Chapter 66: Rebekah's Awakening - Part 2

POV: Caroline Forbes

Taking a thousand-year-old vampire shopping wasn't on Caroline's bucket list, but here she is at Mystic Grill with Rebekah Mikaelson, explaining smartphones.

"It's a phone, a camera, and a computer all in one device," Caroline explains, demonstrating Instagram on her phone. "You can talk to anyone globally, take photos, access all human knowledge instantly."

Rebekah stares at the phone like it's a magical artifact. "The last time I was conscious, we were just getting reliable electricity everywhere. This is..."

"Magic," Caroline supplies. "Technology magic, but magic."

They're sitting at the Grill's best table—Caroline specifically chose public location to keep Rebekah under observation while building rapport. It's working better than expected. Rebekah's surprisingly easy to talk to when she's not threatening murder.

"What did you expect from a thousand-year-old vampire?" Rebekah asks, scrolling through Caroline's phone with fascination.

"More murder-y," Caroline admits honestly.

Rebekah laughs, genuine and unguarded. "Fair. Most of us are. But I'm tired of violence, Caroline Forbes. I've had centuries of it. Right now, I just want to understand the modern world before my brother wakes up and potentially destroys it."

Matt brings their drinks—water for Caroline, bourbon for Rebekah—and manages not to stare at the gorgeous stranger who's apparently Caroline's new friend.

"You're handling supernatural revelations well," Rebekah observes after Matt leaves. "Most humans either panic or try bargaining for immortality."

"I've had months to adjust," Caroline replies. "My boyfriend coordinates supernatural alliances, my mom got cancer-healing powers, and my best friend is a witch who can hurt Originals. Normal left the building a while ago."

"Your boyfriend," Rebekah repeats thoughtfully. "Sam Barton. The human who defeated my brother. You love him."

It's not a question.

"With everything I am," Caroline confirms.

"And he loves you," Rebekah continues. "I can see it in how his clones position themselves—always between you and threats, always ready to protect. It's sweet."

"It's tactical," Caroline corrects, then pauses. "But also sweet. Sam thinks in strategy, but he feels deeply. He just expresses it through protection rather than words."

Rebekah's expression softens with something approaching envy. "I've been looking for that for a thousand years. Love that's genuine instead of compelled or manipulated. You're lucky."

Before Caroline can respond, Stefan enters the Grill.

The temperature in the room seems to drop several degrees as Stefan and Rebekah lock eyes across the space.

"Stefan Salvatore," Rebekah says, her voice carrying emotions Caroline can't quite identify. "Still so serious."

Stefan approaches their table with the careful movements of someone navigating a minefield. "Rebekah. You look... exactly the same."

"Vampire benefit," Rebekah replies. "You look different though. More tortured. Less fun than our Chicago days."

Elena, who'd been studying at another table, storms out when she sees Stefan and Rebekah talking. Caroline mentally curses—she'd forgotten about the Stefan-Rebekah history from the 1920s.

"Trouble in paradise?" Rebekah asks Stefan with slight satisfaction. "How delicious."

"Let's not poke that drama bear," Caroline intervenes quickly, recognizing explosive situation forming. "Rebekah, want to see more of the modern fashion options?"

Rebekah allows herself to be redirected, but Caroline catches her watching Stefan as they leave.

"Great," Caroline thinks. "One more complication to manage before Klaus wakes up."

They spend the afternoon touring Mystic Falls—showing Rebekah the town square's renovations, the high school's technology upgrades, even Caroline's house where Liz greets them with professional courtesy that doesn't quite hide wariness about entertaining an Original vampire.

"Your mother is healed," Rebekah observes after Liz leaves to answer a work call. "Sam's gift?"

"He gave up his regeneration power to cure her cancer," Caroline confirms. "Permanent sacrifice to save someone he barely knew because she's my mother."

"And you wonder why I think his love is genuine," Rebekah says quietly.

As sunset approaches, they end up at Sam's estate. He's coordinating clone positions with military precision, preparing for Klaus's imminent awakening.

"Caroline's lovely," Rebekah tells Sam, settling into his study like she owns it. "Genuine, unlike most humans I've met over the centuries. And you—you're planning to control my brother through kindness and strategy instead of violence."

"Klaus wants family, freedom, and respect," Sam replies. "I can help him get all three if he doesn't slaughter innocent people in the process."

"Nik's complicated," Rebekah warns. "He's been hurt so many times that he hurts others preemptively. Our father rejected him, our mother cursed him, every ally eventually betrays him. Trust isn't something he does easily."

"Then we'll prove trustworthiness through action," Sam says. "Starting with waking him to find his siblings supporting peace instead of demanding war."

Rebekah extends her hand formally. "You have one Original's support, Sam Barton. Convince Nik that cooperation serves his interests, and I'll back you. But if you betray him—if you use his desire for family against him—I'll kill everyone you care about before ending you slowly."

"Fair terms," Sam agrees, shaking her hand.

[REBEKAH RELATIONSHIP: TENTATIVE ALLY]

[CAROLINE-REBEKAH FRIENDSHIP: ESTABLISHED]

[LEVEL 30: 3,700/4,000 TO LEVEL 31]

After Rebekah leaves, Caroline finds Sam on the estate porch watching stars.

"Klaus wakes tomorrow," he says without looking at her.

"I know."

"Everything we've built either survives or burns based on one conversation with a thousand-year-old hybrid who's perfected paranoia and cruelty."

Caroline sits beside him, taking his hand. "Then we make sure it survives. We have Rebekah's support, Elijah's diplomacy, Bonnie's power, and your tactical genius. That's more than anyone's ever had negotiating with Klaus."

"It might not be enough," Sam admits quietly.

"It has to be enough," Caroline replies firmly. "Because the alternative is everyone dead, and I refuse to accept that outcome."

Sam pulls her close, and they sit in silence under indifferent stars, gathering strength for tomorrow's battle.

Inside the estate, Sam's five clones deploy to their assigned positions across Mystic Falls—Mind Shield with Elena, Defensive Shield with Caroline's house, Magic Absorption with Bonnie, Sensory monitoring the Grill, Strength stationed at the boarding house.

Tomorrow, the monster wakes.

And somehow, they have to convince him not to destroy everything.
