Chapter 71: Katherine's Revenge - Part 1
POV: Sam Barton
The attacks hit at 9:47 PM across three separate locations, and my Sensory clone's warning comes with the kind of multi-directional urgency that means Katherine Pierce has finally decided to remind us she exists.
"Jeremy Gilbert's under assault at the Gilbert house," my Sensory clone reports, his awareness spanning across Mystic Falls like spider web detecting vibrations. "Three compelled vampires breaking through the front door. Matt Donovan's being attacked at the Grill by five compelled humans. And Caroline's car has been sabotaged—her brakes are failing, highway curve in ninety seconds."
I'm at my estate when the alerts hit, and the tactical calculus is immediate and brutal: I have six clones, but they're distributed across town in surveillance positions. I can't be everywhere simultaneously, which is exactly what Katherine's counting on.
"Phasing, get to Jeremy," I command, already running for my car. "Intangibility means compelled vampires can't touch you. Extract him to safety."
My Phasing clone blurs through solid matter, traveling in straight line through buildings and obstacles toward the Gilbert house.
"Defensive Shield, reinforce Caroline's car remotely. Project barrier around the brake system—contain the failure."
The clone's golden energy streams across town, my enhanced MP regeneration barely keeping pace with the expenditure.
[MP: 825 → 675 → REGENERATING]
I call Liz Forbes while driving toward the Grill at speeds that would normally get me arrested if my girlfriend's mother wasn't the sheriff.
"Matt's under attack," I tell her. "Five compelled humans at the Grill. I'm three minutes out."
"I'm closer," Liz replies immediately, and I hear her patrol car's siren activate. "Keep Caroline safe. I'll handle Matt."
My phone buzzes with incoming video call—Katherine's number, because apparently she's decided psychological warfare requires visual confirmation.
Her face fills the screen, smiling with the kind of satisfaction that comes from centuries of perfecting cruelty.
"Hello, Sam," Katherine purrs. "Enjoying my coordination exercise? I'm testing a hypothesis: can the Clone Sovereign actually protect everyone, or are you just very good at managing selective priorities?"
"What do you want?" I demand, my car screeching around corners.
"I want you to choose," Katherine replies, her smile sharpening. "Matt Donovan is currently being beaten to death by five compelled humans. Caroline Forbes's brakes will fail completely in forty-five seconds on that highway curve. You can save one. Choose."
My heart slams against my ribs—she's forcing trolley problem ethics through real-time violence.
But Katherine made one critical miscalculation: she underestimated Liz Forbes's response time and my ability to coordinate distributed defense.
"I choose both," I reply, and hang up.
My Defensive Shield clone wraps Caroline's entire car in protective barrier just as her brakes fail completely. The vehicle careens toward the curve, but golden energy absorbs the impact as she crashes through the guardrail. The barrier holds, suspending her car above the ravine in shimmering cage of supernatural protection.
I arrive at the Grill to find Liz has already incapacitated four of the compelled humans with tactical precision—taser, pepper spray, and her enhanced Regeneration making her remarkably effective against mundane threats. The fifth attacker flees when he sees me.
Matt's bloodied but conscious, and Liz is already calling for ambulance.
"Jeremy?" I ask my Phasing clone through our mental connection.
"Secure," he reports. "Extracted him through the basement wall. The compelled vampires are confused about target disappearing mid-attack."
All three attacks prevented. Katherine's coordination exercise failed.
But the message she left at each location—carved into walls, written in blood, spray-painted on surfaces—makes her intent perfectly clear:
"You can't save them all. Eventually, you'll fail, and I'll be there to watch you break."
The emergency alliance meeting happens at the Salvatore Boarding House at midnight, everyone exhausted but alive.
"Katherine's declaring psychological warfare," I explain to the assembled group—Caroline, Elena, Bonnie, Stefan, Damon, Tyler, Liz, even Klaus and Rebekah who've become invested in alliance stability. "She's not trying to kill people directly. She's trying to prove I can't protect everyone, make me paranoid and stretched thin."
"Classic Katherine," Klaus observes, sprawling in his usual chair with bourbon. "She's been running from me for five centuries by making everyone around her look vulnerable. Force them to choose between bad options, then exploit the choice."
"So what's our counter-strategy?" Caroline asks, gripping my hand tightly enough that I feel bones shift.
"Distributed defense instead of centralized protection," I reply, already mentally mapping out the network. "My clones can't be everywhere, so we build redundancy. Everyone gets a partner, communication protocols, emergency escape routes. We create a system where Katherine can't isolate anyone."
Liz pulls out her police tablet, already creating spreadsheets. "I'll coordinate patrol schedules. We integrate supernatural defense with conventional law enforcement—my deputies won't know why, but they'll provide visible presence that complicates Katherine's attacks."
Bonnie adds her magical contribution: "I can create alert wards. Anyone in the alliance network gets magical early warning if they're targeted."
"I can provide hybrid backup," Tyler offers, his new supernatural strength making him valuable muscle. "Katherine's fast, but I'm faster now."
Klaus watches this coordination with something approaching approval. "You're building what I never managed—voluntary cooperation across factional lines. It's either brilliant or about to collapse spectacularly."
"Both, probably," Damon mutters.
We spend hours establishing protocols: buddy systems, check-in schedules, safe houses, emergency signals. My six clones deploy to key positions—Mind Shield with Elena, Defensive Shield with Caroline, Sensory maintaining town-wide surveillance, Magic Absorption with Bonnie for magical support, Strength with the hybrids for physical backup, Phasing as rapid response for evacuations.

As dawn approaches, Caroline refuses to leave my side despite my insistence that she'd be safer at home with her mother.
"You're not doing this alone anymore," she says firmly. "We're all targets, so we all defend. Together."
The alliance settles into defensive positions across the boarding house—vervain distributed, weapons ready, everyone aware that Katherine's opening move was just the beginning.
Katherine's war has started, and we're ready for whatever comes next.
