Chapter 128 - THE THRONE OF VIRELITH

For a while, no one spoke.

The battle had ended.

But the Root Throne Chamber had not yet realized it.

Smoke drifted through the air in thin, twisting ribbons. Broken pieces of the extraction device lay scattered across the stone floor, their edges flashing with weak sparks.

Several roots along the walls had been burned black.

Others were slowly recovering.

Faint green light moved beneath their bark.

At the center of the chamber, the Crimson Heart fragment rested inside its ancient cradle.

Safe.

For now.

Kael stood several steps away, Stormfang hanging loosely from his hand.

The blade had gone quiet.

No crimson storm.

No violent pull beneath his skin.

Only a faint blue current travelled along its edge before disappearing.

Across the chamber, Elaris slowly pulled her hands away from the roots.

The moment she did, her balance shifted.

Kael noticed.

He moved before she could take another step.

His hand caught her arm.

Elaris looked up.

"You pushed too far," Kael said.

She glanced at the roots behind her.

"So did you."

"That isn't an answer."

"It wasn't a question."

A faint smile almost appeared on Kael's face.

Almost.

His eyes moved over her, checking for injuries.

Elaris noticed.

"You can stop looking at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I'm about to fall apart."

Kael's fingers remained around her arm.

"You almost did."

"I didn't."

"You were about to."

"But I wasn't."

Kael stared at her.

Elaris stared back.

Then a small smile finally reached her face.

Kael shook his head.

"You're impossible."

"And yet you keep catching me."

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Kael released her.

A few meters away, Xyren groaned.

"I hate to interrupt whatever that was, but does anyone know if my head is supposed to feel like three different people are arguing inside it?"

AURIXA turned toward him.

"That is not a normal biological sensation."

Xyren stared at her.

"Thank you. I was worried it might be."

He pushed himself away from the damaged console.

Then stopped.

"Actually... why was I connected to that thing?"

AURIXA's expression shifted slightly.

"I do not know."

Xyren stared at her.

"That answer is becoming increasingly unpopular."

Elaris laughed quietly.

The sound felt strangely warm inside the damaged chamber.

Kael looked toward her for a moment.

Then—

THUMP.

The entire chamber shook.

The smile disappeared from Elaris's face.

Everyone turned.

At the far end of the chamber, the Root Throne stood in darkness.

A thin crimson line appeared across its surface.

Then another pulse.

THUMP.

The roots surrounding it began to move.

Xyren immediately stepped backward.

"No."

Kael looked at him.

Xyren pointed toward the throne.

"No. Absolutely not. We are not doing this again."

AURIXA stepped forward.

Her eyes remained fixed on the ancient structure.

"It is active."

Kael turned toward her.

"Why?"

The throne pulsed again.

Stormfang answered.

Blue lightning crawled along the blade.

AURIXA slowly looked from the weapon to Kael.

Then back to the throne.

"It wants you to sit."

Kael stared at the throne.

"That's never a good sentence."

Xyren folded his arms.

"Considering the last time you touched ancient furniture, I support avoiding it."

Elaris gave him a look.

Xyren shrugged.

"I'm just saying. We've established a pattern."

The roots shifted.

They weren't attacking.

They were moving away from the steps.

Making a path.

Kael tightened his grip around Stormfang.

He didn't move.

Elaris stepped closer.

"Kael."

He looked at her.

She glanced toward the throne.

"You don't have to."

Kael looked back at the ancient seat.

Another pulse travelled through the chamber.

THUMP.

Far beyond the walls, something answered.

A deep metallic roar rolled through the city.

Kael exhaled.

"That's usually what they want you to think."

Xyren raised a hand.

"I'd like the record to show that I agree with Elaris."

Kael started walking.

"Unfortunately, the record has been ignored."

"Of course it has."

Elaris followed.

Not ahead.

Not behind.

Beside him.

Kael climbed the steps.

The closer he came, the brighter Stormfang became.

Ancient markings appeared beneath his feet.

Roots curled around the throne.

The dark stone shifted.

For centuries, it had been waiting.

Kael stopped in front of it.

The throne looked less like something built for a ruler...

and more like something built to remember one.

He slowly sat.

For one second—

nothing happened.

Then—

THUMP.

The entire city answered.

Crimson light burst from beneath the throne.

It raced through the chamber.

Into the roots.

Across the walls.

Beyond the sanctuary.

Outside—

a single tower flickered.

Then ignited.

Another followed.

Then another.

Lights spread across Virelith like stars appearing across a dead sky.

Ancient transit lines awakened beneath the streets.

Buried machines began to move.

Medical chambers opened.

Dormant bio-machines stirred behind layers of dust and glass.

Living roots climbed the sides of broken towers.

Deep beneath the city, something massive began turning after centuries of silence.

Virelith was waking.

Kael remained still.

Crimson light crossed his shoulders.

Stormfang rested across his knees.

Ancient roots moved around the throne.

For a moment, he looked as though he belonged there.

Elaris stood below him.

Quietly watching.

The ancient throne.

The living city.

The weapon.

The power.

Everything seemed to be telling her the same thing.

This is where he belongs.

She looked up at him.

"So this is where you're supposed to be?"

Kael looked at the throne.

Then at the city.

Then back at her.

"No."

Elaris blinked.

"No?"

Kael extended his hand.

"Here."

Her eyes dropped to his hand.

Then returned to his face.

For a few seconds, she didn't move.

There was something almost uncertain in her expression.

As if she were asking without words—

Really? Even now? After everything this throne just showed you?

Kael's hand remained extended.

"Come here."

Elaris looked at the enormous throne.

"Kael, that's your throne."

"I know."

"Then why are you asking me to sit on it?"

Kael looked at the empty space beside him.

Then at her.

"Because I don't want to be here without you."

The words were quiet.

No grand declaration.

No ancient prophecy.

Just Kael.

Elaris's expression softened.

She slowly placed her hand in his.

Kael's fingers closed around hers.

He pulled her gently up the steps.

The moment she reached the throne, the roots moved.

They curled away from the empty space beside him.

The ancient stone shifted.

The seat widened.

Making room.

Elaris looked down.

Then at Kael.

"You planned that?"

"No."

"Of course."

She sat beside him.

Not below him.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

Kael turned toward her.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Dust still marked her cheek from the battle.

His hand rose.

His thumb gently brushed it away.

Elaris's breath caught.

Kael looked into her eyes.

"Whatever this place thinks I am..."

His voice lowered.

"Don't let it make me forget who matters."

Her eyes softened completely.

"You'd better remember that."

A faint smile appeared on Kael's lips.

"I usually learn after you threaten me."

"That wasn't a threat."

"Then I should probably be worried."

Elaris shook her head.

"You're impossible."

"And you're still here."

She smiled.

"Unfortunately."

Kael's eyebrow lifted.

"Unfortunately?"

"Maybe."

He leaned slightly closer.

The noise of the awakening city seemed to fade around them.

For a heartbeat, neither moved.

Then Elaris closed the distance.

Her lips met his.

Soft.

Brief.

Nothing dramatic.

Just enough to make everything around them feel still.

When she pulled away, Kael looked at her for a moment.

Almost surprised.

Elaris's smile returned.

"That wasn't a threat."

Kael's mouth curved slightly.

"No?"

"No."

A small pause.

"That was a reminder."

Kael quietly laughed.

Then—

"Beautiful."

Both of them looked down.

Xyren stood below the throne with his arms folded.

Elaris closed her eyes.

"Xyren..."

He nodded solemnly.

"Ancient civilization restored."

Kael said nothing.

"Emotional declaration on the throne."

Kael slowly closed his eyes.

Xyren continued.

"Romantic moment."

A beat.

"Emotional damage immediately follows."

Elaris gave him a look sharp enough to cut stone.

Xyren raised both hands.

"What? I'm happy for you."

He looked at Kael.

"Terrified, but happy."

Kael stared at him.

"You can leave."

Xyren looked around the enormous chamber.

"Right. I'll just walk outside and find another ancient kingdom."

AURIXA spoke without looking away from the city.

"There are currently no additional kingdoms available within walking distance."

Xyren slowly turned toward her.

"Why would you help him?"

"I did not."

Elaris laughed.

This time, Kael smiled too.

For a few seconds, the ancient throne didn't feel ancient.

It felt like theirs.

AURIXA had moved toward the edge of the chamber.

She wasn't looking at Kael anymore.

She was looking outside.

Virelith continued to awaken.

Lights moved through the streets.

One tower after another came alive.

The glow reflected in AURIXA's eyes.

Kael noticed.

"AURIXA."

She turned.

Kael gestured toward the city.

"Go."

She frowned slightly.

"Where?"

"It has been waiting for you too."

AURIXA stared at him.

Then slowly turned back toward Virelith.

She walked to the nearest living wall.

Her fingers touched the roots.

The response was immediate.

Light spread beneath her hand.

Across the wall.

Through the roots.

Into the streets.

Across the towers.

The city answered her.

AURIXA's lips curved into a small smile.

"Welcome back, Virelith."

Far away—

a tower answered.

A beam of light rose into the sky.

Blue.

Crimson.

Gold.

Xyren looked upward.

For once, he didn't make a joke.

"That's actually beautiful."

Kael glanced at him.

Xyren frowned.

"Don't get used to it."

Elaris smiled.

Bloomfall stood several steps away.

She watched the city in silence.

She didn't approach Kael.

Didn't pretend the past had disappeared.

Kael looked at her once.

Their eyes met.

He gave her a small nod.

Bloomfall returned it.

Nothing more was needed.

Not yet.

The distance remained.

But so did the understanding.

They eventually stepped outside the chamber.

Virelith no longer looked completely dead.

It was damaged.

Broken.

Entire districts were still buried beneath stone.

Some towers remained dark.

But beneath the ruins, something had changed.

The city was breathing.

Blue lines moved beneath the streets.

Ancient transit systems glowed underground.

Medical facilities opened one by one.

Bio-machines stirred inside forgotten chambers.

Roots climbed the ruins and wrapped around towers like living veins.

Kael stood beside Elaris.

Their hands remained joined.

Xyren stood nearby.

AURIXA looked over the city she had once known.

For the first time in centuries—

Virelith was alive.

They hadn't simply found a lost kingdom.

They had brought it back.

Far away—

something went dark.

The place was nothing like Virelith.

No roots.

No stone.

No ancient carvings.

Black glass stretched into darkness.

Thin lines of white light moved beneath the floor.

Holographic structures floated through the air.

Cities.

Stars.

Networks.

Thousands of streams of information moved simultaneously.

At the center of the chamber, a massive display suddenly changed.

VIRELITH NETWORK: ACTIVE

A figure standing before it stopped.

Another line appeared.

CONNECTION LOST

Silence.

The holographic structures flickered.

Then one of them fractured.

The figure slowly turned.

A new image appeared.

Virelith.

Its towers glowing again.

Its ancient network alive.

Then—

Kael.

Stormfang in his hand.

The Crimson Heart.

The figure's hand slowly closed.

"Impossible."

The hologram changed.

Kael sitting upon the Root Throne.

Elaris beside him.

The figure stared.

"They awakened it."

A long silence followed.

Then the fractured hologram shattered.

"Find them."

The chamber lights went completely black.

Somewhere in the darkness—

a machine awakened.

Then another.

Something enormous moved behind the glass.

And far beyond the chamber, an entire network began searching.
