Chapter 133 - Chapter 133: When Germany Learned to Fly

Three days later, the storm clouds that had gathered over Germany finally broke apart, surrendering the sky to sunlight and offering the opportunity they had been waiting for.

Northern Germany awoke beneath a clear autumn sky. The air was crisp with the scent of wet earth and fallen leaves, while sunlight spread across the countryside in broad golden bands, revealing a world washed clean by rain.

It was as favourable a day as any man could ask for when preparing to challenge the sky.

The demonstration grounds lay outside Oranienburg, north of Berlin. During the previous year, the Oskar Industrial Group had quietly transformed the isolated estate into Germany's first dedicated aviation research centre.

Officially, it was an experimental engineering station supporting the Army's work with observation balloons and airships.

In truth, it was where Oskar intended to create an entirely new branch of warfare.

The compound contained twelve hangars, two broad grass runways, engine-testing sheds, workshops, laboratories, fuel stores, barracks, medical facilities, and a modest control tower equipped with signal flags, lamps, wind instruments, and experimental wireless equipment. Two high fences enclosed the grounds, broken only by a single heavily guarded entrance.

While nearly sixty members of Oskar's Black Guard protected the airfield and the secrets being developed within it.

That morning, the Eternal Guard accompanied Oskar and his family to the demonstration. Their motorcycles reached the entrance first, followed by Oskar's A-class Muscle Motors automobile and several escort vehicles. Guards spread toward the fences, watchtowers, and surrounding buildings while the main car continued toward the largest hangar.

Oskar stepped out first.

His household followed.

Tanya, Anna, and Gundelinde emerged with the children, while Karl and Heddy arrived behind them with their own young family. For several minutes, the secret aviation centre resembled less a military installation than a travelling royal nursery that had taken a wrong turn into an engine yard.

The children stared at everything.

To them, the hangars were enormous barns, the aircraft engines were sleeping mechanical beasts, and the engineers carrying instruments and clipboards were simply another variety of unusually serious adult.

To Oskar and Karl, however, the place carried a far heavier meaning.

The Wright brothers were dead.

Their workshop had burned, their research had disappeared, and their desperate attempt to imitate Karl's wings had ended beneath the frozen trees of an Ohio forest. Oskar could not undo what had happened, nor return the two brothers to the future they had helped imagine.

He could only ensure that their dream did not die with them.

Men would fly.

This time, they would rise in machines shaped by calculation, testing, and disciplined engineering rather than desperation.

Gustav Lilienthal met them outside the main hangar, accompanied by Hugo Junkers and several senior engineers. Lilienthal's expression was carefully controlled, but the excitement behind it was impossible to conceal.

"Your Imperial Highness," he said, bowing. "Everything is prepared."

Oskar looked toward the closed hangar doors.

"Show me."

The words carried far more hunger than ceremony.

Lilienthal turned and led them across the packed ground toward the largest hangar.

The doors began to roll open.

Inside the hangar, beneath rows of suspended lamps and the mingled scents of varnish, oil, hot metal, and freshly cut timber, stood Germany's first true aircraft.

It was not beautiful, not yet.

Its body remained a marriage of wood, fabric, steel tubing, and tightly drawn wire. Linen stretched across its wings, lacquered until the surface caught the light with a faint sheen, while the broad propeller at its nose rested motionless, as though waiting to discover whether the machine behind it deserved to fly.

It belonged unmistakably to an age still learning how to leave the ground.

Yet to Oskar, it was the most promising object in the entire compound.

Most aircraft of 1909 appeared fragile and apologetic—skeletal contraptions held together by timber, canvas, and the optimism of men who had not yet learned how unforgiving the sky could be.

This machine did not appear to be asking permission. It had been built with the expectation that the air would obey.

At first glance, it was a biplane, though the resemblance to ordinary contemporary machines ended there. Its upper wing was broad and gently curved downward where it met the fuselage, giving it the beginnings of the gull-wing profile Oskar had demanded. The lower wing was smaller, creating an unequal-wing arrangement that preserved the strength and lift of a biplane without carrying as much unnecessary drag.

The wings were thick by the standards of the age, their shape determined by calculations of lift and airflow rather than imitation and guesswork. Stout struts joined them in a compact, orderly structure, supported by only as much wire bracing as the available materials required.

There was no chaotic lattice of timber and cable. Every brace appeared to have a purpose.

The fuselage was enclosed rather than left as a naked framework. Layered wood had been shaped into smooth, deliberate curves around an internal structure reinforced with steel tubing near the engine, cockpit, and landing gear. It narrowed cleanly toward the tail, suggesting that the air would flow around it rather than seize upon exposed beams and wires.

At the nose sat the greatest achievement of the project.

The engine was larger and more powerful than anything most European designers would have dared place upon such a compact aircraft. Its cylinders were arranged radially around the central shaft, allowing each to receive cooling air directly. A carefully shaped cowling guided that air over the machinery while reducing the turbulent drag created by an exposed engine.

Before it rested a broad, two-bladed wooden propeller, polished until its edges shone beneath the lamps.

Oskar found himself circling the machine without conscious thought.

He was no longer examining it like a prince attending a demonstration. He studied it as he might study a rifle, a ship, or the tracks of some unfamiliar predator—searching for the places where it would bend, fail, overheat, or betray the man trusting his life to it.

The open cockpit sat behind the upper wing, raised enough to provide the pilot with a clear view ahead and to either side. Before the seat stood an actual instrument panel.

It was modest by the standards Oskar remembered, but revolutionary for the present.

There were gauges for altitude, engine revolutions, oil pressure, fuel level, and estimated airspeed. Nothing had been added merely to impress observers. Every instrument existed to answer a question the pilot could not safely guess.

He would not simply ride the aircraft and hope it remained aloft. He would command it.

The tail was compact and firmly braced. Its control surfaces appeared properly balanced rather than enlarged to compensate for a badly designed fuselage. Even the landing gear had been arranged with a broad stance and sufficient strength to survive imperfect grass fields and inexperienced pilots.

Standing motionless beneath the lamps, the machine already seemed fast.

Oskar could almost see it climbing through the autumn air, banking tightly and holding its speed through turns where the fragile aircraft of other nations would wallow and drift.

Where most contemporary machines remained victims of the wind, this one had been designed to master it.

That was what made the sight so extraordinary.

There was nothing mystical about the aircraft. It was only wood, cloth, steel, wire, fuel, and mathematics. Nothing impossible had been required.

The future had simply arrived early and found German engineers waiting for it.

Gustav Lilienthal stepped beside Oskar, his hands clasped behind his back as though resisting the urge to touch the machine he had helped bring into existence.

"Your Imperial Highness," he said, pride carefully restrained within his voice, "this is the aircraft we have developed from your specifications."

Oskar's household entered the hangar behind him, forming a loose circle around the prototype.

The children stared at it as though the engineers had chained a dragon indoors.

Durin immediately appeared determined to climb it. Imperiel examined the nose and landing gear with the solemn intensity of an officer inspecting a new cannon. Heddy tightened her hand around Karl's sleeve, silently warning him that volunteering to fly would result in consequences far more immediate than any mechanical failure.

Oskar stopped before the propeller.

"It is ugly," he said.

Lilienthal's expression tightened slightly.

"And yet," Oskar continued, satisfaction entering his voice, "it possesses the sort of ugliness that becomes beautiful the moment it begins moving."

Lilienthal released the breath he had been holding.

"Under the limitations of present materials and manufacturing," he said, "it is the best machine we have been able to produce."

Oskar ran his gaze once more across the wings, struts, and tensioned wires.

"Then let us see whether the sky agrees."

The formality of the inspection did not survive the children for long.

Once they understood that the aircraft could be approached, they gathered around it with fearless curiosity. Small hands patted the wheels and traced the lacquered fuselage, leaving fingerprints the mechanics pretended not to notice. Durin leaned his weight against one wheel as though testing the strength of an enemy fortification.

Imperiel continued circling the nose, evidently considering whether the machine ought to belong to him.

Oskar lifted his three eldest daughters one after another and placed them carefully inside the cockpit. They sat wide-eyed beneath the upper wing, hands folded stiffly at first, as though fearing that the aircraft might suddenly start and carry them through the roof.

Two of the younger boys occupied Oskar's shoulders, clinging to his hair while watching the inspection from above like small kings seated upon a living tower.

Their mothers observed with the patient resignation of women who understood that preventing children from touching history was a hopeless undertaking. The youngest infants slept in their arms, wrapped against the autumn cold and entirely unaware of what had been constructed only a few paces away.

Karl remained apart from the others.

His attention moved between the wing structure, the engine mount, the landing gear, and the quality of the workmanship. He was not imagining triumph in the skies.

He was calculating.

How many could the factories produce?

How quickly?

How much would each machine cost?

And which other project would begin screaming when Oskar diverted the necessary money and materials?

Hugo Junkers stepped forward once the children had been persuaded to clear the wheels.

The hangar quieted—not completely, because the smaller children refused to recognise solemn occasions, but enough for the engineers, officers, and gathered family to hear him clearly.

"Your Imperial Highness," Junkers began, "the aircraft before you is designated F1-01. It was constructed according to the principles you provided, altered only where current materials or manufacturing techniques made the original design impractical."

He gestured toward the wings.

"The unequal-wing arrangement allows us to retain the structural strength and lift of a biplane while reducing the drag produced by a full lower wing. The upper wing carries most of the aerodynamic load. The smaller lower wing strengthens the assembly and improves manoeuvrability."

Karl studied the compact geometry with renewed interest.

Junkers turned toward the engine.

"The prototype is powered by a new one-hundred-and-twenty-horsepower air-cooled radial engine developed specifically for aviation. It uses duplicated ignition and improved lubrication, while the cowling directs cooling air around the cylinders."

A murmur passed through the adults. For the number was extraordinary for a machine of its size and period.

Junkers continued without allowing himself to smile.

"The aircraft measures seven-point-three metres in length, with a wingspan of nine-point-five metres and a height of approximately two-point-four. Fully fuelled and carrying its pilot, its maximum takeoff weight is slightly above five hundred kilograms."

He glanced down at the notes in his hand.

"We estimate a maximum speed between one hundred and twenty and one hundred and twenty-five kilometres per hour. Practical ceiling, approximately twenty-eight hundred metres. Endurance, ninety minutes under ordinary test conditions."

Those figures would have seemed modest to Oskar in his previous life.

In 1909, they placed the prototype years ahead of almost every aircraft openly operating in Europe.

Junkers rested one hand against the smooth wooden fuselage.

"This aircraft carries no armament," he said. "It is a working proof of the design—the engine, controls, structure, cooling system, and flight characteristics. We have included structural allowances for later development, but no guns, bomb fittings, or military equipment have been installed."

Oskar nodded approvingly. Although several children appeared disappointed. Oskar was not.

"A machine that cannot fly properly has no business carrying weapons," he said. "Prove the aircraft first. We can teach it to fight afterward."

Lilienthal's shoulders relaxed.

The F1 was not yet a fighter. It was the foundation from which one could be created.

Future versions might carry cameras, wireless equipment, synchronized machine guns, bomb racks, stronger engines, metal components, and eventually armour. But every one of those additions would be useless if the basic airframe proved unstable or the engine unreliable.

Oskar studied the prototype once more.

"If war began tomorrow," he said, "this machine would remain vulnerable. Wood and fabric do not forgive bullets, and it possesses neither armour nor redundancy enough to survive serious damage."

He looked between Lilienthal and Junkers.

"But you have solved the first and most important problem."

Both men waited.

"You have made it fly."

The approval in his voice was unmistakable.

"That alone is an achievement. Well done, gentlemen. Consider me satisfied—for the moment."

Lilienthal appeared to release several days of accumulated tension in a single breath. Junkers offered a smaller, more disciplined nod, though the light in his eyes betrayed equal pride.

Oskar returned to the cockpit and began lifting the girls out.

They came reluctantly.

Juniel proved especially difficult. She wrapped both hands around the control stick and refused to release it, glaring at anyone who approached as though possession had already been legally settled in her favour.

Oskar leaned closer with exaggerated gravity.

"Do you intend to conduct the test flight yourself?"

Juniel nodded fiercely.

Oskar responded with the only weapon certain to break her resolve.

He tickled her.

Juniel's stern expression collapsed into shrieking laughter. Her hands released the control stick, allowing Oskar to lift her from the cockpit. The moment her feet touched the floor, she attempted to run back toward the aircraft, only for Tanya to catch her neatly by the back of her dress.

Oskar straightened and looked toward the engineers.

"Very well. Let the demonstration begin before my children decide to seize the aircraft permanently."

The hangar returned to life.

Mechanics inspected the control cables, wing tension, landing gear, fuel lines, and engine mountings. Tools clinked against metal. Orders passed between the ground crews as the prototype was carefully rolled toward the open doors.

The test pilot approached wearing a heavy leather coat, fitted cap, goggles, and reinforced head protection. A compact silk parachute had been secured against his back.

Oskar had insisted upon it.

The deaths of the Wright brothers had ensured that he would not build Germany's aviation programme upon the unnecessary corpses of brave men.

The pilot bowed briefly.

Oskar returned the acknowledgement with a measured nod—not a prince greeting a servant, but a commander recognising a man willing to trust his life to an unproven machine.

Karl stood nearby with the newest Imperial Image Works camera braced against his shoulder. Its mechanism whirred steadily, recording both the moving images and the noise surrounding the field.

"Do not fail now," he muttered at the machine, as though history itself might be corrected through intimidation.

The F1 was rolled onto the grass.

Ground crews turned the propeller carefully through several revolutions before one mechanic pulled it down with all his strength.

The engine coughed.

The propeller jerked.

A second attempt produced another violent sputter.

On the third, the radial engine caught.

Its cylinders erupted into a deep, uneven roar before settling into rhythm. The propeller became a pale disc, driving wind across the field and tugging at coats, skirts, hats, and loose hair.

The children shouted in delight.

The pilot tested the controls, checked his instruments, and raised one gloved hand.

The chocks were pulled away, and the F1 began to move.

At first it rolled slowly, bouncing over the wet grass. Then the engine note rose and the machine gathered speed. The tail lifted, bringing the fuselage level as the broad upper wing bit into the air.

After a little more than two hundred metres, the wheels left the ground.

The aircraft climbed.

It did not leap wildly or wobble like a kite caught in uncertain wind. It rose cleanly and steadily, responding to the pilot's movements with a confidence no machine of its age should have possessed.

A cheer broke across the airfield.

Engineers embraced. Mechanics waved their caps. Even several of the Black Guards along the fence abandoned their rigid stillness to look upward.

The children screamed loudest of all. Oskar did not cheer, he merely watched.

The prototype climbed above the compound, banked gently, and completed its first turn. Its wings remained stable. The pilot levelled the aircraft, increased power, and passed over the field at speed before climbing again.

Nothing about the demonstration was intended as a public spectacle. Every manoeuvre answered a question.

Would the engine overheat? Would the wing structure twist under load? Would the controls become dangerously heavy as speed increased? Could the machine bank, descend, recover, and maintain altitude without bleeding away all its energy?

One by one, the answers appeared.

The engine held. The wings remained firm. The controls responded. The aircraft obeyed.

Compared with what Oskar knew would eventually fill the skies, the F1 remained crude. It was open to the wind, unarmoured, unarmed, and constructed largely from wood and fabric.

But compared with the fragile, drifting machines of 1909, it was something entirely new.

It held speed through its turns. It climbed with authority. It went where the pilot directed it.

Oskar leaned slightly toward Karl without taking his eyes from the sky.

"When he lands, give the pilot a bonus worth remembering."

Karl continued filming.

"Already arranged."

The aircraft completed a broad circuit of the field before turning into the wind and beginning its descent. It settled steadily toward the earth, its main wheels brushing the grass before the landing gear bounced once and caught.

The F1 rolled forward, slowed, and finally came to rest beneath another eruption of cheers.

Only then did Oskar allow himself to smile.

Good.

Now make it better.

The engine faded into a low mechanical rumble, and the propeller turned through its final, slowing revolutions.

For one brief moment, the future seemed almost simple.

He had the machine. He had the pilots. He had the factories and resources required to build more. Most importantly, he had a nation that was beginning to understand how to climb.

Given time, the skies themselves would belong to Germany.
