Chapter 147 - EPILOGUE — The Name of the Wolf King’s Heir

Night settled gently over the den, wrapped in a hush that felt almost sacred. Soft firelight glowed along the walls, casting warm gold across Kanah as she lay resting on the nesting bed, wrapped in layers of soft fur. Exhaustion tugged at her limbs, but joy kept her awake, heart full and warm as she watched Owain with their newborn.

Owain held the cub against his bare chest, as if he were afraid to loosen his arms even for a moment.

The baby—tiny, warm, swaddled in soft white fur—rested peacefully, breathing in the steady rhythm of deep sleep. A faint, soft ear twitched atop the small head; the cub's wolf features flickered gently as instinct reacted to the new world.

Owain stared at the child with a look Kanah had never seen on his face before: awe, vulnerability, fierce devotion.

"My child," he murmured softly, voice thick. "My little one… you're perfect."

Kanah smiled, weak but full. "I can't believe they're finally here."

Owain lifted his head, eyes glowing in the firelight. "You brought them into this world." His voice trembled. "You're the strongest person I've ever known."

She reached out. Owain leaned close so she could touch the baby's cheek with her fingertips. The cub made a small sound—half sigh, half yawn—and nuzzled closer to Owain's chest.

Kanah's heart squeezed. "They know your scent."

"They know yours more," Owain whispered. "They calmed the moment you touched them."

Footsteps approached softly.

Yllas entered first, wings folded close, his expression gentle and reverent. "How is our Queen?"

"Tired," Kanah smiled, "but happy."

Next came Gerrin, carrying warm tea and a mana-calming herb for her recovery. He set them down quietly before kneeling beside Kanah's side. "Your body is stabilizing well. The cub's mana is strong and anchored."

Last, Helion slipped in—light on his feet despite the obvious excitement vibrating through him. His tail flicked behind him as he peeked over Owain's shoulder.

"Oooh, look at them. Look how tiny!" He grinned wide. "I could carry them on one paw."

Owain growled. "You will not carry them on one paw."

Helion raised both hands defensively. "Two paws, then."

Yllas chuckled quietly. "Let Owain have his moment. He'll allow us to touch the child when he stops trembling."

"I'm not trembling," Owain lied.

Gerrin smiled knowingly. "Your wolf is."

Owain didn't argue—because it was true. Every part of him vibrated with intensity, instinct overflowing as he held the tiny life against him.

Kanah watched all of them gather, soft warmth blooming in her chest.

This was family.

This was home.

Yllas approached Owain slowly. "May I?"

Owain hesitated—only for a breath. Then he shifted slightly, allowing Yllas to touch the cub's back with two fingers.

Yllas inhaled softly. "Their mana… it feels like yours, Owain. But also Kanah's resonance."

Helion leaned in next. "They're adorable." He brushed one tiny hand. The cub curled its fist instinctively around the tip of his finger. Helion froze, eyes going wide. "Oh no. I'm in love. Someone stop me."

"Move aside so Kanah can see," Gerrin murmured.

Helion stepped back, overly dramatic. "Fine. But I'm next for cuddles."

Owain shot him a glare. "When they're older."

Gerrin smiled gently. "He means when he calms down."

Kanah laughed softly, covering her mouth. Her body was sore, but the joy outweighed everything.

"Owain," she whispered. "Bring them to me."

Owain carried the child to her carefully—slow, controlled, protective. He sat beside her and eased the cub into her arms.

Kanah cradled the tiny wolf child against her chest. The cub shifted, turning instinctively toward her warmth. Their small hand rested against her skin.

Kanah's breath caught.

"They're beautiful," she whispered.

Owain leaned close, arm sweeping around both of them. His forehead brushed hers. "They look like you."

She shook her head. "No. They have your hair."

"And your softness," Yllas added.

"And your stubbornness," Helion said.

Kanah laughed breathlessly. "We don't even know that yet."

"We know," Helion insisted.

Gerrin nodded thoughtfully. "All traits appear early."

Owain kissed Kanah's temple. "Kanah… it's time."

She lifted her gaze. "Time for what?"

"To give our child a name."

Silence fell softly across the room.

Yllas folded his wings respectfully. Gerrin rested his hands on his thighs, eyes warm. Helion sat cross-legged on the floor, tail curling around his side, watching with bright anticipation.

Owain took a breath, steadying himself. His voice dropped to a deep, warm rumble.

"We've waited… years, it feels like," he murmured. "We survived loss. War. Instinct. Hunger. And we found each other through all of it."

Kanah's heart swelled.

Owain looked at her, eyes softening with a depth she felt in her chest.

"This child is our peace," he whispered. "Our future. A new beginning."

Kanah brushed her thumb over the cub's cheek. "Then their name should reflect that."

Owain nodded. "Do you have one?"

"I do," she said softly. "I knew it the moment I held them."

The sub-mates leaned forward, attentive. Owain cupped her cheek. "Tell me."

Kanah looked down at the child—sleeping quietly, tiny heartbeat fluttering beneath soft skin.

Then she whispered:

"Lyren."

Owain inhaled sharply. The sound was soft, but full of emotion.

Yllas smiled gently. "Lyren… it means light after storm in old dragon tongue."

Gerrin bowed his head. "And renewal in elven dialect."

Helion grinned. "In leopard tongue, it means 'little troublemaker.' Perfect."

Owain laughed softly through the surge of emotion. His voice thickened.

"Lyren…" He repeated the name reverently, tasting it on his tongue. "Our child… Lyren."

Kanah lifted the cub slightly, pressing a kiss to their tiny forehead. "Welcome to the world… Lyren Wulfren."

Owain's heart cracked visibly. His eyes shimmered.

He pulled Kanah gently against him, careful not to disturb the baby.

"You've given me everything," he whispered.

She shook her head, voice trembling. "You gave me a home."

Gerrin smiled warmly. "A new heir for the tribe."

Yllas bowed his head. "A future that will unite our kin."

Helion brushed a tiny lock of the baby's hair. "And someone who will definitely be faster than Owain."

Owain growled. "They will not outrun me."

Kanah laughed softly. "They'll try."

Lyren shifted in her arms, giving a soft tiny whine—the first sound of curiosity, of life, of presence.

Owain lowered his head, kissing the cub's small hand.

"My child," he whispered, voice full of promise. "I'll protect you. Teach you. Be everything you need."

Kanah leaned her head against his.

"And we'll raise them together," she murmured.

The sub-mates joined quietly around them, forming a protective circle—their family complete.

Lyren, small and warm and full of potential, slept in Kanah's arms as Owain wrapped both of them in his embrace.

And somewhere in the quiet night outside, a single wolf howled—a soft, steady song of welcome.

A new life had begun.

A new story waiting to unfold.

And the world felt full of promise again.
