Chapter 91: Emerald Lightning
[Tokyo - Shie Hassaikai Compound - Underground Ruin]
The silence lasted for only a heartbeat.
The monolithic arm of stone and flesh that Aokiji had frozen mid-air did not shatter. Instead, a guttural, wet growl resonated from deep within the monstrosity that was Overhaul. The fused muscle fibers underneath the ice violently expanded, pulsing with grotesque power.
CRACK-CRRR-ROCK!
With a roar that shook the very foundations of the underground compound, Overhaul flexed. The beautiful, diamond-hard glacial casing exploded outward, turning into a deadly hail of ice shrapnel that cut through the freezing mist. Overhaul towered even higher, his fused form bulking up, his golden eyes burning with clinical fury at the intrusion.
Aokiji did not even blink as the ice rained around him. His gaze remained locked on the broken form of Midoriya in the dirt.
"Heroes don't break for a crying girl, Midoriya," Aokiji's voice drawled, flat and icy, yet carrying a sudden, ferocious undercurrent. He pulled his right hand from his pocket, the freezing mist instantly condensing into his signature, super-compressed ice blade.
Aokiji narrowed his eyes, shifting his stance. "They rise against everything for her!"
Whoosh.
Aokiji evaporated.
He did not run; he became a ghost of the cold. Utilizing the absolute frictionlessness of his Fukuoka training, he glided across the rubble at supersonic speeds. Overhaul, still shaking off the residual frost, roared and swung a massive, mutated fist. Aokiji drifted under the swing, the wind pressure flaring his trench coat.
He materialized directly beside Overhaul's mutated flank. With a fluid, surgical strike, Aokiji drove his compressed ice blade through a massive mass of fused muscle.
Shlk.
The compressed ice blade sheared through flesh and bone, severing one of the monstrosity's upper appendages. The heavy, mutated limb crashed to the floor.
But Aokiji didn't pause to admire the strike. Overhaul chuckled, a distorted, bubbling sound. Instantaneously, the raw, severed flesh at the stump of his arm reconfigured. Muscle, bone, and stone re-assembled in a blinding flash of red light. The arm grew back entirely within a second.
Regeneration, Aokiji calculated, analyzing the biological rewrite. Surgical strikes are useless. He simply reforms.
Aokiji evaporated again, dodging a secondary swipe. He analyzed the battlefield geography. He was fighting on two fronts. Midoriya was broken and bleeding behind him. But Eri was standing in the open breach of the wall, currently behind Overhaul's towering mass. If Overhaul unleashed another area-of-effect attack, the girl would be erased.
Aokiji needed a tactical shift. He had to cross the monster's line of sight and secure the hostage, pulling her back to where Midoriya lay so he could defend them together. He needed to buy a critical microsecond.
Aokiji materialized twenty feet away from Overhaul. He planted his boots into the rubble. He did not condense a small blade. He raised his hands, focusing the absolute zero deep within his core.
Ice Style: Glacial Lance Storm.
Instead of a single glacier, Aokiji fired a rapid-fire barrage of twelve separate, fifteen-foot lances of dense, jagged ice. They tore through the air like armor-piercing artillery. Aokiji wasn't aiming to freeze the monster; he was creating a kinetic storm.
THWACK-CRASH-THUD!
The ice lances hammered into Overhaul's chest, the immense kinetic force of the impacts driving the monstrosity backward, skidding across the broken floor, away from the breach in the wall.
Overhaul roared, raising his arms to block the relentless bombardment.
That was the opening Aokiji needed.
While the smoke of pulverized ice obscured the view, Aokiji glided across the battlefield at peak velocity. He didn't look at the staggered monster. He bolted directly for the breach.
He found the little girl.
Eri was still on her knees, her face buried in her small, bandaged hands, weeping with the conviction that her surrender was the only cure. She heard Aokiji's words. She heard him say 'rise against everything for her'. She looked up, her tear-stained face gazing out at the Ice Prince who was currently braving hell to reach her. She saw Midoriya, his face still in the dirt, still trying to drag his shattered body forward with his teeth.
The sight of their refusal to give up, despite her surrender, broke the chains of absolute despair in her heart. She didn't want to go back. She wanted to live.
The spark of hope ignited a miracle. The small, singular horn on the right side of Eri's forehead began to emit a blinding, warm, and comforting white light.
Aokiji arrived. He scooped the frail child up into his left arm.
The moment Aokiji made contact with her, the world seemed to ripple. He felt it. Every cell, every quirk channel in Aokiji's body that had been scarred and dormant since his fight with All For One in Kamino suddenly throbbed with a strange, violent pulse of memory. It was not healing; it was a devastating rewind of his biological time. A phantom pain, agonizing and profound, surged through his system as his cells tried to re-experience the trauma of that battle, only to be forcibly pulled back.
Her quirk... it's a regression factor, Aokiji realized, his eyes widening as he felt his own internal time begin to spiral.
Before Aokiji could react to the internal turmoil, the ground beneath them shifted violently.
Overhaul had identified the maneuver. The monster roared, ignoring the ice lances and launching his monstrous, concrete-fused right fist directly at Aokiji and the hostage in his arms.
The strike was too fast to dodge. Overhaul's massive fist loomed over them.
Aokiji acted purely on instinct. He knew he was about to be obliterated. He couldn't let her take the impact.
With a final, desperate burst of strength, Aokiji violently hurled Eri into the air, throwing her backward across the room, directly toward the broken form of Midoriya.
Midoriya, still biting the dirt, looked up. He saw the white light of the girl flying toward him.
The miracle was already working. The aura radiating from Eri hit Midoriya first. In a fraction of a second, the complex, shattered glass fractures of his arms and legs began to violently fuse back together.
Midoriya let out a guttural roar, refusing to let her fall. Despite the severe internal bleeding and agonizing pain, Midoriya forced his legs to function. He kicked off the ground with a sound of thunder, emerald lightning sparking erratically around him as he leaped into the air, catching Eri in his freshly healed arms.
Behind them, Overhaul's massive fist connected.
Aokiji didn't even have time to build a shield.
WHAM.
Overhaul's monstrous blow hit Aokiji with unmitigated, crushing force.
The impact was so powerful it sent Aokiji flying backward across the underground chamber like a broken doll. He slammed into the reinforced concrete wall of the far corner with a sickening crash, the structure collapsing inward. A monumental cloud of thick, choking concrete dust exploded outward, burying the Ice Prince in the rubble.
[The Reset]
The massive dust cloud generated by Aokiji's impact dominated the far side of the room. Overhaul slowly turned his towering, fused gaze back toward Midoriya, expecting to see two broken victims.
The view shook the golden eyes of the plague mask.
Midoriya was standing. He was متعافياً تماماً. The Rewind quirk had brought his body back to peak physical condition in less than three seconds.
Midoriya didn't say a word. He stood with Mirio's torn, crimson hero cape tied tightly across his back, securing Eri to him. Midoriya's face, which had been pressed against the dirt, was now clean, save for the tear tracks that had dried into war paint.
But it was his eyes. The wide, hopeful gaze was entirely gone. His green pupils were constricted, glowing with a dangerous, unstable emerald light, focused on Overhaul with an intense, calculated promise of absolute annihilation. The sheer voltage of One For All radiating from his balanced body was so potent the concrete around his boots was dissolving into atomic dust.
"You...," Overhaul growled, a flicker of genuine apprehension in his monstrous voice. "That is my material."
On the other side of the room, the dust began to clear.
Aokiji slowly emerged from the rubble of the collapsed wall. He was breathing heavily, coughing up a spray of ice-tinted blood. He wiped his chin with the back of his hand, his eyes locking onto the monster.
But something was wrong.
Aokiji stood up straight. He didn't slouch. He took his hands out of his pockets.
As he stood, a terrifying, silent change took over. The air temperature in the entire ruin instantly hit absolute zero. A thick, roaring, otherworldly aura of pale, shimmering blue light erupted around Aokiji's entire body. The energy was unstable, screaming with subzero intensity.
His dark pupils constricted, then erupted with a bright, intense, pale blue light. His black hair, catching the freezing energy, began to whip and vibrate violently as if caught in a theoretical wind tunnel, standing up slightly. He felt "that feeling" again. The feeling from Kamino. The feeling of absolute, unmitigated power that had been dormant for months, suddenly awakened by the strange throb of Eri's touch.
Aokiji let out a slow, frosty breath, the vapor catching the light of his own blue aura.
"This feeling...," Aokiji murmured, his voice sounding entirely different, carrying the vibrating resonance of an ancient glacier. He clenched his right fist, feeling the smooth, effortless rush of an apocalypse waiting to be released.
The monstrous, GREEN aura around Midoriya exploded, completely engulfing the boy. The raw, emerald lightning turned jagged and volatile, screaming at the air as Midoriya unlocked the full potential of his power. He did not break. Eri was rewinding him faster than the energy could destroy him. Midoriya stared at Overhaul, his body vibrating with One For All: 100%.
Midoriya didn't look at Aokiji. His voice, hardened by the death of Nighteye, cut through the subzero cold of the room.
"Kuzan-kun...," Midoriya drawled, the emerald lightning flaring brightly. "Could you... leave this one to me, please?"
Aokiji, surrounded by his own terrifying, shimmering blue aura, his eyes glowing with ethereal zero, looked at the green-haired boy who was about to defy physics.
Aokiji stood there for a heartbeat, analyzing the raw, unstable voltage radiating from Midoriya. A ghost of a smile, genuine and thrilled, touched the corners of his mouth. The pale blue aura instantly vanished, and his eyes returned to their normal, dark black. The Ice Prince relaxed his shoulders, the tension leaving his frame.
"Well," Aokiji drawled lazily, his usual nonchalance returning, though his eyes remained sharp. "If you ask like that... I suppose I can sit this dance out."
Aokiji leaned against a broken pillar, resting his chin on his hand. "Then, Midoriya... let me finally see what your real limits are."
The emerald lightning around Midoriya became a blinding, violent nova. He didn't say a word. He just launched himself.
