"Let's just take the winch," Blackfish suggested, as they would need to conserve their strength for a big fight once they reached The Eyrie.
The Eyrie lowered its basket, and so they took turns on the winch, arriving at The Eyrie like supplies.
By this time, the sun had risen high.
A man with silver hair, a strong build, wearing a sky-blue cloak and a crescent falcon breastplate, helped Ser Brynden out of the basket.
He was Ser Vardis Egen, Captain of the Guard for Jon Arryn, and besides him, there were several other guards in blue robes.
"Ser, you've brought quite a few people," Ser Vardis's smiling face suddenly became strange as the baskets slowly filled.
Besides Blackfish Brynden and Baron Nestor, the remaining few—Bronze Yohn, Barristan the Bold, black-haired Gendry, and red-haired Anguy—all jumped out of the basket and began to appear before him.
Vardis finally realized something was amiss.
"What do you mean by this?" Vardis asked.
He had also spent a long time in King's Landing, and naturally recognized a few of them, especially since these men were already armed and armored.
"Nothing, everyone wants to see Lysa."
"No," Vardis's words grew cold.
"The others are not Lady Lysa's guests.
Ser Barristan is a traitor to the Iron Throne, and Lord Yohn is a traitor to The Vale.
If the Iron Throne were to know of this, the consequences would be severe."
"Oh, I am also a traitor to the Iron Throne.
What power does the Iron Throne have to claim me? They are but a group of traitors." Gendry stood before the blue robes, his handsome and masculine face, black hair and blue eyes.
"It's you, ambitious Gendry.
I should have known the Kingsguard wouldn't come alone.
My mistake for not recognizing that young king's face."
"I am not the traitor, Lord.
Lysa is the traitor, the one who poisoned Lord Arryn.
You should announce us.
I wish to see the Duke's regent mother."
"You lie," Captain Vardis said, disbelieving.
The blue robes gasped; the spreading shadow had become reality.
"It's true," Blackfish nodded.
"No one would lie about treason.
Jon was healthy before, yet he died mysteriously."
"You are the Lady's uncle," Vardis said, frowning.
"Not anymore.
Lysa has been expelled from House Tully by my brother."
"I, in my name," Gendry looked at Vardis, "the rightful heir to the Iron Throne."
"Then leave now.
You are, barely, barely, our guests," Vardis said, his face ashen.
Five people, and three old men, there was still a possibility of control.
"Let the gods in heaven see who among you lies.
If you lie, you will be thrown from The Eyrie."
Everyone walked from the winch room up the spiral staircase.
The Eyrie was not large, just seven white spires clustered together like arrows in a quiver, perched on the mountaintop.
Though it had no stables, smithies, or kennels, its granaries were as large as Winterfell's, and its towers could accommodate five hundred men.
However, as Gendry walked through it, he found the castle unusually desolate, with echoes resounding through the empty halls of white stone.
High as glory, high as solitude.
"The Lady is on the balcony," Vardis said, his expression grim.
"You are the first claimants to the throne to arrive, though Lady Lysa will not be pleased."
Lysa's residence was above a small, circular garden, surrounded by white towers.
Blue flowers grew in the soil and grass of the garden.
weirwood trees could not grow here, so successive Dukes had planted lawns and placed statues among the flourishing flower bushes.
Lysa had just finished bathing and changed into a cream-colored velvet cloak, wearing a string of jade and moonstones around her milky-white neck.
She was now presiding over a gathering on the open-air balcony.
Lysa was surrounded by squire, knights, and various Lords, most of whom still harbored hopes of marrying her, sleeping with her, and then ruling The Vale of Arryn alongside her.
"What exactly do you want, Uncle?" Seeing Brynden and the people beside him, Lysa's face immediately fell.
"To bring them here without permission, without even a greeting, dragging us into their disputes with the Lannisters, Robert's Bastard, traitors of the Kingsguard…"
