Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: Summer of Preparation

Chapter 81: Summer of Preparation

POV: Caroline Forbes

The summer after establishing the Mystic Falls Accord is the most peaceful three months Caroline's experienced since Sam Barton arrived and transformed her life from mundane to supernatural.

Sam establishes rigorous training schedule that Caroline coordinates with her characteristic organizational genius—color-coded spreadsheets tracking everyone's progress, mandatory rest periods, and strategic skill development.

His six clones practice formations daily at the abandoned quarry, moving in synchronization that's become almost artistic. Mind Shield and Magic Absorption coordinate defensive magic, Defensive Shield and Strength handle physical combat, Sensory and Phasing manage infiltration and intelligence.

Tyler refines his hybrid abilities through sparring with Damon and Stefan, learning to control the transformation between human, vampire, and werewolf aspects with precision that Mason says usually takes decades to achieve.

Bonnie pushes her magical limits with Bennett ancestors, channeling more witches simultaneously than Caroline ever thought possible. She can now maintain combat-level spells for hours instead of minutes, her power approaching what Caroline imagines Original witches must possess.

And Caroline herself takes self-defense lessons from Rebekah because being human in supernatural world requires every advantage she can get.

"You're quite good," Rebekah observes during a training session, Caroline having just successfully dodged a vampire-speed strike. "For a human."

"I'm motivated," Caroline replies, adjusting her stance. "Sam's clones can protect me, but I refuse to be helpless damsel waiting for rescue."

"Admirable," Rebekah says. "Klaus would approve. He's always valued strength in all its forms."

The mention of Klaus brings complicated feelings Caroline's still processing.

The letters started arriving two weeks after Klaus left for New Orleans.

The first one came in an envelope that smelled faintly of old paper and ink, addressed in flowing calligraphy that suggested centuries of practice.

Caroline,

New Orleans is remarkable—French Quarter architecture predating your country's founding, music that makes the soul dance, art that would make you weep with beauty. I'm establishing court here, bringing order to chaos much as we did in Mystic Falls.

I find myself thinking of you often. Your optimism, your organizational tyranny, your refusal to let supernatural chaos dim your essential humanity. You'd love this city.

When you're ready, come visit. I'll show you wonders.

Niklaus

Caroline showed Sam immediately because hiding correspondence from Klaus Mikaelson seemed like terrible relationship decision.

"He's trying to seduce you," Sam observed neutrally, reading the letter.

"I know," Caroline admitted. "But is it wrong that part of me finds it flattering? A thousand-year-old hybrid writing me letters about art and music?"

Sam kissed her gently. "You're allowed to be flattered. Just don't run off to New Orleans without me."

The letters continued arriving weekly—each one more charming than the last, describing Klaus's renovations of historical buildings, his art collection, the supernatural politics he's navigating.

Caroline keeps them in a box in her room, not quite ready to throw them away but not quite sure what they mean either.

"He's courting you," Rebekah explains during another training session. "My brother doesn't write letters to people he doesn't care about. He's planning long game—waiting for you to be ready for adventure beyond small-town life."

"I have Sam," Caroline protests.

"And Nik knows that," Rebekah replies. "But he's immortal. He can wait decades, centuries if necessary. That's how Originals think about time."

It's unsettling and flattering simultaneously.

The summer brings other developments too.

Sheriff Liz fully embraces her role as supernatural mediator, her Regeneration making her essentially unkillable by human standards. She coordinates with Sam's clones to maintain Accord compliance, mediates disputes between factions, and even teaches a community class on supernatural awareness for humans who want to understand their new reality.

"This is what I always wanted," Liz tells Caroline over family dinner one night. "Protecting people through truth instead of maintaining comfortable lies. Sam's gift didn't just heal my cancer—it gave me purpose."

Matt adjusts to supernatural awareness by becoming Liz's deputy for human-supernatural relations. Jeremy trains with Alaric to become supernatural hunter who protects rather than destroys.

Elena spends summer at Whitmore College orientation, planning for normal future that Caroline hopes she'll actually get.

And through it all, Sam coordinates everything with his six clones and tactical genius that makes impossible seem routine.

On the last day of summer, Caroline finds Sam in hammock at his estate, his six clones stationed around the property in relaxed patrol rather than combat readiness.

"Senior year starts tomorrow," Caroline says, settling beside him. "Normal high school stuff—classes, prom, graduation. Think we'll get through it without apocalypse?"

Sam chuckles, pulling her closer. "With our luck? Absolutely not. Something's always coming."

Caroline elbows him playfully. "Your optimism is inspiring."

"I learned from the best," Sam replies, kissing her.

They watch the sunset together, both aware that summer peace can't last forever but choosing to enjoy it while it does.

Tomorrow brings senior year. Eventually Klaus will return from New Orleans. And somewhere in the supernatural darkness, new threats are gathering—Caroline can feel it like approaching storm.

But tonight brings Sam's arms around her, his clones maintaining perfect surveillance, and the knowledge that whatever comes next, they'll face it together.
