Chapter 99 - Chapter 99: Graduation Preparation

Chapter 99: Graduation Preparation

POV: Caroline Forbes

The cure expedition team returns one week after prom with breakthrough intelligence that reshapes everything.

Rebekah, Stefan, and Connor burst into the Salvatore boarding house with maps, research documents, and excitement that cuts through the post-battle exhaustion.

"We found it," Rebekah announces. "Silas's island."

Everyone gathers as Stefan spreads maps across the table—modern nautical charts marked with handwritten annotations.

"Remote island off Nova Scotia coast," Stefan explains. "Not on current maps, protected by supernatural barriers that make it invisible to normal navigation. But Connor's hunter instincts can guide us through."

Connor, still moving carefully from his explosion injuries but healing well, adds his analysis. "The Five's hunter marks contain map fragments—incomplete because I didn't kill enough vampires to activate mine fully, but combined with historical records and Rebekah's Original vampire memory, we triangulated the location."

"How certain are you?" Bonnie asks.

"Ninety percent," Rebekah replies. "The island matches every description from legends—tropical despite northern latitude due to magical warming, ancient ruins, Qetsiyah's protective spells still active after two millennia."

Elena leans forward eagerly. "So the cure is real? We can actually find it?"

Klaus intervenes sharply. "The doppelgänger stays in Mystic Falls. If Silas wakes, Elena could be his target—keeping her distant from his tomb is basic tactical sense."

Elena looks ready to argue, but Stefan supports Klaus. "He's right. You're too valuable and vulnerable. Let us handle the island."

The expedition debate consumes the next hour.

Rebekah wants the cure for herself—a thousand years of immortality is enough. Stefan goes to protect Rebekah, their complicated history making separation impossible. Connor provides hunter guidance through supernatural barriers. Bonnie's needed for magical detection and Bennett spells.

And Sam volunteers immediately. "My clones would be invaluable for island exploration—Phasing can scout through ruins, Sensory can detect magical traps, Strength and Magic Absorption provide combat support."

Caroline's heart sinks because she knew this was coming but hoped maybe, just maybe, Sam would choose differently.

"You just lost two clones," Caroline argues. "You're still grieving, still adapting to fighting with four instead of six. Stay here, graduate, heal."

"People will die if I don't help," Sam counters.

"People will die regardless!" Caroline's voice cracks. "You can't save everyone, Sam. You've tried for a year, and it cost you pieces of your soul at prom. Please. Just... graduate with me. Have one normal moment before throwing yourself at ancient immortal monsters."

The room goes quiet as everyone watches their argument.

Klaus, surprisingly, supports Caroline. "The boy needs recovery time. His tactical effectiveness is compromised by grief and reduced capabilities. Send me instead—I'm indestructible, motivated to keep Silas sleeping, and frankly bored with New Orleans already."

Sam looks between Caroline and the expedition team, clearly torn.

Finally, he decides: "I'll attend graduation. Caroline deserves that normalcy, and honestly, so do I. We'll graduate, celebrate, then I join the island expedition immediately after the ceremony. Best compromise I can offer."

Caroline accepts it because it's better than nothing. "One week. You give me one week of normal senior year conclusion, then you can go risk your life fighting two-thousand-year-old threats."

"Deal," Sam agrees.

Klaus actually smiles with approval. "Graduate, boy. Then we hunt ancient monsters together. It'll be excellent bonding experience for our friendship."

"We're not friends," Sam mutters.

"We're not enemies anymore," Klaus counters. "That's progress."

[LEVEL 38: 900/5,600 TO LEVEL 39]

The week passes in blur of graduation preparation mixed with expedition planning.

Caroline coordinates both simultaneously because of course she does—graduation decorations and supply lists for potentially deadly supernatural expedition organized in the same color-coded binder.

"Boat chartered for June 15th, day after graduation," Caroline notes. "Expedition supplies assembled, magical protections prepared, emergency extraction protocols established. And you'll wear the blue tie with your graduation gown because it matches my dress."

"How are you this organized about everything?" Sam asks with genuine admiration.

"Practice," Caroline replies. "And denial. If I plan every detail perfectly, maybe nothing will go catastrophically wrong."

They both know that's not how supernatural crises work, but the illusion of control helps.
