The exact second Snorlax materialized on the field, a collective wave of relief washed over the global audience.
While it was true that Ash had brought a relatively unevolved 'baby team' to this conference, he had still invested major heavy-hitters into this specific lineup! Snorlax and Charizard were backed by Pikachu—even if Pikachu chose to completely clock out early today…
There are no 'what-ifs' in live combat; the match pressed onward. Upon taking the field, Snorlax immediately sank into a profound, motionless state of slumber.
This wasn't because Harrison's Hypno managed to clip it with a psychic status move—Snorlax simply hadn't actively woken up yet!
Its metabolic consumption from yesterday's grueling war of attrition against Gary's party was simply too immense. Snorlax had expended almost the entirety of its stored calorie reserves and physical stamina to secure those knockouts, leaving its baseline recovery heavily bottlenecked by morning.
Seeing his titan instantly doze off, Ash's facial expression twisted into a grimace. But within a fraction of a second, his unorthodox logic snapped into place.
"Wait, if Snorlax is already asleep from the very beginning, doesn't that make the opponent's Hypnosis completely useless?! This is the ultimate, perfect defense!"
To systematically immunize myself to your sleep-induction moves, I will actively choose to enter the battlefield pre-asleep… What kind of bizarre, rule-bending defensive theory is this?
Across the field, Harrison let out an awkward, strained laugh before issuing his next command.
"Hypno, use Dream Eater!"
A massive wave of eerie, violet psychic energy surged forward, completely enveloping Snorlax's massive frame.
The entire mechanical purpose of using Hypnosis on a target is to induce sleep so that Dream Eater can subsequently siphon their lifeforce.
Now that Snorlax had actively provided the sleep condition on a silver platter… wasn't Harrison free to systematically drain its health pool without any setup?
"What do you mean by 'perfect defense'?! Ash, you idiot, think of an actual strategy immediately!!"
Watching from the trainer's box, Misty couldn't help but scream out in sheer frustration. A wave of panic finally surfaced on Ash's face as well.
She was telling him to figure something out… but what could he possibly do? Waking up a deep-sleeping Snorlax via raw vocal commands is practically a theological impossibility!
"Snorlax!!!"
However, before Ash could even attempt a desperate command, Snorlax abruptly snapped upright. Except… its facial expression looked horrifyingly wrong!
Snorlax's traditionally placid, gentle face was twisted into an incredibly dark, venomous scowl! The sheer aura radiating from its body was enough to send shivers down the spine of anyone watching!
This is the ultimate manifestation of… waking up on the wrong side of the bed with pure, unadulterated rage!
Mechanically, Dream Eater is a direct, invasive assault on the target's subconscious mind, forcing the victim to endure horrific nightmares while siphoning their stamina.
Snorlax had been peacefully dreaming about a massive, infinite banquet when suddenly, an invisible force violently snatched away every single Berry in its hands! Every single fruit tree in its paradise was systematically shattered to splinters!
Snorlax didn't just wake up from a nightmare—it woke up to find its ultimate life purpose violently desecrated! It currently possessed a catastrophic amount of morning rage!
Hypno's eyes twitched violently as the paw holding its hypnotic pendulum began to visibly tremble. The raw, oppressive pressure radiating from this Snorlax… was terrifyingly high!
"Incredible, Snorlax! Blast him point-blank with Hyper Beam!"
"Snorlax!!"
A blinding, golden column of pure destructive energy erupted from its maw in the blink of an eye! The absolute force of the Hyper Beam completely swallowed Hypno whole. When the dust settled, a thoroughly scorched, unconscious Hypno was left spiraling on the ground, completely stripped of its ability to battle!
The furious God of War Snorlax had cleanly one-shot the exact psychic threat that had just given Ash an operational headache!
This is the ultimate, fated consequence of disrupting a deep-sleep lover's rest! Let alone a Hypno—if Harrison had brought out his Blaziken at this exact moment, this furious Snorlax might have genuinely flattened it within three frames! If only Ash's luck could hold out that long.
[Lance: The God of War Snorlax continues to operate at its standard, terrifying efficiency tier! I don't know what options Ash has left in reserve, but given Snorlax's current momentum, it should comfortably be able to trade out at least one more of Harrison's assets… How on earth does he manage to lose this set?]
Snorlax's current health pool had only sustained a single, partial siphoning from Dream Eater, leaving its physical endurance hovering at roughly eighty percent.
Even factoring in the residual fatigue from yesterday's match, it sat securely at seventy percent capacity! A Snorlax operating at this tier is mathematically guaranteed to secure a positive trade. It is a locked-in 1-for-1 at the absolute minimum.
Under these explicit parameters, Ash was sitting on a comfortable three-versus-two numbers advantage, with a fully rested Charizard waiting in the wings…
How could a layout this heavily favored result in a total defeat? Is Harrison's Blaziken simply that mathematically broken, or is Charizard's internal exhaustion far worse than Red predicted? Or perhaps Ash's remaining unevolved party members completely drop the ball?
[Shauntal: I don't care about the final bracket math, the God of War Snorlax is absolute perfection! Even if the timeline dictates a loss, it still dragged the opponent through hell! I am officially a die-hard Snorlax fan from this day forward!]
[Norman: Haha, this Snorlax truly executes its role flawlessly. It makes me seriously consider capturing and training a Snorlax for my own gym rotation.]
[Cynthia: Frankly… a Snorlax of this specific caliber could easily be integrated into my personal high-tier tactical systems.]
While this archival set is technically classified under Charizard's bond logs, the sheer performance metrics displayed by Snorlax have earned it an immense wave of global appreciation.
But this is nothing less than what the titan deserves; after all, it stands firmly as the undisputed number-two anchor in Ash's early career! Combined with its naturally gentle appearance and utterly reliable bulk, who could possibly dislike it?
In the Footage—The Heavyweight Intermission
Because Harrison had lost three of his core party members, the tournament rules dictated a formal five-minute strategic intermission. The break passed in a flash, and as both competitors re-entered the arena boxes, Harrison took the initiative by deploying his fourth selection.
Harrison's fourth choice was a massive, metallic Steelix! Conversely, Ash refrained from maintaining his heavyweight advantage with Snorlax, opting instead to field his fourth rotation asset—his Shiny Noctowl!
While it's true that this specific Noctowl possessed advanced Extrasensory capabilities and leaned heavily into Psychic-type skill distributions, its opponent was a colossal, high-defense Steel-type titan!
Attempting to lift or manipulate an entity of Steelix's mass via raw telekinetic output demands a catastrophic amount of physical stamina! At this specific juncture, the logical counterplay was either to deploy Charizard for an immediate, high-damage melt or to match its bulk with Snorlax.
Why on earth would you send a lightweight owl into this matchup?
Predictably, the engagement went south. Against Noctowl's psychic skill output, Steelix treated the pressure as nothing more than a mild itch. It immediately whipped up a violent Sandstorm, completely obscuring Noctowl's visual tracking and forcing the flyer to slowly lower its altitude.
Seizing the window, Steelix used Dig to vanish beneath the earth before erupting upward, launching Noctowl violently into the air!
Ash attempted to salvage the exchange by commanding a desperate Hypnosis, but Harrison's Steelix reacted with blinding speed, swinging a massive, hardened Iron Tail that smashed Noctowl cleanly out of the sky!
An absolute, zero-value trade! Noctowl was recalled by a frustrated Ash, who immediately sent the God of War Snorlax back onto the battlefield! Heavyweight versus heavyweight—this was the correct matchup! The devastating kinetic output of Snorlax's prior Hyper Beam was still freshly burned into the audience's minds!
To systematically prevent Snorlax from safely charging another Hyper Beam, Harrison immediately commanded Steelix to initiate a Bind attack! The massive steel serpent coiled tightly around Snorlax's torso, pinioning its limbs before unleashing a sequential barrage of Iron Tails!
Faced with this crushing hold, Ash instructed Snorlax to retaliate using Ice Punch! Straining against the constricting metallic coils, Snorlax forced one of its massive arms free, a freezing, sub-zero aura condensing around its fist! It immediately drove a brutal, shattering uppercut straight into Steelix's jaw!
Against a Ground/Steel-type entity like Steelix, an Ice-type punch delivered a clean, super-effective hit. The sheer, freezing temperature paired with the raw physical impact forces Steelix to violently loosen its constriction.
"Don't give it space! Knock it back with Mega Punch!"
"Snorlax!"
Facing the giant serpent that had just released its grip, Snorlax showed absolutely zero mercy. A blinding white kinetic aura condensed around its heavy fist once more before it drove the blow straight into Steelix's torso, sending the massive steel dragon crashing backward across the field!
"Finish it right there with Hyper Beam!"
dishonesty "Snorlax!"
A brilliant, golden column of pure destructive energy erupted forward, completely engulfing the collapsed Steelix! A massive explosion tore through the arena, kicking up a thick wall of smoke.
By the time Harrison could lower his arm from the rushing debris, Steelix was shown slumped on the earth with swirling eyes, completely incapacitated.
Despite possessing a natural Steel-type resistance that slashes Normal-type moves by half, Steelix was completely dismantled by a combination of two physical punches and a single Hyper Beam…
The sheer offensive ceiling of this Snorlax was something that can never be underestimated! And that Hyper Beam… possessed a destructive yield vastly superior to standard operational models!
Harrison recalled his defeated Steelix and pulled out his fifth Poké Ball, deploying Houndoom! This happened to be a prominent species native to the Johto region, and it clearly served as one of Harrison's core party anchors!
Faced with Houndoom's entry, Ash didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second, immediately commanding Snorlax to unleash another Hyper Beam!
Who could have possibly predicted that Harrison's Houndoom was actively prepping Counter! It absorbed the titanic impact of the Hyper Beam and reflected the exact kinetic yield back with double the operational force! Under the weight of a doubled Hyper Beam, Snorlax's legendary endurance finally hit its mathematical limit, and the titan fell, completely out of commission!!
[Shauntal: !!!! No! My Snorlax!!]
[Marshal: Hold on a minute, Harrison… that Houndoom of yours is straight-up breaking the established laws of physics! How on earth can a Dark/Fire-type use Counter to reflect a special energy projectile like Hyper Beam?]
[Caitlin: From a strict mechanical standpoint, Counter is exclusively coded to reflect physical-contact moves. Siphoning and rebounding a high-yield special attack like Hyper Beam requires Mirror Coat… Can a Houndoom naturally manifest Mirror Coat?]
[Ash: Uh… is it possible that in that exact split second, Houndoom's perception registered the Hyper Beam as a physical mass of energy, allowing its Counter to treat it as a contact move and throw it back…"]
No, even I can't find a logical way to justify this script! Isn't this opponent straight-up using a cheat code?!
Ash had spent his entire early career utilizing completely unexpected, rule-bending maneuvers to catch opponents off guard—he never anticipated that a day would come where he would be systematically dismantled by someone else using a completely illegal tactic!
[Red: Using Counter to rebound a Hyper Beam… There is no shame in losing to a literal glitch. Ash fought well.]
What counterplay can a trainer even execute against a literal script exploit? The opponent is straight-up using a game-breaking modification!
[Harrison: Ah… to be perfectly honest, I don't entirely comprehend how Houndoom managed that specific interaction myself. But whenever my Houndoom activates Counter, it possesses a unique property that allows it to disregard the standard distinction between physical and special categories, reflecting the incoming mass regardless. I suppose you could call it a unique, anomalous talent specific to my partner.]
Indeed, this explanation bridged the gap of reality—much like Ash's anomalously agile Snorlax, some Pokémon simply possess an innate, unteachable talent that defies standard rulebooks.
[Karen: Well said. Securing a Houndoom with an anomalous trait of that tier is a testament to your personal fortune, Harrison. I am simply curious… what asset does Ash have left to deal with this specific threat?]
Author's Commentary
Note 1: This specific match against Harrison remains one of the most blatant script-driven losses in early anime history. Pikachu hits a Kecleon and immediately gets written out of the script by a single Sneasel move without displaying an ounce of its true baseline strength. Then you have a Houndoom using Counter on a Hyper Beam to take down Snorlax, and a Steelix using Dig to hit a flying Noctowl… While Dig hitting a flying type can technically be rationalized if the flyer is forced down by a Sandstorm, that final sequence remains an absolute insult to standard battle logic. Charizard is shown flying through the air, yet it doesn't utilize a single Flying-type move throughout the climax, choosing instead to engage in a pure slugfest against an over-tuned Hoenn-region Blaziken! You literally never see a Blaziken behave like that in the original Gold/Silver generation games!
Note 2: Based on Charizard's verified tier of strength, it is theoretically impossible for it to lose a straight 1v1 against a fresh Blaziken. A Charizard that practically shrugged off a full-tier Blastoise's Hydro Pump before executing a maximum-altitude Seismic Toss has zero business losing to a fragile Fire-type starter. There is no logical reason why a glass-cannon Blaziken should comfortably tank a direct Flamethrower, let alone survive the massive kinetic shockwaves of a Dragon Rage… It leaves viewers thoroughly numb. Consequently, the only rational way to balance this outcome within the narrative is to establish Red's theory: Charizard's internal stamina reserves were so thoroughly depleted from yesterday's fated clash against Gary's Blastoise that it entered the arena running on pure fumes.
