Chapter 79: Esther Awakens - Season 2 Finale Part 1
POV: Sam Barton
The ceremonial chamber Klaus prepared for Esther's awakening feels more like a courtroom than a family reunion, and I suppose that's appropriate given what's at stake.
All five Mikaelson siblings stand in formation around their mother's coffin—Klaus furthest back with my Mind Shield clone beside him, Elijah and Rebekah flanking the coffin, Kol and Finn closer to Bonnie who's ready to activate the binding spell.
My other five clones maintain their assigned positions, creating defensive network that should—theoretically—prevent catastrophic magical violence.
Bonnie's hands glow with Bennett ancestral magic, the binding spell woven and ready for immediate activation.
"Last chance to reconsider," Elijah offers, though his hand is already on the dagger embedded in Esther's heart.
"Do it," Klaus says through clenched teeth.
Elijah pulls the dagger.
The effect is immediate and overwhelming.
Power radiates from Esther's awakening body in waves that make the air itself feel heavy with magical pressure. Her eyes snap open—not gold like vampires or amber like werewolves, but pure white glowing with witch magic accumulated over a thousand years of conscious imprisonment.
Bonnie activates the binding instantly—ancestral magic wrapping around Esther like chains made of light and shadow.
For three terrible seconds, I think Esther's going to break the binding through sheer power. The magical construct strains, Bonnie's ancestors channeling desperately to reinforce their spell.
Then Esther stops resisting.
Her eyes scan the room, taking in all five of her children standing together for the first time in how many centuries.
"My children," Esther breathes, and her voice carries emotions I wasn't expecting—not rage, but grief so profound it's almost physical. "All of you. Together."
Tears stream down her face.
"I've been conscious in darkness for nine hundred years," Esther continues, her voice breaking. "Feeling your pain, experiencing your suffering, unable to reach you or help or even die. Just trapped, aware, witnessing everything."
Klaus staggers like he's been struck. "You felt... everything?"
"Every century you spent hating me," Esther confirms, looking at Klaus with expression that's pure maternal anguish. "Every moment of your suffering under Mikael's rejection. Every hybrid you created seeking the acceptance you deserved from birth. Niklaus, I felt it all and couldn't stop it."
The revelation crashes over the room like tsunami.
"You weren't just sealed," Finn realizes. "You were tortured. Conscious but immobile, aware but helpless."
"The cruelest prison imaginable," Esther agrees. "But also a window. I watched you all grow, change, find purpose despite the curse I inflicted. Niklaus—you've become what I always hoped. A leader who protects rather than destroys."
Klaus actually falls to his knees, centuries of rage and grief finally breaking through his defenses. "I hated you. For a thousand years, I blamed you for everything."
"As you should have," Esther replies gently. "I created vampirism to protect you after Henrik's death, but the magic corrupted. Turned you into predators when I meant to make you invulnerable. My spell, my mistake, my responsibility."
I step forward carefully, very aware that I'm human addressing Original witch who could probably kill me with a thought if Bonnie's binding wasn't holding.
"The magical binding prevents you from harming your children or their bloodlines," I explain. "It limits your magic to non-lethal applications and alerts us if you attempt forbidden spells. It's insurance, not punishment. Will you accept it?"
Esther examines the binding with witch's perception, clearly analyzing every aspect of Bonnie's craftsmanship.
"Bennett magic," Esther observes, focusing on Bonnie. "Your ancestor Ayana was my dearest friend. She opposed the immortality spell, warned me it would corrupt. She was right."
"My ancestors helped create this binding," Bonnie says quietly. "They remember you, Esther. Some with respect, some with fear, all with recognition of your power."
Esther's gaze travels back to the magical chains restricting her, then to her five children standing together.
"Yes, child," Esther decides. "I accept these chains willingly. My children deserve protection from my mistakes—past, present, and future. Bind me as you see fit. I'll not resist."
The shock is palpable. Even Bonnie looks stunned that the Original witch surrendered without fight.

[ESTHER RELATIONSHIP: COMPLICATED ALLY]
[MIKAELSON FAMILY RELATIONSHIP: UNITED FAMILY]
The Mikaelson family embraces—Rebekah and Finn crying openly, Kol laughing in disbelief, Elijah smiling with rare genuine joy.
Klaus stands apart, clearly processing emotions he hasn't allowed himself to feel in centuries.
Esther extends her hand toward him. "My son. I'm so sorry. For the curse, for the suffering, for not being strong enough to help you when you needed it most."
Klaus hesitates, a thousand years of pain warring with desperate need for maternal acceptance.
Then he takes her hand.
They don't embrace—that would be too much too fast—but the gesture carries weight that transcends words.
Caroline finds me at the edge of the ceremony, both of us watching history unfold.
"We did it," she whispers, gripping my hand tightly. "A thousand-year blood feud ending in tears and forgiveness. Sam, we actually did it."
I nod, exhausted and relieved and terrified about what comes next.
Because Esther's awake now. The Original witch is bound but still dangerous, united with her children but carrying centuries of magical knowledge and potential vendettas.
And somewhere in Charlotte, Mikael sleeps in his tomb, the father figure who might destroy everything we've built when he inevitably wakes.
But for now, this moment brings peace instead of war, reconciliation instead of revenge.
Caroline kisses my cheek. "You're smiling. First genuine smile I've seen in weeks."
"We survived," I reply simply. "Again. Despite impossible odds and catastrophic potential consequences."
"That's becoming a pattern," Caroline observes.
"A terrifying pattern," I agree.
My six clones begin dismissing now that immediate danger has passed, each one flickering out of existence as I conserve MP for whatever challenges tomorrow brings.
The Mikaelson family stands together—mother and children reunited for the first time in a millennium, bound by magic but also by something approaching hope.
