Agnarath soars across the night sky.
The moon vanishes behind him as his wings spread wide, blocking its light for a single breath and casting the entire castle into darkness.
I stand on the palace grounds with my hand resting against Dawnstar's snout.
Her scales are warm beneath my palm, smooth in some places and ridged in others. She lowers her head just a little more, letting out a soft rumble that vibrates through my fingers.
A small smile pulls at my lips as I pet her.
Just three nights ago, standing this close to her would have made my heart feel like it was about to burst through my chest.
The fear is still there now, but it no longer owns me.
I stroke the side of her snout once before stepping back.
"El Herænaz." (Lower yourself.)
Dawnstar obeys immediately, lowering herself to the ground. Then she stretches one wing down and settles it against the ground like a bridge.
