"No," Lina said.
She closed her fingers tightly over the warm golden stone. She stood tall, even though her wet clothes were heavy and her body was shaking.
The False Kai's perfect face twitched. For a second, his skin looked like rippling water. "You are blank, Lina," he said. His voice was no longer smooth. It was deep and angry, like rocks grinding together. "You have no name. You have no reflection. You are nothing. You cannot stop me."
"I don't need a name to stop you," Lina said.
The False Kai raised his hand.
High above them, the giant glass faces of the clock tower began to glow. The thick glass rippled like a pond. Dozens of pale, wet hands pushed through the clock faces. The reflections dropped to the stone floor, surrounding the group.
Nia tried to lift her hands, but her blue magic was gone. Reyon just stared at the floor, too empty to fight. Mira and Seren huddled together, crying.
"Take the stone," the False Kai ordered the monsters.
The reflections lunged forward.
Lina squeezed her eyes shut. She held the golden stone up, wishing for help. Wishing for Kai.
Suddenly, the stone grew incredibly hot. It did not burn her skin. Instead, it began to melt.
Lina opened her eyes in shock. The golden stone was turning into liquid light. It dripped down her fingers like warm, glowing honey. It was not just a stone. It was Kai's true name, and it was turning into ink.
Because Lina had no name of her own, the Quill had made her a blank page. And a blank page was the perfect place to write.
The golden ink spread over her hand, covering her arm in bright, glowing lines.
A reflection reached for her face. Lina acted on instinct. She thrust her glowing hand forward and pressed her palm against the monster's chest.
The monster did not shatter into black water.
Instead, the golden ink flowed from Lina's hand into the reflection. The pale, wet monster gasped. Its empty eyes suddenly filled with color. Its terrible smile vanished. For one brief second, it looked like a real, normal student.
Then, the student faded away into soft, clean mist.
Lina stared at her glowing hand. The golden ink was not just a weapon. It was the power to rewrite. It could fix the broken reflections. It could give them peace.
"She has the ink!" the False Kai screamed. His voice was full of pure panic. "Kill her! Do not let her write!"
The remaining reflections rushed at her.
Lina did not run. She stepped forward. She swept her glowing arm through the air. A wave of golden light washed over the monsters. Wherever the light touched, the pale faces turned human for a second, and then faded into clean mist.
She was erasing the mirror's hold. She was rewriting the nightmare.
The False Kai roared. He ran at Lina himself, his hands turning into sharp, clear glass.
Lina turned to face him. She stepped inside his guard and pressed her glowing, golden hand directly against his chest.
The False Kai froze. The golden ink burned into his perfect uniform. His fake smile melted away. His face twisted in agony.
"You are not real," Lina whispered. "And I am rewriting you."
The False Kai let out a terrible, screeching sound. His body dissolved into a puddle of black water, washing over Lina's shoes.
The clock tower was quiet. The remaining reflections were gone.
Lina fell to her knees, gasping for air. The golden ink on her arm slowly faded, sinking back into her skin. She looked at her hand. It was empty, but it felt warm.
"We did it," Mira whispered, crawling over to hug her.
But before Lina could smile, a loud, heavy clanking sound echoed above them.
The giant gears of the clock tower were moving. The massive hands of the clock began to spin backward.
The glowing numbers above their heads flickered in the dark air.
Kai 🪞 — 5
Lina 🖋️ — 5
Mira — 4
Mira's number had dropped. And the clock was not just telling time anymore. It was counting down to the end of the world.
