safely . I was getting worried you would be lost and not be able to get signal to call for help " she said with a sigh of relief because that he was safe .
" I'm fine mum , I made it here without any problem " he reassured her.
" well that's good to hear. How is squirtle? he is doing ok ? " she asked about the two pokemon.
" yeah he's with nurse joy right now . I also forgot to tell I caught a pikachu on the way to viridian city " ash told her .
" really ?! Why didn't you tell me ?! " delia asked a bit shocked.
" sorry sorry it's just you asked for squirtle at the time and I forgot to tell you about that I caught pikachu " ash tried to explain it to her in his embarrassment .
" when you get to cerulean city i better get to meet him or her understood ? " her expression made it very clear she was serious.
" yes mum " he agreed
The last thing he wanted to do was to get his mum angry .
" I'm gonna take some time to train squirtle and pikachu before i challenge the gym leader . Even with squirtle having the type advantage , i can't let my guard down and get overconfident as he is a more experienced trainer . Also i think it's getting late , i might sleep at the pokemon center . " he said going over his plan .
Pikachu and squirtle weren't ready to face the gym leader yet anyway .
He hasn't even learned iron tail or brick break.
" just Don't get lost in Mt moon ok ?"
" ok mum , bye " he waved at her.
" bye "
And with that he hanged up the phone .
He spent next few minutes just sitting there watching other people and there pokemons in the pokemon center to past the time.
It wasn't until he saw a news report online that caught his attention.
Kanto Safari zone temporary closed because of potential poachers .
' didn't they already caught that weird poaching group or whatever they were called?' He wondered.
It said that because of a herd of missing tauros the pokemon league is closing the safari zone until they find out what happened to them.
' I just hope it's opened by the time i get there or that other pokemon don't go missing ' he thought.
Hopefully they just lost track of the heard .
It wasn't long before he heard his name being called and went straight to the front desk .
The nurse joy gave him back his pokemon as he clipped them to his belt.
" I'm also looking to stay here because I'm challenge brock . Do you have a spare room " he asked.
" Sure wait just a momment " she said before she went to the back for a few seconds before coming back.
" here you go " she handed him the key .
" thanks " he thanked her as he grabbed the key before making his way upstairs.
He walked past some rooms before he found his .
Using his key , he unlocked the door before finally stepping in.
As he entered the room he stopped at the entrance to take a good look around.
It was a pretty good room , not to bad .
Walking over to the bed , he put his bag down before he unclipped squirtle and pikachu's pokeball and released them.
They looked around at where they were before noticing ash.
" this is where we're going to be staying until we beat brock " he said to them clearing up their confusion.
He took out a bottle of water from his bag and drank a few sips before putting back.
It wasn't dark yet , but they might as well get settled in.

[ next morning ]
The next morning he woke with the sight of pikachu sleeping on his chest and squirtle right beside him .
Ash reached out his hand and scratched the yellow electric type behind the ears .
He then carefully placed pikachu aside near and got up .
' what time is it ? ' he wondered.
He grabbed his rotom phone and looked at the time .
It was still early in the morning , but not too early and more like normal early.
After waking up pikachu and squirtle the three of them went down to the cafeteria to have some breakfast.
Ash had some chocolate filled eevee cakes while pikachu and squirtle got special food that increased the potency of there elements.
Increase pikachu's electricity and squirtle water attacks.
They were also delicious to pokemon as a bonus .
" aaaahh that hit the spot ! What about you guys ? " he asked them .
" pika ! " " squirtle " they cried out happily letting him know they loved their breakfast too.
He smiled at them , happy they were satisfied .
After they put their plates away , ash went up to their rooms to get his bag before they made their way out .
Stepping outside , he closed his eyes as he felt the warm rays of the sun hit his skin.
It felt nice.
" new day guys , let's not waste it " he told them .
" pikachu " " squirtle" the pokemon cried in agreement.
He smiled before he returned them to there pokeballs .
He checked the map for a few seconds before putting it away.
'I'll challenge brock eventually but I have somewhere I want to take look first ' ash thought.
he made his way through the city , taking a look around.
He saw a few things like the poke-mart , the gym and a man selling rocks ?
Not like evolution stones or anything ( sadly ), like regular rocks .
' weirdo ' ash thought as he walked a bit faster and kept his eyes infront of him just incase the man tried to get his attention.
It wasn't long before he made it at his destination.
The pewter museum of science.
He wanted to take a quick visit here before he got started on training pikachu and squirtle.
He walked into the entrance of the building and after paying the entrance fee , he started to take a look around.
' This is incredible ' he thought in wonder as he looked around.
It was filled with things you definitely didn't see everyday in random stores.
Especially the fossils .
Omastar , Aerodactyl and Kabutops fossils.
All of there bones and shells looked preserved .
There also some embers , and a few moon stones .
Those were very rare ,you couldn't just find them anywhere.
He walked to another part of the museum where there were different soil samples .
The samples were from different locations of the region.
From dry areas , wet areas or forests .
' probably to test how stable they are or something ' ash thought.
He wasn't an expert on these things so he could only guess.
On a nearby wall there was a chart on how the universe was created.
The depths of the sea
Different leafs and where in kanto you can find them .
Along with several evolution stones and space charts , the museum was just full of interesting stuff .
Seeing the space sector reminded him about the stories about arcues he and gary read when they were kids .
He still remembered when both of them agreed it was stupid how one of the stories said arcues almost died from a meteor that was about to hit a town.
The alpha pokemon and creator of the whole universe.
Almost dieing to a meteor.

After taking a look at everything in the museum , ash left the building and headed over the route that lead to Mt moon .
He wasn't interested in going there just yet .
He would just use that route for some training.
After arriving there he grabbed pikachu and squirtle's pokeball from his belt and tossed them , releasing the two out.
" pika " " squirtle" they both shouted when they were released.
Ash looked at the two with a smile before getting down to business.
" ok guys , it's time to get serious . Our next big battle is going to be against the gym leader of this city . He isn't like the other trainers we've battled so far , he's stronger and more experienced . If we want to win and get that badge , we're going to have to make sure we are prepared , got it ? " ash explained to his two pokemon with serious expression.
" pikachu ! " " squirtle !" They both nodded , understanding how this was a different battle then the random battles they have been fighting so far.
Especially squirtle.
From what ash had told him this was going to be like the fight with gary . Squirtle couldn't lose and let ash down again.
Pikachu wanted to fight more strong pokemon. He was a bit disappointed couldn't fight the last pokemon of that samurai squirtle fought in viridian forest but if this gym leader was stronger and had more experience than the average trainer than defeating one of his pokemon should make up for it .
" Alright let's see-" ash pulled out his rotom phone and started to look up information about brock .
Brock Harrison the gym leader of pewter city inherited the gym from his parents . Mainly uses a geodude and an onix for beginner trainers who only have one badge. Has a good gym record although the gym had one incident in the past where the sprinkler system was set off during a battle after getting hit by an attack. No one was hurt but the sprinklers were changed to prevent them from being effected by pokemon attacks . Other than that , there has been no incidents and the pewter city gym is still a perfect place for a trainers first gym.
" ok so he has an onix and a geodude , that onix will be hard to deal with without a plan even with type advantage " ash said looking at brock's pokemon.
' from what it says about his gym record , i should be able to defeat brock if i come up with a good enough plan ' ash thought looking at the pewter city gym info .
He wasn't like the other trainers ash had battled on his way here . He couldn't let his guard down or get overconfident.
' pikachu will need to start working on iron tail and break break , but that won't be enough . He's gonna need to focus on invading and countering any attacks that come his way ' especially against rock type attacks.
' and as for squirtle , he'll need to focus slightly more on defense . I know i could send pikachu against onix because he's faster , but onix is just too bulky for pikachu. All onix needs is one good hit and pikachu might be done for . Also squirtle is stronger and has more experience . Can't take the risk of pikachu going down against onix without doing any damage and squirtle lossing because his fight with geodude ' ash simply couldn't take that risk.
" ok pikachu , your going up against geodude. use your speed to try dodging or countering incoming attacks if everything goes to plan and you defeat him than I'll keep you in to try and do more damage to onix but that will be squirtles job , got it ? " ash asked the yellow electric type.
Pikachu nodded with determination.
" good , squirtle like i told pikachu your going to be up against onix . Stick to long ranged attacks like water gun and bubble as onix's defense is to strong for physical attacks , unless you have no choice . Try to utilize withdraw whenever your about to take damage you know you can't avoid " ash told his starter.
Squirtle nodded , his expression completely serious.
Ash smiled at his pokemon , before laying down the preparations they needed for the gym battle.
" ok now pikachu I want you to start working on iron tail and brick break. Start with iron tail first and move on to brick break afterwards. We'll also try to build up your physical strength to make learning them easier " ash said to the electric type before moving towards squirtle.
" squirtle your going to be learning rapid spin and continue to master your water type moves " he said .
" the reason i want you to learn rapid spin is based on something that happened in your fight with pinsir , remember when he threw you away while you were still using water gun ? " ash asked his starter.
Squirtle nodded , still remembering the fealing of spiraling through the air while still using water gun.
" well when you were thrown through the air , your water gun made a spiral like form that i was thinking we could try and use in battle " ash told the water type.
If it could help them in winning against brock he would take it !
" squirtle " the starter was confused a little bit by what ash was planning but if it helped them win , he would give it a try .
" that's why your going to learn rapid spin , to make re-creating that move much easier " ash said .
Ash looked around before walking over and grabbing a nearby rock and brought it over infront of pikachu before putting it down.
" ok pikachu , your gonna be using this rock as base for learning iron tail . After learning iron tail you'll get started on brick break " ash said to pikachu.
Iron tail turned the user's tail completely into metal , despite this most pokemon don't have trouble with any weight of their tail when in use .
Brick break was a little bit more simpler. It was a fighting type move that was capable of destroying barriers like light screen and reflect.
Brock's pokemon didn't know any barrier moves , but it was better for pikachu to know more than one super effective move against brock's ground types.
" pika " pikachu nodded , eager to get stronger enough to help defeat brock .
He then stood directly facing the rock , glaring at it before swinging his tail at the rock to get started on learning the steel type move .
Ash turned his attention over to squirtle.
" ok squirtle i want you to start working on rapid spin first . Not just for the spiral technique but for more possible defense against incoming rock type attacks . We'll work on bite afterwards , those two will replace tackle and tail whip " he told the starter.
Squirtle nodded before as he walked away to start training.
And so they began.
Pikachu spent time trying to learn iron tail first . Ash had given him instructions on the move he seached online.
How to channel the element through his tail , how hard his tail needed to hit the rock and how fast he needed to swing it .
Squirtle had started on rapid spin. Ash had told him to focus on mastering the move before they moved into the technique.
The movement , velocity and balance were all very important .
Meanwhile ash had been researching brock's battles online to see if there was anything that could make winning easier .
He also planned to make pikachu work on his speed and to keep improving on double team.
And even though bite wasn't going to be the best help against brock's rock types , it was better than tackle.
He also wondered if he should teach him icy wind but decided on sticking to only two moves .
Ash also had squirtle train to improve water gun and bubble . Mainly try increase his accuracy and power by having squirtle try and hit pikachu.
This was also great training for the electric type to prepare against any incoming rock attacks.
Pikachu would also work with his double team to try and make more copies.
The electric type would need to be ready to react and change position in an instant !
Iron tail was a success . It took two days for pikachu to learn it with the proper training , which was great considering some pokemon took weeks to learn moves that weren't their types.
He then moved on to brick break but would come back later to master the steel type move .
Squirtle had also finished learning rapid spin and was training with the technique that ash hasn't came up with a name yet .
Squirtle would use water gun while using rapid spin and create a swirl of water that acts both defensive AND offensive .
It was not easy to practice , especially with how ash didn't exactly know where he was reaching.
But with training and patience it all came together. They even had pikachu try and test it by attacking squirtle , in facts that's how they learned the mistakes they were making.
It had not been easy and ash doubted himself on more than several occasions on if he was wasting his time but it all worked out.
Hopefully squirtle in the future will learn how to use the technique without rapid spin.
Ash had also brought some small weights for the two. They weren't expensive or big , but just for squirtle and pikachu to try and improve their physical strengths.
He got them from a trainer store in pewter city using some of the money he earned from battling the trainers viridian forest and route 1 .
It had made it easier for pikachu to learn and master brick break and iron tail , along with increase his speed.
Squirtle's water attacks had also gotten stronger and he's gained more control over the spiral counter technique .
The water starter had also learned bite . It was hard at first , The attack was different than just having a pokemon bitting something.
But squirtle eventually learned it and even though it might not do much against onix , it's better than tackle.

Ash watched his two pokemon as they took a break from resent training.
Grabbing his rotom phone he scanned them to see how much they had improved after their previous improvements .
Squirtle
Moves : bite , rapid spin , water gun , withdraw , bubble.
Pikachu
Moves : thunder shock , thunder wave , quick attack , iron tail , brick break , double team.
They've been training for a week and their progress is really showing .
They have also improved their physical strength and are now much stronger too.
Pikachu can now make 4 copies of using double team and has gotten faster . Thunder shock also got stronger because while they don't need it for the gym , they should at least start improving now .
Iron tail and brick break are now officially mastered . Ash had made pikachu practice in not just learning to get the hang of the attacks but to know where to swing and how hard to hit .
The electric type had also been training on dodging attacks with squirtle .
Speaking of the starter....
His water attacks had increased in power , control and accuracy.
The counter spiral technique had really worked out . Which was good because ash has been afraid it would be for nothing.
' I still need a name for that ' ash thought.
Bite had been mastered .
Squirtle's color had even changed to a slightly darker blue . Which ment he was close to evolving .
Not now obviously , but if he had to guess squirtle could evolve either at Mt moon or after misty gym , It was had to tell .
But Anyway .
' combining their increase in physical strength and mastery of moves I'd say this training was a success . All that's left to do now is see how well it helps us win the badge ' he thought about their progress.
Ash put his rotom phone away and walk over to them .
" great job guys , we all that training I'd say we're ready for brock " he told them walked up to them .
" pikachu "
" squirt "
They just as happy as he was .
" you guys still remember the plan right ? Pikachu , you'll use your speed to invade most of geodude's attacks before going in for the hit with iron tail and brick break . Squirtle , you'll stick to long ranged attacks when battling onix and try not to get to close . You bite if you have to but that won't do a lot do stay away . squirtle will be back up just incase pikachu is defeated by geodude but hopefully it doesn't come to that " ash told them.
They nodded at ash's words with determined looks in their eyes .
' Alright were just about ready '
All that's left to do now is register for a gym battle at the gym .

He stepped into the gym as the door opened looking around for a bit , before going straight to the receptionist.
" can I help you ? " she looked up and asked as he arrived.
" I'd like to register for a gym battle " he said to her .
She shortly typed in something before looking at him.
" name ? "
" ash ketchum "
" Home town ? "
" Pallet town "
" How many badges do you have ? "
" zero "
" Is this your first time battling at a gym ? "
" Yes "
" At what time would you like to register your battle ? "
" Tomorrow late morning would be nice "
she typed down on her computer after every answer he gave her .
After a few minutes of typing she stopped.
" I've registered your match for tomorrow late morning. Typical matches are 2 on 2 .p Please don't be late or your register will be expired , understood ? " she told him seriously.
" yes " ash answered one last time before before made his way to the door and left the gym.
As the door closed ash breath a sigh of release.
' this is it , no turning back now ' he thought as grabbed the straps of his bag and started to make his way to the pokemon center.
' we've trained , we've made plans and we're prepared . I can't let my team down , i have stay focused and keep my guard up ' he thought as arrived at red building.
He made inside before going straight to the front desk and gave her his pokeballs.
As usual , the nurse joy took them and ash had wait until they called his name .
As ash was sitting there scrolling through his rotom phone to past the time , his attention caught on to a bunch of news stuff.

- mysterious individuals attack small town in kalos . The kalos pokemon League reports they are taking care of the problem .
- sky cult dismantled . Crazy cult that worships the sky is taken down by heonn police . Leader's words apon being arrested were " the sky will rise again " .
" the sky will rise again ? " ash read questioningly at the article.
People were getting crazier and crazier these days .
He suddenly heard his name being called by the nurse joy .
Putting the device away , he made his way to the front desk and collecting his pokemon.
" good luck on your gym battle tomorrow " the nurse joy told him , now already knowing his reason for being here.
" thanks " ash thanked her with a smile before making his way upstairs to his room.

[ the next morning ]
Ash stood infront of the gym with with pikachu and squirtle besides him.
" ok guys this it . No matter what happens , I want you guys to know that I'm proud of you and to do your best " ash said as he looked at them.
" pikachu "
" squirtle "
They both cried out , ready for whatever they have to face in this battle.
Squirtle was ready the make up for his loss with gary's bulbasaur by helping ash defeat the strongest trainer they've met so far .
Pikachu was ready to help ash in a really important battle that wasn't some random bug trainer.
Ash smiled at them before returning both pokemon to their pokeballs and putting them back on his belt .
He turned and faced the rock shaped gym before entering.

Ash made his way over the receptionist.
" my name is ash ketchum , I'm here for the gym battle I registered yesterday " he told the woman.
She typed in her computer for few seconds. calling someone on her desk phone , before hanging up the phone.
" yes ash ketchum , you can go in " she said.
" thank you " ash thanked her before making his way inside battle field room.

As he walked in the first thing he noticed was the rocky battle field at the center of the room.
There were stands at the side of the room to where spectator could watched .
It had a few people in it , not a lot but a few .
And there standing on the other side was brock.
Ash took in a few deep breaths and made his way to the field below.
Stopping at his side , he stood straight.
Ready to win his first gym badge.
" ash ketchum ? " brock asked.
" yes " ash answered firmly .
Brock looked at the referee and nodded.
The referee seeing this , stepped foward between them with his flag raised in the air .
" This is an official gym battle between ash ketchum of pallet town and brock Harrison of pewter for boulder badge , the challenger is the only one allowed to switched , are both trainers ready ? " the referee asked them.
Brock nodded his head with his pokeball in hand .
Ash finished setting his rotom phone to record a video the whole battle , before letting it go as it flew up to a corner of the battle feild as he grabbed pikachu's pokeball from his belt .
He looked at the referee and nodded.
The referee saw this and started the match .
" let the battle begin " he said as he brought his flag down before taking his leave .
And the battle began.
Brock threw out his pokeball and with a burst of light , it revealed a geodude.
The rock type pokemon appeared on the other side of the battlefield , levitating under a mysterious unknown power that many still couldn't figure out to this day .
It let out a battle a battle cry facing towards whatever pokemon ash was about to bring out.
Ash threw out his pokeball and out poped out pikachu.
" pika ! " the electric rodent cried ready for his opponent.
Brock seeing this had a look on face that said he had been expecting ash's choices .
" geodude tackle " he said with a tone in his voice that said he had done this before .
Geodude charged at the yellow electric type.
" Dodge it " ash shouted at pikachu .
Pikachu quickly dodged the floating rock , letting it charge past him.
" now hit it with brick break ! " ash quickly capitalized off geodude's exposed back .
Just as he had done through out his training , pikachu got into position before running straight at geodude. He brought one of his hands out with an orange glow on it before hitting geodude straight from behind.
Brock was taken by surprise for bit by the strategic command . Most trainers just run here without any plan whatsoever.
But he not only taught pikachu a super effective move , but he clearly planed that brock would have geodude charged at pikachu without any hint a precaution.
' looks like I'm not dealing with a normal trainer ' he thought with interest.
" so you thought your pikachu a move that's super effective against my pokemon. Impressive , but it's going to take more than type advantage to beat me " brock declared with a steel gaze .
" geodude rock throw " he called out to his pokemon.
Geodude hearing the order , punched the ground with force sending multiple flying in different directions.
" Invade them with quick attack " ash told the electric type.
Pikachu's body glowed with a thin white light before he zoomed out of the way , invading the incoming rocks .
Brock seeing pikachu was busy , went in for the offense.
" geodude rollout ! " he shouted
Geodude crossed its arms before he started to roll towards pikachu at high speed .
Ash seeing this was quick to react .
" pikachu use iron tail to counter the rollout " he shouted.
Pikachu hearing ash , acted quickly .
His eyes locked in on the incoming geodude , his tail turned metallic and in an instant , he started to run towards the rock type before he leaped upward and brought his tail right down on the rock pokemon .
The attack slammed on geodude stopping the rollout and sending it straight back like a baseball .
Geodude as sent flying , hitting several rocks that covered the feild as he flew before hit the corner wall of the arena.
' iron tail too " brock realized as geodude got up from the hit .
Damage visible .
" geodude use bulldoze " he said.
Trying to ignore the hit from iron tail , geodude raised his fists in the air before slamming the into the ground.
A powerful shockwave rippled across the field. Hitting pikachu too fast for ash to fully warn the electric type.
Pikachu cried out as he was hit with the attack and fell to the ground.
' damn it i wasn't expecting bulldoze . I'm gonna need to to lower his chances of hitting pikachu. " ash thought as tried to think about different strategies.
He knew the chances of brock having geodude use bulldoze again was low . Not because the field couldn't handle it , these gyms were built so that even an earthquake from brock's steelix wouldn't even be felt from the stadium. Not to mention an energy force field that make sure no attack from either of the two pokemon would hurt anyone.
' using 2 moves in row is either desperate , naive or in rare cases strategic with moves like fury cutter '
Brock just looked , patiently waiting for ash's next move with a silent smile .
" use double team pikachu " ash told the yellow rodent.
Now fully back on his feet , pikachu brushed off some dirt , used double team and in a few seconds 4 more copies of himself appeared.
" geodude use mud slap " brock told his pokemon.
Geodude scratched his hands against the ground before launching multiple clumps of mud at pikachu.
" Dodge them ! " ash shouted.
Pikachu using quick attack , invaded every mud slap thrown at him as he zoomed towards the rock type .
Most took out 3 of his copies , but there was still 1 left as he closed in .
" pikachu use iron tail " ash gave him to command.
His tail glowed metallic as he leaped into the air.
" geodude use defense curl ! " brock told his pokemon in panic.
Geodude was already using the move before brock finished his sentence .
And just in time as pikachu came down with iron tail at full force .
The attack hit the rock type at full power . Creating a miniature cloud of dust around the two .
Defense curl had managed to reduce the damage geodude would gotten if it acted just a few seconds slower.
Pikachu leaped away as the dust cleared , revealing the geodude.
Brock being the one who raised his pokemon , saw that he couldn't go on much longer.
' I need to end this now ! ' he thought worryingly.
" geodude use bulldoze " brock called out.
Geodude raised his hands once again and slammed them into the ground sending a shock to travel through the battle field .
But pikachu and ash were ready this time .
" now pikachu jump ! " ash shouted.
Not needed to be told twice , pikachu jumped over the attack as it passed under him before he landed back on his feet again .
" now finish him off with brick break " ash told pikachu.
Pikachu shot foward and ran at geodude at full speed.
" try and stop him with rock throw ! " brock desperately.
Geodude once again slammed his hands into the ground forcing rocks to scater across the field.
Pikachu without needing ash's orders , invaded every single one of them with ability.
" quick use-" but before brock could order another command.
Pikachu struck.
He launched towards geodude with his right hand glowing an orange color before he brought it down on the rock type .
It hit the rock pokemon hard and sent it flying into one of the walls of the battle field before it fell down on the ground with swirls in its eyes.
After a few seconds the enegy field temporarily deactivated as the referee entered the battle field .
He went up to the geodude and after a few seconds he raised his flag .
" Geodude has fainted and is unable to battle, the winner is pikach " the referee said raising his flag towards towards ash.
Some people in the stands were surprised. They expecting brock's geodude to easily beat the pikachu , even when geodude fell they waited for it to get back up until the referee announced it was unable to battle.
Brock stared at his fainted pokemon for a few seconds before snapping out of the shock .
He grabbed geodude's pokeball and returned it to his pokeball.
Meanwhile ash clenched his fist in excitement.
' I took down his geodude ! Ok stay calm ash, no need get overexcited , you still have one more pokemon to defeat and it's the main reason most trainers lose , this isn't over ' ash thought as he to calm down.
Brock put geodude pokeball back on his belt before grabbing another one and facing ash.
" I have to say I'm impressed. Most trainer who come here either rely on type advantage or just run here without any plan . The last trainer that came here with a pikachu challenged me 3 times before he left and never came back . Your better than him , but let's see how you deel with THIS ! " brock yelled the last part as he threw the pokeball in his hand .
The pokeball burst open and came out his signature onix . The one pokemon that stops most new trainers completely.
Despite not being the biggest onix it still towered over them with ease.
" onix use mud sport " brock told the rock snake pokemon.
' mud sport ' ash thought questionably.
The rock type draged it's tail along the ground and threw patches of mud across the field.
The mud hit pikachu and even though it didn't actually damage the electric type , it felt very annoying.
" now tackle " brock said
" quick dodge " ash tried to call out but the mud made it hard to react fast enough.
Onix's tackle hit pikachu , the force of the rock snake pokemon's attack hit , sending the electric type flying before he came to a halt .
" you ok pikachu ? " ash asked
Pikachu struggled to for a few seconds but eventually managed to stand up .
Ash knowing pikachu won't lady much longer decided to wrap things up and have pikachu land a few hits while he can.
" pikachu use iron tail ! " ash told him.
Pikachu's tail turned metallic as he ran towards onix .
" onix use harden " brock said .
As pikachu jumped at onix , it's body glowed a similar shine as pikachu's tail .
Iron tail connected but harden stopped the hit dead cold.
" finish this with bulldoze onix " brock said confidently.
As pikachu jumped away , onix slammed his tail on the ground.
The wave of power swept across the battle field.
Pikachu having no time to dodge was hit before he could do anything .
" pika ! " pikachu cried out as he was hit with the attack.
He was immediately knocked down by the move . He tried to stand back up again but unfortunately couldn't as he fell down once again with swirls in his eye's.
The referee raised his flag towards ash's position.
" ash ketchum's pikachu is unable to battle , the winner is brock's onix , challenger please send out your final pokemon " the referee announced.
Ash sighed as he returned pikachu.
" you did great out there bud thanks a million" he spoke to pikachu through his pokeball.
As he put pikachu's pokeball back on his belt, he took a deep breath .
' this is it ! We're both down to our last pokemons . If there's anyone who can help me win this it's squirtle , no question ' he thought as he grabbed squirtle's pokeball.
He looked at it for a few seconds before he drew back his arm.
" Squirtle i choose you " ash said as he through the pokeball.
It sailed through the air before it popped open with a burst of light , revealing the water type starter.
" squirtle ! " he said at his release.
" it's all on you squirtle " ash shouted at him.
Squirtle looked at ash and nodded before turning to face his opponent with a determined glare .
He would not fall.
Brock looked at squirtle.
' that must be his starter ! If he's anything like that pikachu this isn't going to be easy ' brock thought.
"Use tackle " brock said .
" use withdraw " ash told squirtle.
onix charged and headed straight to the water type as squirtle quickly tucked into his shell .
As onix hit squirtle , it sended the starter skipping across field .
After a few seconds he eventually came to a stop.
He came out of his shell and glared at his opponent.
Barely any scratches on him.
" now use bubble " ash said .
Squirtle took aim before he shot multiple light blue bubbles directly at onix in a small swam.
The attack landed forcing onix to recoil at the water type move , being four times weak to water .
As the attack ended brock saw that it did visible damage to onix. It was a water type so that sounded obvious but that move had more control and power than most other trainer's pokemon had.
" shake off those tiny bubbles and charge in straight with tackle " brick told onix .
Onix shaked off the water attack and charged at squirtle.
" Dodge it quick ! " ash shouted at the water type.
Squirtle jumped out of the way , bearly avoiding the charging rock snake as it zoomed past him.
Landing on his stomach , squirtle instantly got up .
Not willing give his opponent an opening and attack while his down .
" use water gun " ash yelled.
Squirtle taking advantage of onix's blind spot, fired a strong water gun at the rock type.
The water gun blasted onix at the back of his head catching it unprepared.
" Bulldoze " brock told his pokemon simply.
Trying to push against the attack , onix raised his tail into the air before bringing it down.
The wave traveled across the battlefield until it eventually reached squirtle.
Hit by the attack , squirtle was forced to stop the water gun before he fell down .
" now use rock throw " brock said , taking the chance to attack squirtle while he was wide open.
" use the counter technique we practiced to shield yourself " ash shouted to his starter .
Hearing ash , squirtle immediately retreated back into his shell before using rapid spin to rotate at high speed while shooting water gun out if his shell.
Much to brock's shock and surprise , squirtle's actions created a spiral tornado of water .
Onix used tail launch the rocks at squirtle .
But as the rocks flew towards the starter , they were completely deflected by the water tornado much to ash's happiness.
" yes ! It worked " Ash shouted in joy.
Brock's mind however was in shock .
' what the heck was that ?! ' he had never seen anything like that in all his years as a gym leader.
Who was this kid ?
" Use bulldoze and get past that counter sheild " brock yelled at onix .
Onix slammed his tail on the ground sending the shockwave at squirtle .
It passed the counter shield going straight under it and it hit squirtle directly.
Losing concentration and position squirtle was unable to keep up the technique and fell.
" You ok squirtle ? " ash asked.
Squirtle stood up before nodding at ash .
" ok use water gun " ash told him.
" Dodge it " brock countered.
Squirtle fired the water gun at onix , but the rock snake dodged by moving his head away just in time .
" wrap him up with bind " brock told onix
Onix moves towards squirtle at high speed and before squirtle could even try move out the way onix already has the water type in his grip .
" bubble aim for his face " ash said , thinking quickly.
With his shell protecting him from most of the presure , squirtle fired a lots of bubbles at the rock/ground types face .
This wasn't a few , this was a whole swarm .
The attack didn't just hit onix in the face at full force but had the bubbles block his vision, forcing him to let go off squirtle.
" now use bite " ash kept up.
He knew this would have little effect but any damage was better than no damage at all .
Upon being released , squirtle following ash's orders and went straight for the hit .
Bitting the rock snakes tail , onix still recovering from the water attack let out a scream of pain.
Some who were watching were surprised . It wasn't everyday someone pushed onix this much in battle even with type advantage.
But back to the battle.
" shake him off " brock yelled urgently.
Trying to ignore the effects of the previous water attack onix tried to shake off the turtle.
While it was made of rocks it could still feel pain.
It managed to throw the starter away after a few swings of its tail sending fly across the battlefield.
" now follow up with tackle " brock said not wanting to give him a chance to recover.
Onix rushed at squirtle who was still standing up and slammed into the water starter at full force before he could fully stand up .
" Squirtle " the water type cried as it was hit and sent flying before he came to a stop .
" squirtle ! You Allright ? " ash asked worry .
Much to his relief squirtle managed to get back on his feet again.
" squirt " he said glaring at the onixwho looked worn out from the battle.
Ash couldn't help but smile at his Starter.
" good now let's finish this " he said with a determined smile .
Squirtle looked back and grinned .
" I couldn't agreed more " brock replied back with a smile .
This was the most fun he's had in a battle since that kid with the bulbasaur.
" onix use rock throw " brock ordered
" counter shield " ash said using brock's own description of the move .
' i kinda like it ' ash thought about the name.
Like before squirtle retreated back into his shell before using rapid spin + water gun to use the technique.
The water spiral twister blocked the incoming rocks .
Deflecting each one of them and protecting the starter .
"Onix use Bulldoze " brock ordered like last time.
" use your water gun to push yourself off the ground " ash countered with quickly.
As onix slammed his tail on the ground , squirtle stopped spinning for a second and focused his water gun downwards and shot himself through the air , avoiding the bulldoze before landing there on the ground .
" now finish him with water gun " ash told squirtle confidently.
It was time to end this .
" harden ! " brock said with panic in his voice .
Why did he say harden ?
Why not tackle ?
Or rock throw ?
As good as these options are it didn't matter.
Squirtle taking the chance to end this battle , fired the water gun immediately as powerfull as he can.
Onix , tired and exhausted barely had enough enegy to try and use the move before it hit him at full force.
He let put one more cry of pain before falling to the ground.
Everyone froze as the referee brought down the shield after a few minutes and went to check the battlefield.
After checking the rock/ground type he raised one of his flags into the air .
" Onix is unable to battle , squirtle wins . Since gym leader brock is out of pokemon , that makes challenger ash ketchum of pallet town the winner " the referee announced.
There was a small surprise in the crowd , some knew brock hasn't lost a battle since the guy with the bulbasaur . But before that he didn't lose often.
Was everyone in pallet town strong trainers ?
It took a few seconds for it to register to ash that he won .
' we won ' ash thought a bit shocked.
" we won " he shouted at at squirtle , who ran towards him before jumping up at him in a hug .
" squirt ! " the starter also celebrated.
They did it !
They won their first gym badge !
As ash and squirtle both lauphed in joy at winning their first gym battle , brock approached onix who lied there on the ground defeated.
" you did fantastic onix , get some rest " he said the the rock snake pokemon before returning him back his pokemon.
Both ash and squirtle looked up as brock approached.
" Well I'm Impressed , when i first saw your pikachu i thought it was going to be just like evey other battle I've had before my last one , especially since the last trainer that came here with a pikachu lost to me twice before never comming back . But you , you were prepared you trained , I haven't seen a trainer like since a boy with a bulbasaur that challenged me not to long ago " brock said , clipping onix's pokeball on his belt .
That got ash's attention .
" was he from pallet town too ? " ash asked with curiosity.
Brock's answer confirmed his suspions.
" yeah i think he was , did you know him ? " brock asked .
' gary ' ash thoughtbefore answering.
"yeah he's my rival " ashtold him.
This brought a smile to brocks face .
" That makes so much sence now , anyway here's your badge as official proof that you defeated the pewter city gym " brock said as he gave ash the badge .
With a huge smile on his face , ash grabbed the badge and held it up to his face to get a proper look at it before reaching back into his bag and taking out his badge case and putting his badge into it the case .
" so your heading through Mt moon next ? " brock asked .
" yeah , but I'm thinking about staying here at least until tomorrow before i go " ash said after putting the badge case in the bag .
" that's nice , be safe though , mt moon is dangerous if you get lost " brock warned him.
Ash nodded before he and squirtle made their way towards the door .
As brock watched him go he had a fealing that ash would be more than just another trainer.
' there's great potential in that kid ' brock thought as ash left .
