Chapter 458: The Fickle Door and the Vanquished Straw Hats
Upon the vast expanse of the Grand Line, a unique archipelago known as Sabaody shimmered under the sun. Comprised of colossal mangrove trees, it was a bustling hub of activity, a place of wonder and amusement. But today, that wonder had been replaced by chaos. An unmatched incident involving the "Celestial Dragons" had thrown the islands into turmoil, and a desperate battle was now raging.
For Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, the situation was dire. They were hopelessly outmatched, with no room to maneuver and no chance to fight back.
"Why isn't it dark yet!" Nami yelled, her teeth gritted in frustration as she dodged a beam of light that vaporized the ground where she'd just stood.
Zoro, blood trickling from a dozen cuts, parried a blow with a strained grunt. "Nami! Are you trying to drag Shopkeeper Ren into this mess?!"
With a cigarette dangling from his lips, Sanji sent a fiery kick at a Pacifista, only for it to be blocked with cold steel. "Oi, you two! Now's not the time to be thinking about the shopkeeper! We need to figure out how to get out of this alive!"
"Leaving is no longer a viable option," Robin stated, her voice a low, grim murmur as she crossed her arms. "Prepare for the worst, Captain!"
Luffy slammed his fists together, his face a mask of fury and determination. "Doesn't matter who they are! I'm just gonna knock 'em all out!"
"Is this guy... a real Shichibukai..." Zoro breathed, his eyes locked on the towering, bible-clutching figure of Bartholomew Kuma.
Despite their ferocious resolve, the battle was a slaughter. For every meager blow they managed to land, they suffered devastating losses in return. Soon, the entire crew was battered, bruised, and bleeding, their strength rapidly fading.
The end came swiftly. The man called Kuma moved with impossible speed, his large palm extended towards Zoro. "Nami!" Zoro roared, his voice raw with urgency as the paw made contact. "Go to the shop!"
In a blink, he was gone. Vanished without a trace.
Elsewhere on the battlefield, a man with a lecherous grin was locked in a duel with a silver-haired old man. He paused, his eyes narrowing. "Oh? One of them just got sent flying. But what's this 'shop' he mentioned?"
"That's a question I'd like to know the answer to as well," the old man replied, his expression unreadable.
A raw, guttural scream tore from Luffy's throat as he watched his crewmates vanish, one by one, under Kuma's relentless assault. Powerlessness, cold and absolute, coiled in his gut. He could only watch, screaming their names until his voice was hoarse, until every last one of his friends had disappeared. With his work done, the giant man simply retreated into the shadows.
The old Marine, having withdrawn from his own fight, frowned, his gaze fixed on the directions the Straw Hats had been sent. "That direction... I suppose it's time for them to set off, then..."
The Celestial Dragon incident concluded as abruptly as it began, leaving many in a state of shock. But it also gave the world a chillingly clear understanding of an Admiral's strength, and an even deeper, more terrifying insight into the power wielded by the Shichibukai.
As dusk settled, the world turned from orange to purple. On another island, in a different world entirely, a woman submerged in a steaming bath stared at the bathroom door, lost in thought. A soft, ethereal light was emanating from its wooden frame. It wasn't a momentary flash; it was a steady, persistent glow.
'What in the world is this thing?'Lucifer wondered, her crimson eyes wide with a mixture of curiosity and caution.'Is it... trying to stop me from leaving?'
She glanced over her shoulder. Cerberus, ever vigilant, quickly wove a small, subtle spell. Seeing that Sōryūin Shion and the others in the main room hadn't noticed the phenomenon, both Lucifer and her three-headed companion let out a silent sigh of relief.
For some reason, Lucifer felt a premonition prickle at her skin. Something significant was about to happen—something far greater than a simple visitor. It felt as if worlds were on the verge of colliding...
Under Cerberus's spell, the door's strange behavior went unnoticed by the others. A moment later, the light faded, and the door returned to normal. Kasugano Sora, who had been watching it from the corner of her eye, was about to say something when she froze.
The door was glowing again.
This time, the light appeared on a beautiful, remote island, where the door of a grand tower began to hum with an otherworldly luminescence. A few elderly men in fine suits stared at the glowing portal, their expressions stunned. Yet, when they tried to open it, the handle wouldn't budge.
After a few minutes, the light gradually receded. The old men exchanged puzzled glances before dismissing it as a strange reflection. The fact that it wouldn't open must have been some kind of fluke. They had more important matters to attend to.
Meanwhile, in a dark, gothic castle on Kuraigana Island, Dracule "Hawkeye" Mihawk swirled a glass of deep red wine. His sharp, predatory eyes were fixed on the glowing door before him. He, of course, knew exactly what it was. He hadn't planned on visiting the shop tonight, yet here its entrance was, announcing its presence on its own.
"Hey! The door's glowing! What's going on?!" a high-pitched voice cried out.
"You go and open it," Hawkeye replied without turning.
A ghostly girl pouted, then gritted her teeth and floated over to the door. She grabbed the handle and pulled with all her might, but it remained sealed shut. Completely stumped, she spun around. "It won't open!"
Hawkeye nodded slowly. "It seems someone is about to arrive on this island."
"A guest?"
He didn't answer. The girl had no clue what he was talking about, but the fruit she was nibbling on was quite tasty. She shrugged and took another bite.
Suddenly, Hawkeye stiffened, his gaze snapping to the small, dark berries in her hand. "What are you eating?" he asked, his voice dangerously low.
"This little fruit! It's super yummy!" she chirped.
Hawkeye's eyelid twitched. His prized wild bayberries—the ones he had been painstakingly saving to make a sauce for his next steak—were being eaten like common snacks? How had she even found them?!
He let out a long, weary sigh. "Never mind. I'll likely have to visit the shop again soon anyway."
"What shop?"
"You'll know when the time comes."
"Hmph!" The girl made a face, then phased through the wall and disappeared.
Hawkeye sighed again, taking a slow sip of his wine. "I wonder just how many places this door has lit up tonight..."
As if in answer, the light from the door gradually faded, plunging the room back into shadow. He sat there in the quiet dark, contemplating.
Back in the shop's living quarters, Kasugano Sora and the others were utterly dumbfounded. Was the door malfunctioning? Why would it light up, go dark, and then light up again somewhere else? It was beyond bizarre.
Lucifer swallowed nervously. "This door... isn't it lighting up a few too many times?"
"Hmm..." came the unified, troubled murmur from Cerberus, Aoandon, and Kasugano Sora.
Lucifer was completely baffled. This was too strange. If it was just one person, that would be one thing, but this erratic flickering suggested something else entirely.
"What are you all thinking about so seriously?"
Ren's voice cut through their thoughts as he pushed a dining cart into the room. On it was their dinner, another spectacular spread of Chinese cuisine, this time focusing on savory and spicy flavors rather than sweet and sour.
The arrival of food was the moment Nakiri Mana looked forward to most each day. She was the first to scramble to the table, sitting with perfect posture like an elementary school student eagerly awaiting lunch.
Lucifer leaned close to Ren and quickly whispered what they had just witnessed with the door. Ren's eyes widened slightly in surprise. He thought for a moment, then said, "In that case, it might be flickering all night."
"Eh?!" a chorus of four voices exclaimed.
Lanterby looked up from the feast, confused. "What's flickering?"
"Nothing," Ren said smoothly. "We were just talking about the stars."
"Oh! Wow, look at this spread! Is it always this lavish?!" Lanterby gasped, her eyes wide. "Oh no... I feel like I'm going to need to hit the gym after this..."
At the mention of the gym, Soryuin Akemi's eyes lit up, and she slammed a fist on the table. "Yes! The gym is a wonderful place! Sister Lanterby speaks the truth! A healthy body is the foundation of everything!"
Lanterby's mouth twitched. Good heavens, that was the Akemi she knew, alright.
Lucifer and her companions, however, were too preoccupied to eat. The door, flickering all night? Did that mean... a lot of people were coming?
Thinking of this, Aoandon, who had been planning to return to her own world near dawn to handle some affairs, decided it would be wise to postpone her trip once again.
Ren glanced towards the location of the shop's entrance, a hint of anticipation in his eyes. It seemed tonight was going to be very lively indeed.
