Chapter 171 - The Secret History of the Virus — A Desperate Life

Near an ancient castle hidden deep within the mountains of Europe.

"Commander, we've confirmed that all the targets are inside. Should we begin the capture operation immediately?"

Alice was crouched inside a cloaked Quinjet, its stealth system concealing it from sight. She stared intensely at the mansion hidden in the countryside. In her eyes there was nothing but bone-deep hatred.

AliceQuinjet

Her greatest enemy was inside that mansion.

The fact that she had managed to restrain herself from rushing forward already showed incredible self-control. But as time passed and hatred continued to brew, whether Alice could remain this calm was another question entirely.

"Alice, wait a little longer. We still need more intelligence. You'll have your chance for revenge. I promise."

The voice of Phil Coulson came through her earpiece, barely restraining the roaring beast called hatred inside her heart.

Phil Coulson

"Yes, sir," Alice replied calmly.

But her eyes never blinked as they remained fixed on the target.

She hadn't given up. She had simply transformed into a venomous snake lying in wait, lurking silently in the shadows—ready to strike with the most lethal attack at any moment.

No one noticed the snake hidden in the dark except the one who had unleashed it.

Not the owner of the castle.

Nor the visitors within it.

After spending an enormous amount of effort, Albert Wesker had finally found the ancient castle where Oswell E. Spencer lived.

Albert WeskerOswell E. Spencer

When Wesker pushed open the castle doors and entered Spencer's study, he had expected the old man to be surprised by his sudden arrival.

Instead, Spencer merely raised his dull eyes and calmly said:

"You've come…"

Albert Wesker was about to speak, but his words were interrupted by a sudden burst of laughter mixed with coughing.

"You finally came… finally came! My life's work wasn't in vain after all. Umbrella may be gone, but as long as you're still alive, I haven't truly lost."

Umbrella Corporation

If Wesker had previously harbored doubts about this visit and about Spencer himself, those doubts had now only deepened.

At this moment, the only thing he clearly understood was that this seemingly frail old man had been controlling and monitoring all his actions.

Everything he had suspected was closely tied to this man.

Spencer was the source of the anxiety that had haunted him for years—and the answer he had been searching for.

As if reading Wesker's thoughts, Spencer slowly picked up a cup of tea and spoke.

"I know what you're confused about. Since you've already found this place, I'll naturally give you the answer. Sit down. It's a long story."

"Long ago, when I was still a young man, a group of us discovered a mysterious virus from an ancient plant called the Stairway of the Sun. You should know this virus—the prototype of the T-Virus."

T-Virus

"It's a miraculous thing. I'm sure you won't deny that. It can bring endless wealth and terrifying power. But in my eyes, it was something more."

"It was the key to evolution."

"This world is too unfair to humans. Mutants, superhumans… even someone like me, standing at the top of the world, feels envy when I see their abilities."

"Sometimes I would willingly trade everything I possessed for a healthy body that would never age."

"But as a human, that's just fantasy."

"So I thought of another method—evolution. If humanity could take that step forward, perhaps that fantasy could become reality."

"And at that exact moment, the U.S. military presented their Super Soldier Program to me. With official support, the project quickly progressed."

"But as the project continued, I discovered a serious problem."

"I wouldn't live long enough to see the dream realized."

"Umbrella wasn't my personal company. No matter how hard I tried to maintain the research direction, greed always interfered."

"So I abandoned everything I had arranged within Umbrella. I allowed them to do whatever they wanted with the T-Virus."

"And I started a new project."

"I called it… the Wesker Project."

Hearing this, Albert clenched his fists.

He knew the truly important part was coming.

Calming himself, he continued listening.

"Before starting this plan, I thought about something. If I couldn't live to see the moment of human evolution, I couldn't allow my life's work to be wasted."

"Humanity will eventually perish anyway. So why not create a superior race from the current human form?"

"When these new humans replace humanity and rule the world, the man who created them… would become a god."

"And if I could achieve that—even death would not matter."

This was the dream of a madman willing to sacrifice everything.

A dream that had already turned into a terrifying obsession.

Wesker gritted his teeth, his heart sinking to the depths.

"I mobilized enormous manpower to restart a project. The project was named after the chief researcher at the time."

"The Wesker Project."

"In this experiment, we carefully selected hundreds of children born to highly intelligent parents."

"Though these children couldn't inherit their parents' knowledge or personalities, their natural talent already placed them far ahead of ordinary people."

"I used every method possible to turn them into orphans and gathered them under Umbrella's control."

"And then I changed all their surnames… to Wesker."

At that moment, Albert Wesker's eyes widened in fury.

Behind his sunglasses, his eyes turned blood red.

The truth of his origin had been ripped open mercilessly.

But Spencer didn't care about his feelings.

He simply continued speaking, as though delivering his final confession.

"We controlled these children, instilling them with my values and ideology. Then I used Umbrella's connections to place them across the world."

"They lived in carefully arranged environments."

"The children didn't know they were being monitored. From the shadows, I ensured they received the best education available."

"They were seeds. And among those seeds, I was searching for the finest sprout."

"I waited years."

"Eventually, one child displayed extraordinary ability. To awaken his full potential, I arranged an 'accident' and sent him to Umbrella's training facility in Raccoon City."

Raccoon City

"And I gave that Wesker child a name."

"Albert."

"It was the name of my own son who died young."

"That child did not disappoint me. His achievements satisfied me greatly. If other Weskers were similar, I would have enough high-quality individuals to form the foundation of a new human race."

"When Umbrella's research on the T-Virus reached the stage I needed, I moved to the next step."

"I injected a special virus into every Wesker."

"The virus would select the most gifted among them."

"Only the best Wesker would survive—and only he could represent the new humanity I envisioned."

"What about William? Was he part of your plan too?"

Albert asked urgently.

William Birkin

He had willingly injected himself with the virus—but it had been encouraged by his friend William Birkin.

Now Spencer made it sound like the entire event had been orchestrated.

He had to know the truth.

Spencer glanced at him calmly—and with cruel simplicity shattered his last psychological defenses.

"William was originally my spy placed beside Marcus. As for the virus he gave you, I instructed him to do so."

"However, William couldn't control his own ambition. So unfortunately… he had to be discarded."

"So everything in my life happened under your control?"

Albert snarled.

"Even my coming here to find you?"

Hatred erupted within him.

For a proud and arrogant man like Wesker, hearing that his entire life had been directed like a script was unbearable.

The only reason he hadn't killed Spencer yet was because he wanted to hear the end of the story.

Spencer ignored his rage.

Or perhaps he saw it and simply didn't care.

"The development of events dissatisfied me," Spencer continued.

"This Wesker seemed to develop ideas of his own."

"So I activated the backup plan and revealed my existence to him."

"And he did not disappoint me."

"He found this place."

"My life's work has finally borne fruit. For him, I lost everything—fame, status, wealth."

"But for a dying man, none of that matters."

"My dream has been realized."

"And at the end of my life… he stands before me."

"You knew you were going to die?"

Albert stepped forward and leaned close, nearly pressing his face against Spencer's.

"You manipulated my entire life! And now that I finally found you… you tell me you're dying?!"

This was the first time in Albert Wesker's life that he had lost control like this.

Hatred twisted his mind, filling him with the desire to tear the old man apart with his own hands.

"I was always going to die," Spencer replied calmly.

"Whether by your hand… or by S.H.I.E.L.D.… what difference does it make?"

S.H.I.E.L.D.

"I have already fulfilled my dream. Death may even be a release."

"A release?!"

Albert exploded again, grabbing Spencer and choking him violently.

"You destroyed everything I had! And now you want release?!"

Spencer coughed, clearly suffering.

Yet his expression remained calm.

"Kill me," he said quietly.

"I have nothing left. No desires, no regrets."

"As long as you live, my dream will come true."

"Albert… you will become the ruler of the future."

"Remember this."

"I created you."

"In the future you rule…"

"I will be the god."
