Chapter 363: Ren's Corrections and a Familiar Spark
It was quite late by the time Courage returned, a stack of documents clutched in her arms. The usual bright energy that surrounded her seemed to have dimmed, replaced by a quiet melancholy. She was still feeling the absence of Jinx and Yuko, who had departed temporarily. Though they had only lived together for a short while, their friendships had quickly deepened, leaving a noticeable void now that they were gone.
Watching the somewhat dejected inspector head upstairs with her paperwork, Lucifer let out a soft sigh. "Ren," she murmured, her voice a low melody in the quiet shop, "it seems the mood is a little somber tonight."
Ren didn't look up from the book he was reading at the bar. "Partings are never trivial matters for those who form such close bonds," he replied calmly. "If they were, Cerberus wouldn't have retreated to her bed so early."
Lucifer sighed again, a sound of gentle agreement. She glided behind him, her movements fluid and graceful, and slipped back into her self-appointed role of 'dutiful wife'. Her slender fingers began to knead the tension from his shoulders, her touch both firm and soothing. "It truly makes me think of how things were at the very beginning," she said, her voice tinged with a wistful nostalgia.
"The very beginning?" Ren prompted, leaning into her touch.
"That's right," she hummed. "The shop was just as large then, but it was only the two of us. And then you, you clever man, somehow managed to tie me, the Queen of Hell, firmly to your side. Before I knew it, I had become one of the proprietresses, watching over this little haven with you. Hmm… it was all so full of surprises."
Ren nodded, a faint smile touching his lips. "It was indeed somewhat unexpected," he admitted softly. "But you enjoyed it too, didn't you, Lucifer?"
A genuine, radiant smile spread across her face. "That's why I say you're amazing. Not only do I enjoy it, but I am deeply grateful to have met you. I never would have believed anyone could make the Queen of Hell fall in love." She leaned forward, her chin resting on his shoulder as she peered at the door. "So… what kind of guest from another world do you think will grace us with their presence tonight?"
Ren considered this for a moment before shaking his head. "I don't know. That's something that can never be predicted. Isn't that what makes this Midnight Diner so interesting?"
"Honestly," Lucifer mused, "you and Yuko are a perfect match. One of you dares to tease, and the other secretly enjoys it. You both have a habit of saying things that sound deceptively philosophical, and you're both equally cunning. Although," she added with a smirk, "Yuko isn't nearly as sly as you are… she just has a rebellious streak."
Ren chuckled. "Hmm, Yuko is quite interesting. Speaking of which, Lucifer, your question just now… you were hoping I'd play along and predict who would come, weren't you?"
Lucifer huffed, a playful pout forming on her lips. "Don't you know how to satisfy your woman's little whims? You're not supposed to expose them; you're supposed to indulge them! But…" Her pout melted into a pleased smile. "Why does my man have to understand me so well? Isn't it said that a woman's heart is impossible to guess?"
He gently turned a page in the book before him, his voice soft. "Are you unhappy that I understand you?"
"Of course I'm happy," she purred. "No woman alive doesn't want her man to understand her. Speaking of which, what are you reading? Is that Clow Reed's notebook? You've been poring over it for days, occasionally making your own modifications."
Ren shot her a knowing glance. Lucifer, intrigued, leaned closer. "Oh? It's magic for creating living beings… and divinity? What an incredible man. Though this 'god' he describes seems a bit weak… Eh? Wait a moment… this is…" Her eyes widened, and a snort escaped her, quickly blossoming into a full-throated, musical laugh. "Pfft… Hahahaha!"
She had finally seen the true content of the notes. It was a careful, almost obsessive, profile of Ichihara Yuko, detailing Clow Reed's observations of her various preferences, strengths, weaknesses, and hobbies. And next to Clow's elegant script, Ren had been making his own annotations, circling key points, striking out errors with a decisive line, and scribbling the correct versions in the margins.
He had already altered a great deal. For instance, where Clow had written 'displays a cold and aloof demeanor,'Ren had crossed it out and amended,'Prone to devolving into a pouting brat who demands affection.'The phrase'enjoys excursions'was corrected to'loves to shop, with playing as an afterthought.''Values proper etiquette' was struck through entirely, replaced with,'In private, she's a completely rebellious, informal, and silly subordinate.'Ren had also circled certain phrases for emphasis:'the gesture of taking a puff from her kiseru pipe,'the words'true age unknown'and'single'from the statement'though she carries herself like a master, she has never been in love,'and'sometimes too lazy to sign, using a butterfly stamp instead.'He had drawn a heavy circle around the word'butterfly.'Lucifer wiped a tear of mirth from her eye. "Yuko might actually go on a rampage if she saw this," she giggled. "Especially since you've even'corrected'some of her'correct' traits. I have a feeling that rebellious streak of hers would definitely flare up."
"I'm not concerned," Ren said with a dismissive wave. "I've finished my review of the matter. When Yuko gets this notebook back, she'll just shyly hide it away."
"You really do understand her," Lucifer conceded, her laughter subsiding. "But you know, I can't help but feel that these notes, aside from being a magical record, also resemble… something like a matchmaking profile."
"I had the same thought," Ren agreed. "It seems Yuko wasn't wrong to call Clow Reed a cunning, four-eyed schemer."
Lucifer nodded, handing the notebook back to him. She stretched languidly, a lazy grace in her movements. "To be honest, I'm really looking forward to Ash's arrival. If he comes, I can finally visit the Pokémon world and catch a couple for myself!"
Ren smiled at her enthusiasm. "You really want a Pokémon, don't you? But are you certain it's safe for you to use your magic in another world?"
Lucifer paused, considering it. "Well, Yuko's world has its own magic, and Yuuka's world has youkai, but I can't sense either from here. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it should be fine as long as the door to the diner remains closed."
Ren nodded. He had yet to venture into another world himself, so he had no frame of reference. Lucifer's logic was sound, and her theory seemed plausible enough.
No sooner had the words left her mouth than the dimensional door at the entrance pulsed with a soft, golden light. Both Ren and Lucifer paused, stunned by the timing. A moment later, Pepper Potts stepped through, her eyes widening as she took in the shop's decor.
"Wow! Mr. Ren, your shop has become even more beautiful!" she exclaimed. "Tony told me you'd be open tonight. I didn't quite believe him, but I'm so glad he was right!"
Ren offered her a welcoming smile. "Tony has been craving some of my late-night fare for a while, it seems. What can I get for him?"
"Let me see…" Pepper pulled out her phone, tapping open a memo. "One seafood paella, one order of pan-fried beef meatballs, a bottle of champagne, and… uh… what is cactus salad dressing?"
A knowing smile touched Ren's lips. "Tony has certainly learned about my hidden menu. You should try some when you get back, Ms. Potts. It's quite good."
"I'm looking forward to it," she said warmly. "By the way, where's Yuko?"
"She returned to her world to take care of some errands. She'll be back in a little while."
"Oh, that's a shame. I was hoping to talk to her about fashion. I suppose I'll have to wait a few days."
"I'm sure she'll be very interested. Please, wait just a moment."
Ren turned and walked into the kitchen. Pepper chose a seat at the bar, but before she could even exchange a word with Lucifer, the door behind her flared with light once more.
Lucifer stared, her expression blank with surprise. "This… isn't this a bit too frequent? Who could it be now?"
A high-pitched, energetic cry cut through the air.
"Pika-pi!"
At the sound, Lucifer shot to her feet, her eyes wide with unrestrained excitement. Pikachu was here! That meant Ash had arrived! Her very own Pokémon was finally within reach
